Come True (2020)
10/10
Goes a long way over its budget - Good acting, great atmosphere
11 November 2021
If you're a fan of horror, but not gore and slashers, then this may be your jam.

Sarah is a young girl who has problems in her life and suffers from insomnia. She seeks a special clinic to take part in a sleep test along with other subjects. Things take a weird turn soon, as the researchers, herself and the audience dive into some pretty dark corners of the human mind.

Anthony Scott Burns manages to surpass the budget limitations to create a very original and atmospheric horror film with fantastic visuals, a matching soundtrack, good performances and a script that satisfies (with the possible exception of the ending for some).

Come True reminded me of Cronenberg, Altered States and Kiyoshi Kurosawa's movies, along with other things. If you're looking for a different horror experience give it a shot.

Greener Grass (2019)
9/10
Amazing, surreal and completely original
8 June 2020
My mind was blown by Greener Grass, a completely over the top satire of American suburbia. More than that, my thirst for something original in this horrific cinematic landscape of BOREDOM was satisfied.

The script is a bit disjointed, however the movie has a lot going for it. The direction, cinematography, camerawork, montage, costumes and acting are fantastic while the music, or more specifically the use of music, is very interesting.

Overall a must-see for anyone who likes different comedies/satires or just wants to see something unlike anything else.

A guide to living a fulfilling life
25 May 2017
As one critic put it, Only Lovers Left Alive is a great guide to being human and living a fulfilling life.

Its protagonists, two immortal and endlessly savvy vampires, are trying to find new interest in a world that they think has gone awry. Beautiful night shots show them moving through Detroit and Tangiers, discussing art, historical figures and the meaning of it all.

Jarmousch uses this theme to explore a fundamental problem all humans face: How to experience everything in life when you only live once? He makes the case that even these immortal vampires end up facing pretty much the same problems, such as boredom, inability to connect, apathy and disappointment, as the rest of the species seems more and more awful to them.

For Jarmousch and his characters, love and art are the ultimate antidotes to this problem, as they return to it again and again in order to find new meaning and a reason to carry on.

One would assume that a film with such a theme would very easily sway into pretense, but not so in the hands of this uber-cool director. Definitely one of the best movies of this decade.

Lots of fun and great characters
25 May 2017
This show isn't your typical super-serious historical drama. Instead, it doesn't take itself too seriously, but still it delivers in high drama when it has too. The production quality is excellent and I especially like the characters and actors, they are just so arresting. I'm really glad they renewed the show and I hope to watch many more episodes in the years to come.

Very mature themes, well executed
25 May 2017
GitS:SAC borrows a lot of the philosophical musings from the original film and manga, but it goes a long way into further developing this particular world and showing the various ways that technology interferes and redefines what is human. All this is explored both in the series' core "complex" episodes, as well as its "stand alone episodes", which show one different story at a time. If you are interested in non politically correct, thoughtful futurism, this is the show for you. It covers issues like AI, body augmentation, the roots of self-conscience, evolution and so on. I really like the fact that it also explores the political landscape of this not so distant future. Overall, a great experience.

Thought provoking film with superb visual style and music
4 January 2017
Ghost in the Shell (1995) is one of the best manga to anime movie transfers of all time and director Mamoru Oshii had great material to work with from the original artist, Masamune Shirow.

It is Shirow who came up with a rather complex, but accessible and rewarding story about the emergence of AI in a future world of extreme interconnection and cyborgization. GitS deals with what it means to be human when your very conscience can be uploaded or high-jacked, and your body is 100% machine except for your brain. To that end, it takes a cue from eastern philosophy and the result is probably the deepest meditation on the subject ever put to film.

However, the movie is much more than that. The world building is phenomenal and Oshii takes his time to present the city through the use of a few exquisite silent sequences that only use music. There are also strong action scenes to satisfy anyone who likes mecha.

Obviously, the anime cannot address all the various themes and subjects of the manga, but it gets the main points right and it does the most it can. It is a creative transfer that does the material justice and together with the fantastic eerie music by Kenji Kawai, it constitutes a solid 10/10 rating from me.

The Odd Couple (2015–2017)
8/10
unoriginal, but funny
23 February 2015
The Odd Couple is by no means perfect, but it has a few nice characters and some good laughs and with the right amount of work, it can become truly great. Having seen just the first episode, Perry seems a bit disjointed having to work at a sitcom again after so many years, but the fun is there and the fast pace works just fine.

Not all the secondary characters are great. The males are pretty lukewarm and the one that stands out is Emily (L. Sloane)

Bottom line: If you are a fan of Perry's then watch it. It's not as original as his other shows, but its good. I hope they don't cancel it like the other shows...

Go On (2012–2013)
10/10
really great feel-good show
26 March 2013
This show really is a keeper! It's radically different from the hysterical sitcoms we've grown accustomed to and that's great. It doesn't have canned laughs, or some of the usual formulaic episodes that you see in every comedy show from the 80s onwards. Instead, it relies on quirky humor and interesting characters to make you laugh.

If I had to compare it to another show, i would say it most resembles Scrubs, but without the melancholic parts.

Anyway, the show is cool and i hope they renew it. I give it a 9/10 because it makes me that much happier every time I watch it. Do yourselves a favor and check it out.

Kobe Doin' Work (2009 TV Movie)
8/10
It Delivers
19 March 2012
Kobe Doin' Work is not your typical Spike Lee joint and it's not your typical documentary. However, it totally delivers because it stays true to its title: It simply lets you see what a game day is like from the eyes of Kobe.

Needless to say, this joint is only for basketball fans. And if you love basketball, then you're gonna enjoy this a lot because you'll finally get a glimpse of what it takes to play at such a high level. Also, it was very interesting to see all the talk in the bench and in the locker room.

Yes, Kobe comes off a bit too good in the film, but who cares? I didn't view this film to see Kobe on trial or something. And I wish there could be more films like this for other great players. Who wouldn't want Mike Doin' Work for example? Overall, a very interesting film.

Law with a lot of spark
20 October 2010
It's a very good show. It takes the classic law formula but gives it a fresh new flavor that really works. It combines courtroom drama/tension with humorous moments, some romance and a little bit of Nip/Tuck lifestyle. The cast and the chemistry between the actors are solid, while Beluschi delivers some great moments. Interesting sub-plots as well, for example the relationship between Kaczmarek and the district attorney. Can't wait to see if they are gonna bring in a few good guest stars to the show, that would be awesome. Also, the city of Las Vegas is filmed a bit differently than usual, maybe in a classier way. Leaves you with a strong feeling at the end, so you know it was worth watching.
