Surprisingly good, very fun watch without any filler content
2 October 2023
I've seen the first trailer to this movie a long time ago, and dismissed it as just another dumb, cheap crap movie that will come and go unnoticed. Boy, was I wrong!

My wife actually suggested we watch it, after we both read a couple of good opinions about it on various forums and reddit. So we gave it a go on a Sunday afternoon, and we absolutely didn't expect that we would actually really, REALLY, like it.

I think this is the only movie I've ever seen that has a steady pace, without insulting my intelligence with drawn out, slow scenes that are trying to be deep and meaningful. It does its job insanely good - it shows us the involved characters, their motivations and goals, and how everything happened for this amazing boy, Jann Mardenboroguh. No filler scenes and long, telenovela-style dialogs. Just pure storytelling and, of course, fast and amusing racing action scenes.

David Harbor and Orlando Bloom played their roles amazingly. David definitely stood out in the whole movie. I believe it's because he plays this sort of character perfectly.

But I need to add that Archie Madekwe was THE perfect casting choice for Jann Mardenborough. I'm glad they didn't go the awkward, ugly-ish, overweight, incel gamer route. It's 2023., we deserve a movie world where gamers and IT people are represented correctly. He did a fantastic job playing a teenager who is torn between his life dream, and his parents' wishes, but is serious enough to dream up what has become his life's story.

This being based/inspired by a true story just adds the cherry to the cake. Really, a delight to watch.

I would just like to conclude with this comment: Sony should've done a better job at promoting this movie because it deserves way more praise than it got.

I really wanted to like this, but...
16 May 2023
I was so excited - finally we're getting a new Vampire movie, and it's gonna be a comedy. Even better - it's got Nic Cage, Nicholas Coult and Akwafina in it. What more could you wish for?

Oh well, you could wish for at least a decent movie I guess, 'cos this movie ain't it. The story is dumb, characters are uninteresting, and even the amazing acting work done by the two Nics didn't help. It's just a bland, forgettable experience.

So, this movie disappointed on several fronts: It's a bad vampire movie, it's a bad comedy movie, it's a bad Nic Cage movie, it's a bad Akwafina movie, aaaaand - it's a bad movie.

Only good thing I can say about it is that it isn't too long, although watching it felt like it was around two hours rather than 90 minutes.

Not great, not terrible
23 April 2023
Ghosted is a semi-parody of action movies, mixed with a bit of comedy, romcom and whatever Ana's wig was doing the whole movie.

It's a nice sunday watch, if you want to rest your braincells and just enjoy people arguing, shooting, driving recklessly, then shooting again, while arguing all the time.

The introduction of the movie is wonky and weird, like a soap opera. When the actual plot begins, it picks up and it seems like the story is heading somewhere. Levels of funny also intensify. But soon enough, they overdo it with the "funny" to a point where it seems they're forcing jokes down our throats. I still don't hate the movie, it was fun to watch (and some cameos helped a lot).

Chris did a great job, Ana was a bit cringy from time to time, but all in all - it was a fun watch. Not the best movie you'll watch, nor will you remember it in 6 months.

I don't know how anyone with two working braincells can enjoy this movie
18 September 2022
Wife and I had to force ourselves (and each other) to finish this movie.

Story is all over the place, but nothing actually happens. Every conflict gets resolved with a 20 second conversation that was copy-pasted from a million other movies.

The chemistry between main actors doesn't exist. All other actors/extras are just... There for some reason? Nobody in the whole movie has a role or significance to the story. 20 minutes in, the movie could have ended.

I have never had to force myself so hard to watch a movie 'til the end. This is a disaster, and I hope my review will help at least one person avoid waste time on this.

Disgrace
26 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
DISCLAIMER: I've been a Spider-Man and Venom fan for most of my life.

This movie shouldn't exist. When people look back on it in a couple of years, it's gonna have the same treatment as that god forsaken Avatar: The Last Airbender live action s**tstorm.

You could've literally opened 5 comic books featuring the characters from this movie, flipped through the pages, and you'd already have a better idea for story, character development and action than this pile of crap has.

Venom being a comedian is terrible.

Eddy Brock behaving like a goddamn addict 90% of the movie is terrible.

