You fang chu zu (2002)
Could be so much more
This movie intertwines the stories of several residents of a KL rooming house as seen through the eyes of the newest resident, a young drifter called Berg. Each character is interesting, disturbing and pathetic in their own way, providing an odd framework for the movie that is somehow missing something. Every character has some aspect that piques the curiosity, but stops there. Berg seems affected but unaffected by everything he sees and he lets the viewer into so little of his own character that it is difficult to identify with him. I found the movie enjoyable enough to watch, but left the theater feeling like there was something missing.

Peeling the onion
The movie centers entirely around the interrogation of 6 people about the murder of a homeless girl relatively new to their Istanbul neighborhood. The stories told by each of the characters about their community, neighbors and the murder start out innocently, but bit by bit the oniony layers of the rotten story start to be peeled away revealing that nothing is as rosy as the neighbors would like to believe. Clever editing of the ever changing versions of stories by the different characters provides an often humorous, quick paced, entertaining film that in the end leaves you questioning where the facade ends and the truth really begins.

Sex and the City of Hong Kong
This movie is Hong Kong's answer to Sex and the City and there's not a Charlotte in the house. Barbara Wong interviews HK women (of all ages (even 4 year olds), all walks of life, all sexual preferences, singletons, wives, mistresses, prostitutes) with an all women crew and gets some wild and frank responses. The documentary is bold, honest, funny and touching. Highly recommended to any man who wants to understand women better and any woman who wants a fun girls' night out.
