Reacher: Burial (2023)
This episode has some major flaws
Reacher season 2 has been on the whole a decent outing, with a wider cast that works well alongside Reacher himself. But this episode has huge logic problems. At the funeral - nobody dies? Not even someone else in the funeral? Then, when the shooters failed to kill, obviously Langston would have known. Reacher would have known that Langston was aware of the failed attempt. Why then would Reacher send the failed shooter to collect his money, when he was in fact unsuccessful? And talking to the failed shooter while standing in almost plain sight of the villains' rendezvous point? Surely Langston would have had surveillance around the building! At this point I was stunned at how badly the script had been thought through in this episode.
Tour de France: Unchained (2023)
An astonishing inside view of an iconic race
Netflix has done to the Tour de France what they did to Formula One racing. This show shows what it's like to be on the ground with some of the best bike racers in the world. Focussing on the best teams in the race, this series shows the rivalry, the challenges, and the victories achieved by both individuals and teams as they go through the gruelling stages of the race. Beautifully shot, this series shows just how epic and beautiful this race is, and that's saying a lot coming from someone who doesn't even own a road bike! (To be honest, I'm an avid mountain biker so it's certainly a related sport). I would 100% watch another season of this show.
Spirited (2022)
Much gags, many film, very minutes
Entertaining. Clever. Lots of throwaway one liners means repeat views will still get laughs. The musical is self effacing, and pokes fun at toxic social media, the pandemic, and the polarization that's come to define our society. Into that mix Reynolds and Ferrell build an ADHD-fuelled ramble with an enormous cast, more scenes than you'd expect, and somehow manage to tie the whole thing up with a bow by the end. I mean, it's not like they didn't have time. It's over two hours long lol! We enjoyed every minute of it, though we're not big fans of musicals. We are Canadians so there's that 😉. This may not garner critical acclaim but it's the craziest Christmas musical you've ever seen, and it was a ton of fun.
I Still See You (2018)
Unique in the paranormal genre
I find it harder to criticize the plot or script for the movie, other than the lab explosion which sets the stage.
The script, actors and sets for the movie were perfect: worn down midwestern town a decade removed from a surreal disaster. What makes "I Still See You" unusual are the "remnants": the ghosts of those who died in the event. The characters have become inured to them and they've already become local lore. It's not explained why the remnants exist, but it forms part of the mystique of the movie. I found the movie to be more paced than panicky, as the movie takes its time to reveal the events of the past. Thorne carries her character perfectly, as do all the others. Underrated movie.
Koursk: Un sous-marin en eaux troubles (2004)
Painstaking ...fiction
Once the movie got to the part where US subs are supposed to have sunk the Kursk, I was astounded. Really? I did a wee bit of looking into it and it wasn't long before I found articles laughing this movie into the trash bin. Waste your time watching something else, lol
The Good Place: Whenever You're Ready (2020)
Ethics, humour and nihilism to wrap it up
What's the best part of making it to the afterlife?
Ending your existence!
That's the message behind the final episodes of the Good Place. Even the afterlife is meaningless! Good job, writers. Will the DVD set come with a gun you can point at your head?
As someone who has studied a lot of ethics and theology, Schur's final episodes demonstrate that even a show about morality and ethics draws a total blank about:
a) how we got here, and the inherent meaning of the universe
b) that the value of life doesn't come about by ENDING IT. Really?
c) the ultimate source of morality. From whence does morality ultimately come?
Schur's final message to us is, there is no ultimate or transcendent meaning to life. So if you can't find that meaning, just pull the trigger. A totally disappointing and hollow ending to an entertaining series.
Hyperdrive (2019)
HotWheels meets real life
Take some drift cars and put them on a terrifying track with interesting and entertaining drivers from all over the world, then give them obstacles that endanger car and driver - and do it at night. That's Hyperdrive in a nutshell: the most insane car show to ever hit the small screen. The tracks and challenges were punishing and jaw-dropping and this has got to be one of the most entertaining reality shows any network has ever done. Good job, Netflix, and kudos to Charlize Theron for expertly producing the show. Absolutely loved how eliminated drivers could come back in the wild card challenge - I did not see that coming and that was BRILLIANT. Can't wait for series 2!