Carnage having a monster voice instead of his WIDELY KNOWN AND LOVED high-pitched, insane, psycho-maniac voice is terrible.

Shriek being, basically, nothing in the whole movie is terrible.

Oh, and don't forget the awful dialogues and monologues - terrible!

Money-hungry Sony jumps at every opportunity to destroy amazing characters who have a huge fandom. They need to realize that they'll earn more money if they actually give a damn, do some research, and actually make good movies. Instead, they took TWO epic characters from one of the most successful comic franchises, and turned them into 90 minutes of bulls**t.

Only good thing were the visuals, thus the 2/10.

Don't waste a minute watching this movie, just watch the end-credits scene on youtube and be done with it.

A movie about nothing, but still enjoyable
8 December 2020
Picked it up without having a single clue what it's about. Ended up actually liking the movie, even though nothing actually really happened. It doesn't the 'Heroe's Journey' component, it's just a movie, with FANTASTIC actors, who delivered perfectly and that's it.

If I could complain about anything, it would be the length. I think it could've been 15 or 20 minutes shorter.

Holland, Pattinson, Skarsgard, Clarke, Stan, well.. Everyone did their job well, and made the movie worth watching.

This should become a franchise! Very fun to watch!
5 July 2020
Okay, first of all, a couple of disclaimers:

1. I am european, and have been watching Eurovision SC until 2011. I stopped watching because it stopped being about songs, and started being about politics

2. I am not a Will Ferrell fan. I usually don't enjoy his comedy type.

The review:

When I first saw the "Volcano Man" video, I thought that I should probably see this movie. I haven't seen a good comedy in ages, so I kind of hoped to get surprised.

Fast forward to today, and I started watching it, with no hopes whatsoever. Just the usual "let's spend two hours" mindset. I can say right here that I was surprised. The movie was a very fun watch - it had just enough comedy, drama and music. Nothing seemed forced, and all the Eurovision references were awesome to see/hear!

I love the lesson the movie is trying to send into the world, and hope that as many people as possible will actually understand what it is - music should be the no. 1 priority of not only this contest, but all music-shows around the world.

Surprisingly, the movie was quite emotional from time to time. They nailed the 'humanity' part of it, and I loved every second of it.

I understand that the IMDB score isn't as high as it should be. Many people, especially americans, have no actual idea what the Eurovision Song Contest is, and how much it used to mean for European music, so for them this is probably less interesting and fun.

As I said in the title, they should make a franchise, and each sequel should follow another European country on their path to the ESC.

Top 3 worst movies I've ever seen
3 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
You know what's good about B-Rated movies? You know they are low quality and production.

This movie didn't have a single scary scene, not a single thrill, and not a single funny scene. It was simply bland, empty and uninteresting.

A budget of $7 million, and all they could come up with is Michael Pena's worst role in his whole career? Michael Rooker also appeared, only to be replaced by a puppet falling off a cliff.

Right from the start, I realized it was a mistake to watch this film, but I decided to sacrifice two hours of my life just to see where it goes. It went to me giving it one star, and that's not something I do very often. If I could I would've given it zero.

The whole story is about a group of completely unrelated people arriving on an island where "everything is possible". Pardon me, "nothing is impossible". They say it at least two thousand times during the movie, just in case the viewer is a complete idiot and didn't get it earlier. After a lot of snake symbols and black goo dropping from random places, we begin to understand that the island isn't the paradise it seems to be, but exploits your deepest fantasies only to turn them into something grim and evil(?) or something like that.

I really can't choose whose performance in this movie was the worst. Everything seems just glued together to form somewhat of a story. Characters have no charisma at all, and the main guy - Rourke - is Michael Pena's agent's worst decision of all time. On top of that, all of the actors' and actresses' performances seem like a rehearsal, rather than a $7 million production.

I won't even get into details about the awful, gaping plot-holes throughout the movie. Let's just say that it's completely natural for a person who loses their brother, to forgive the man responsible for it just because he had a change of heart. All of that happened in less than 10 minutes of the movie. What?

TL;DR: If you've seen the movie - I'm sorry. If you haven't - please waste your time doing anything, ANYTHING else.

