Possession (1981)
I love this film.
I just saw a new print of this film, I had been wanting to see it for a long time but even trying to get it on Netflix is impossible. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen. Sam Neill is amazing in this film, and I'm not a huge fan of his, but he brings a haunting and violent and brutal and loving energy to his portray of the scorned husband. And, of course, Isabelle is a powerhouse. The last scene in this movie is one of the most effecting, yet most befuddling endings I've ever watched. I can't believe a movie has taken the top spot on my movie list from Days of Heaven, but here it is. Find this movie, watch it, revel in it. And then pass it on.
The Vow (2012)
Ummmm no.
This movie was the worst. Channing Tatum is a guilty pleasure for me, I've gone out of my way to see almost all of his movies. This was even worse than Dear John, which is saying a lot. It has a lot in common with Dear John in the way that the story doesn't really go anywhere. The romantic storyline just peters out toward the end. Channing plays our lovable lunkhead hero, who loves his girl through hell and high water. But then suddenly, because the story demands it, he just gives up on her?? I thought this movie was supposed to be about them fighting to maintain their vows? Instead, he tried a bit, then it got hard, Rachel McAdams got her hair frosted and wore j.crew, and then they're signing the divorce papers. Wah wah. Not good. It never veered off into the 'l'amour fou' (crazy love) which is the magical element that made "The Notebook" the modern romantic movie to end all romantic movies. Still waiting for the new Notebook, Hollywood.
Father's Day (2011)
Meh.
Wanted to like this, REALLY wanted to like this. But I dunno... not the great movie everyone acted like it was. Yes, there were copious amounts of blood and nudity. But there was something missing for me. A story, maybe? It seemed like a bunch of dudes sat around at the kitchen table and threw out a lot of ideas for a movie, and then they crammed it all in to make Father's Day. I'm a girl, and I'm not a big fan of bro humor, which is 99 percent of the movie. I do love a good chainsaw killing, though. Best parts for me: When the dude with the eye-patch beat up the bad guy on the bridge. Points for production value! And the casting was pretty great for a low-budget. Oh, and the cats at the end! Worst parts: The slutty Mary character was the worst actress in the whole bit, totally miscast. The story was very bloated, and by the end I didn't really know/care what was going on.
So, there you have it. Seems like a fan-boy favorite, which is probably what they were going for.
