Beyond Borders (2003)
Best or Worst?
I've never seen a movie get such divergent reviews from people. It's like there were two different movies showing with the same title.
But, no, there is only one movie, but two types of viewers. If you are looking for a movie to entertain you, one that you can watch for a couple of hours and then go back to your safe life, and not be affected, don't bother seeing this movie. You'll be disappointed.
If, instead, you're the kind of person who sees the world as a place without borders, who cares about what is really going on, who doesn't want the truth covered over with the veneer of Hollywood, you might like this film.
I've spent much of my life in the developing world and I've seen some of what the movie is about, in real life. I loved the movie. If it were up to me, I would make every American over the age of six be forced to watch it, and after, to do a report on it. It's a disturbing movie, and to me, I'm more disturbed by those who are not disturbed by the film. It's about real issues, it's not a love story. If that's all you see, then you've missed the point. If you want to get an overview of the facts around this movie's theme, you can go to a site for the United Nations Refugee Center. If you liked this film, you might like "Nowhere in Africa".
Nirgendwo in Afrika (2001)
what a treat
I'll skip the summary, since there are lots of reviews here. This is one of the most beautifully filmed movies that I have ever seen. The acting, the screenwriting, the music are all first rate. I've watched it three times and found more in it each time. It brings to mind, "The Poisonwood Bible" a fine book by Barbara Kingsolver. I highly Recommend this film.