Can Hollywood please stop dumbing down movies?
26 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was kinda excited about this movie. It's a great idea, and that's all this movie was.

Building up suspense by doing what every other "thriller" does already made me dislike it by the 60 minute mark. The second part of the movie started out right, but then made me actually hate it.

Dumbing down the plot by making the main character paralyzed with fear in every other scene, the main villain having superhuman strength and agility, guards in an asylum using deadly firearms, and of course a restaurant not having a single camera to record how someone got murdered among other things, made me absolutely anxious. It was movie night for my wife and I, so I stayed until the end. Otherwise, I'd have shut it off after 30 or 40 minutes in.

And then the "thriller" part of the movie. Seriously, are we still supposed to be scared by sudden loud noises?

The cast did a good job, no issues there.

In short: The general idea was fantastic, the acting was great, the script was dumb.

Birds of Prey (2020)

I don't understand the hate, the movie is a fun watch and Margot nailed the character
24 March 2020
I came into this movie thinking it would be the biggest disaster since BvS only to be pleasantly surprised.

I've read a couple of reviews prior and I thought this is going to be a trainwreck. Yes, the movie had plot points, and yes the movie had some corny moments, and of course the hot topic "feminism" - but hey, wake up - this is a comic book female super villain movie. It's not supposed to make you contemplate existence or think about the secrets of the universe. It's supposed to be fun. And that's just what it is. Suicide Squad was as well. People hating on these movies, but loving Wonder Woman - a movie that is basically a huge plot hole, a pathetic try of a "feminist" labeled superhero blockbuster.

Birds of Prey is what it is - nothing more, nothing less than a very fun movie to watch!

Margot absolutely killed it as Harley Quinn - with her mood swings, sexiness, craziness, deadliness and everything in between. Winstead also did her role justice, as she introduced the socially awkward assassin into the franchise. I'd like to put some focus on Smollet-Bell who was on fire the entire time she was on screen.

People need to learn to enjoy movies again, and not tear them apart as if each and every single one has to be a masterpiece.

Shameful waste of amazing talent, and a disgrace to feminism
8 March 2020
I wan't expecting a great or epic movie coming into this, but I thought it might be fun to watch. The old C's Angels were also not a masterpiece, but still enjoyable. I ended up regretting the two hours of my life that I've wasted on this.

All these incredibly talented actresses and actors couldn't make the final product any better than the pile of crap it basically is. The whole movie is a cringefest, and I wouldn't recommend anyone to watch this, except if they wanted to see how bad a movie Elizabeth Banks (whom I like a lot) can direct.

Christen Stewart, Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott did a great job of playing the each of the angels, led by Elizabeth. Patrick Stewart, Sam Claflin, John Tucker and Chris Pang did great as well. So the acting is definitely not what's wrong here. It's the whole "women good, men bad" storyline that makes this movie something that no person with at least two grey cells in their brain can enjoy. Especially because it presents girl-power as a female version of toxic masculinity. I mean, is it really supposed to be funny to watch a guy getting his brutally kicked, stepped on and sodomized by two warrior women? All men are incompetent and evil, all women are superheroes. This just doesn't work.

I am sorry for Elizabeth, and all these talented people, that the movie couldn't be something more. It's also unfortunate that the reboot (or whatever it's supposed to be) couldn't be a good, interesting extension of the original film, starting up a good franchise for a future.

Steven Seagal movies are better than this, and he inexplicably walks on walls in one of them!

Venom (2018)
8/10
The critics are full of s**t!
21 October 2018
Disclaimer: I'm a long-time Venom and Marvel fan, I know a lot about the comic stories surrounding this character and his story.

Review: When the first information "leaked" online, I was already happy that they are going to make a Venom standalone movie. As most viewers know, Venom is an interesting character who first appeared within the Spider-Man comics, but later got his own comic book series, and appeared in other comics and media too.

I went to the theater to watch this movie with mediocre expectations. I was sure it won't be an awful movie, but also didn't expect the best movie of all times. What I've noticed right away is that too many people were expecting to see a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. I suppose that's the reason why all these stuck-up critics don't like it - they expected Infinity War or something like that.

