Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Its a Spike Lee Joint, for better or worse...
This is a pretty good war drama film. Its definitely a Spike Lee movie, it brings all the good and sometimes bad that Lee brings to his movies. The casting of the movie is very well done, as with most Spike Lee movies. I'll get to the bad later in the review.
Of particular note is the portrayal of black soldiers in Vietnam and what they went through as opposed to other soldiers. From everything I know, its fairly accurate and shows well what they went through. Also, the portrayal of the different levels of PTSD that the vets still have and go through is very well shown.
The bad in this case is the length of the movie. It drags in places and could have used some editing to help with pacing and storytelling. It never drags enough to break suspension of disbelief, at least it didnt for me, but it definitely could have been a little faster paced in parts.
Overall, this is a good movie. It tells a great story in a way that is interesting and most importantly not predictable. I recommend this movie highly if you're a Spike Lee fan, and will tell you its worth a watch even if you arent a Spike Lee fan
Hearts in Atlantis (2001)
Only half of the story...
This movie completely ignores the second half of the book, which was a MUCH better and more engaging story about Bobby in college. Its a good movie for what its based on, but a movie about the second half of the book would be much better.
Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
It may be a comeback for Murphy or it may not be...
Some people are saying this this movie is a comeback for Eddie Murphy. Some are saying that Murphy never went anywhere. All I can tell you is that whether or not Murphy went anywhere, he is back. This movie is some of Murphy's best work since he did standup comedy. He has matured amazingly well into a great actor and screen personality.
His supporting cast here is amazing too. Its like he called up all of his friends and said "Hey, lets make a movie". Just like Rudy Ray Moore did in 1975 with the movie this movie is about. And it works very well.
Comeback or not, this movie will mark the beginning of a new career for Eddie Murphy. And he deserves it.
The Rookie: The Shake Up (2019)
Getting a bit preachy
I really like this show but its already pulling a lot of the tricks that older shows past their prime have to do. Things like preachy episodes such as tonight and mental health, and bringing in big name stars. All they need to do to hit the trifecta is have a musical episode where they all sing.
Speaking of music, does anyone know what song was playing in the mansion where the rich guy had the automatic weapon was? Its really familiar but I cant place it.
A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014)
Stupid as hell
This is one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. I would be interested in finding out what sort of idiot thinks stuff like this is funny. Stupid jokes, atrocious writing, terrible acting, this film has it all and then some. I am concerned for the mental health of anyone who thought this was a movie worth releasing. It was a genuine effort to sit through as much of it as I did. The producers of this "movie" owe me several IQ points as I lost them trying to watch this piece of crap. I hope the "actors" is this atrocity are ashamed of themselves. If they are dumb enough to think this was in any way a good project, however, that isn't likely. Really, I am being nice in my review, the words don't exist to accurately say what a bad movie this is. Watch at your own risk. This isn't a good movie in any way, shape or form.
