Gods of Olympia (2002)
Highly enjoyable worst movie ever made
Wow, this must have been the worst movie I ever saw. No plot, ridiculous dialog and bad filming. The actors must have been friends of the maker of this film, 'cos none of these people could act. But I did enjoy myself watching this movie. This homeless guy actually wears something that looks like shoe polish on his cheeks, so we know he's a homeless person. There's an erotic scene with fittingly soft lighting, but too soft, so you can't make anything out. You feel like you're watching an infomercial. One in which the customer got lines, but doesn't know how to say them correctly, 'cos, well, he's no actor. But II do believe it's great the people that made this movie got excited about this idea and actually got out and made the picture. Unbelievable, but great.
Saving Grace (2000)
Enjoyable though not very accurate
Saving Grace is a feel good movie with it's heart in the right place. Grace is recently widowed and realizes her late husband left her with a lot of debts. She could lose her lovely house and sees no other solution to her misery than to start growing marijuana. She's living in a beautiful village where most viewers would love to live and the villagers are all wonderful people most viewers would love to have as neighbors. There's only one thing wrong with this picture and that is the way it portraits the effect marijuana has on it's user. It's obvious none of the actors or writers of this film actually ever did smoke the stuff. The way the villagers act after smoking a joint is ridiculous and only supposedly funny. It's precisely in those scenes that wit is replaced by English slapstick, and that is a pity in a movie that is none the less very enjoyable.
Focus (2001)
eyes wide shut
This movie impressed me. What I liked most was the performance of William H. Macy, who plays a square white guy, living the normal life in a mediocre job, sharing a house with his mom in a nice suburb. Everything changes when he starts to wear glasses which allegedly make him look Jewish. It's by no means the message against prejudice and injustice alone that makes this movie worth watching, it's particularly the way the movie shows Newmans reactions to them. At first he is furious, he can't believe what's happening to him when he loses his job. Then he tries to ignore the signs, acting oblivious to the way people react to his appearance. He even tries to join the same group of men that is harassing him, in a desperate attempt to turn the tide. All this guy wants is to live an easy life, he doesn't want to be a part of what's happening to him, but eventually he realises he can't keep his eyes shut an he has to act. The fact that all trouble starts by putting on some glasses just shows how randomly victims of prejudice and hatred are picked. It doesn't matter who or what you are or what you do, if they choose to hate you, they will.
Harvard Man (2001)
high pitched
So...Joey Lauren Adams is this professor in philosphy......With that voice????
It somehow didn't seem right to me. At least we've learned about the dangers of drugs. Before you can say LSD, you're entangled in a web of deceit, with both the FBI and the mafia on your tail. No use to get philosophical about it, just say no. As Buffy would say: 'cos it's Wrong!!!
The Company (2003)
if you wanna dance... Dance
last night I went to see this movie, cos I usually like movies by Robert Altman. Some of them, like Short Cuts and the Player, belong to my favorite movies of all time, Hence my surprise when I watched this film, called The Company. It's kind of hard to tell what it was about. About this dance company, I reckon, but where's the plot? Dance movies usually tell a story, often it's a ridiculous one (flashdance), but at least the story is there. In this movie the storyline is just an excuse to show a lot of ballet. That's okay, but why the attempt to tell this tale about an ambitious dancer (Neve Campbell) who falls in love with this cook, then falls down during a performance and hurts her arm? It's obvious it takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to be a succesfull dancer, but it would have been more interesting to watch a documentary about it, instead of a totally uninteresting movie. Neve Campbell tries very hard to come across as this ballerina, an although she dances rather well, and looks fittingly skinny, she's no ballet dancer, and the difference in style and elegance between her and the other dancers, is way too big. But well, she wrote the story, and she produced the film, so I guess it's only fair she got to star in it, as well. If you do like the ballet, and you wanna watch a lot of dancing, then go see this movie, but do not expect anything else.
Simply Irresistible (1999)
a whole lotta crab
i do like SMG a lot, i think Buffy is a good show partly because gellar is so perfectly cast for the part. But she does make some pretty bad career decisions. Okay, she looks great, she plays well, but what a stupid, terrible movie this turned out to be. First of all, crabs are not cute (not even when they dance, that's just creepy) After half an hour of watching i was still wondering when the movie would finally begin. There's no chemistry between the two actors (why does she like this dude anyway)The plot, there is no plot, the movie begins and ends, and it's very hard to keep interested in what's happening in between. Although it could have been a nice movie, if somebody would have taken the trouble of writing one, it just doesn't work. I do wish to see more of Sarah michelle Gellar, but could it please be in a good movie, for a change.