The movie starts off slow, and most people won't like that part. I did, because it lets us meet Eddie Brock and properly introduces us into his life. After the 40 minute mark, things get going, and the movie becomes really enjoyable. It has its fun and funny moments, it has a love story that isn't shoved down our throats, but seems natural and realistic, and it has a really well made villain. Tom Hardy has proven his worth times and times before, and this time he was really carrying the movie on his back. His fantastic acting and his natural cocky nature reminded me of the Eddie Brock from the comics. He made me believe that he is actually Eddie throughout the movie. This is especially hard to do for actors who have had a role that defined them for a wide audience, like Bane from Batman did define Hardy (similar happened to Johnny Depp with Jack Sparrow - the "can't unsee" effect), but he did really well in this one.

I feel like someone behind the scenes really wanted this movie to work, and for me it did. It has its flaws, but every movie does. What's important is that the audience, made of people aged 5 to 50, was pleased and had genuine moments of laughter and excitement. That's what matters in the end.

I gave Venom the score of 8/10. It's a fun action movie, and it doesn't deserve the bad reviews that critics have given it.

John Wick (2014)

The Action movie we all deserve
3 January 2017
For years, decades, Hollywood tried to shove stupid action movies down our throats.

Every bullet misses, punches aren't heavy at all, and the hero aaaaalways has to say something.

John Wick, featuring the fantastic, amazing, wonderful Keanu Reeves, is showing Hollywood how it's supposed to be done. In a 100 minutes long movie, which is actually rather short for today's trends, the movie makes us feel like John feels, hate like John hates, and cheer as John kills. It's one of the few non-superhero action movies, that wives and husbands can watch together, and completely enjoy it.

While respecting the "The Heroes Story" timeline, John Wick mixes it up, and shows us all that all it takes to create a bad-ass Action hero and a great action movie (franchise).

Shoot, kill, repeat. No senseless talking, explaining, dramatizing. John Wick does exactly what every single one of us watchers would want to do in his situation.

Great movie, great fun, awesome Keanu.

The only thing that could improve the movie would be Brendan Fraser.

Timeless, fantastic, brilliant!
4 January 2014
I was a child when I saw this movie the first time, so, of course, it was really boring to me. A couple of years later, when I grew up, I watched it again and realized what a magnificent piece of art this movie is.

Every time I would see the ending or hear "Let the Sunshine in" I would cry a couple of tears. Everything in this movie is real life, emotions, struggle, misunderstandings and compassion.

I wish there were more movies like this one - where the director has paid attention to every character and every scene to tell a wonderful and sad story.

Horrible attempt to promote Tom Cruise
26 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I have to be honest, I expected it. As soon as I saw the poster, I knew "Cruise and Diaz? Hell no!". But I decided to give it a shot...

I will start with what I don't like: Almost everything!

As soon as the movie started I knew I'm gonna suffer for the next 109 minutes. The movie has so many flaws and the acting was at the level of some '90s soap operas. Stupid, empty dialogs and childish looks gave me the feeling someone wanted to put two adults to play teenagers.

The story? Very disappointing. Our dear Cruise somehow failed to leave the impression of a secret agent (probably because he was always trying to show that smile of his which made him an actor), while Diaz showed that she still can't act any further than whining and showing her fake teeth. Also, I don't think real secret agents steal the most expensive cars to drive around...

Now for the worst part: Explosions and bullets. Yeah, yeah, I get it. Explosions are a must in action movies. Great! But this movie had the most idiotic ways to use explosions and bullets. (warning, spoiler ahead) I stopped counting at 5billion bullets fired, and then all of a sudden, even though he used the past 100 minutes to avoid bullets, Cruise walks slowly through a shower of bullets fired from automatic guns without getting hit? Come on!!! (end of spoiler)

The explosions-counter wasn't really busy, but my brain almost exploded because of the stupid way the movie used explosions like (spoiler) the airplane crash (end of spoiler).

And now, for the good stuff. After watching 109 minutes, and suffering from different kinds of nervousness, I managed to find something that is great in the movie:

1. The cars - everyone loves to see old timers, whether they're wrecked or look like new, they're beautiful.

2. (MAJOR SPOILER) the sentence "someday is an excuse for never" really hit me. (end of spoiler)

I regret spending my money on such an awful movie.
