Atlas (2024)
6/10
I was expecting a far worse movie, but I was entertained
24 May 2024
Seeing Atlas starring Jennifer Lopez pop up on Netflix doesn't necessarily leave you with a lot of hope that it's going to be a good movie, but I surprisingly liked it much more than I expected.

It may not start off particularly strong, but it gets going and I feel Jennifer Lopez did a better job acting than I expected, and I do remember her doing fairly well at times, like in Out of Sight.

Anyway, it really gets going after about 20-30 minutes, and the action is very well done in my opinion and fun to watch. Think Halo but even more action at it's best. She doesn't trust AI but slowly learns to trust the AI she is forced to work with and develops a bond that grows throughout, and I enjoyed that.

I think many Netflix movies get unfairly rated poorly and of course anything starring JLo will as well. As usual, it wouldn't surprise me if the very low ratings came from people who didn't even watch it. I really don't feel if I was going to give something a 4 or lower, I would even continuing watching it and didn't feel I could give a fair review (unless I was in a theater with friends or family and had to sit through a movie I hated).

Anyway, if you like action and sci fi, and go in for some fun not expecting some masterpiece, I think you will definitely be entertained.

I thought this was great
4 July 2023
Probably worth an 8.5 or so, but the first few episodes took a bit to really get me totally engrossed. But then it REALLY picked up and got a lot more interesting, especially when it had a great unexpected turn a few episodes later. Definitely a very solid drama out of Greece worth checking out. I do agree it could have been tightened up a bit into maybe 10 episodes but overall it was solid and kept getting better and better. I felt the acting was pretty solid and it had a number of interesting characters. I am so glad Topic brings us so much content from different countries I otherwise never would have heard of.

Season 2 one of most entertaining Netflix Original seasons ever.
17 March 2023
Season 2 was one of the most entertaining Netflix Original seasons ever. I struggle to think of a better one. Fast paced, GREAT fight scenes, so many great characters, and just doesn't really have any down time where it gets boring as many shows do. It just entertains from the very start to the very end. To think of something as good or better from Netflix, I may have to go all back to my all time favorite, Sense8. There are some other good ones, like Witcher season 2 and some others but it's hard to remember something this entertaining. Arcane was good, but not this good. This is definitely a must watch.

Season one was great..season 2 was not as good, but it's a unique show I'll roll with
15 February 2023
This show has so many characters, dynamics, etc, that I had to rewatch season 1 to get ready for season 2. Season 1 is strong and has some master class episodes like episode 5. The one thing about this series is that you wonder who you want to root for.

I have seen some mention Sean, but I find him as one of the most unlikalbe characters. I think my favorite characters are Lale, Luan, Shannon and Elliott, who makes questionable decisions, but just seems to want to survive.

I do feel like some others, that there are some weird things, like during by gun fights why does no one come out of their apartments or hotel rooms to see what's up. Then I think "Would I? Hell on." But then the cops never seem to be on the scene quickly.

Anyway, if you want something unique with so many different rival gangs, angles, and some brutal violence, this show is for you. Season 2 was not nearly as good as season 1, and I don't particularly think they even needed to add the new major character they did, but I still always wanted to see what happened next. Hope to see a season 3. As for rating seasons, I'd put season 1 at a 9 and season 2 at a 7, so I leave the average at 8.

1899 (2022)

Creators
22 November 2022
Two years after Dark's finale, the creators return with a bigger budget, a more ambitious project, and the heavy weight of expectation on their shoulders. Fortunately, 1899 delivers and gives you a mind-bending puzzle that will keep you guessing until the last moment, as the story twists and turns in unexpected ways.

Some may find it a slow moving mystery as was Dark, even though some may not recall how slow that moved in it's first season and how so many questions were left unanswered.

1899 is so compelling and well-constructed, it's not just about the shock of a reveal but about all of the context surrounding what exactly is revealed. Because of how well this world is built and these characters are developed, instead of it being about the crazy twist, it's more about this story opening up in new, huge, unexpected directions.

I will say that you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT watch with dubs, or it won't make sense given that the intent of the directors having such an international cast with so many languages (yet still mostly in english) was that the disarray of the crew made things more hectic, though it was very interesting to see the people from all different countries try to work together when they couldn't understand together. They had to communicate with their tones and their eyes and their hands.

This was good and would be much more popular if it had a better title
30 October 2022
I noticed the name of the book was "Half Bad" which is a much better title and would hold much more appeal to Netflix viewers. Why they decided on a name like this with Bastard and Devil in it is beyond me. It didn't sway me from watching it but it surely will many others. If you like Fate:Winx Saga, Discovery of Witches, Fort Salem: Motherland, The Witcher and basically any fantasy show, I think you will enjoy this. I say give it a shot despite the bad title. Netflix should see if it can be changed like they changed La Casa de Papel to Money Heist and it suddenly became much more popular despite that show getting worse after the name change and as it went on.

Awesome show
28 August 2022
I don't leave reviews often but had to leave a review because this offbeat revenge action thriller series is surprisingly good and people need to watch it.

There is so much talk about how people don't like Netflix but then they never watch the non mainstream stuff like this and never seem to find these hidden gems available on the app.

WATCH IT. You will not be disappointed. I ended up watching it all in one sitting.

It doesn't take long to get going, is a very unique series, and you will be hooked by the end of the first episode if not before. The lead really does a great job as do several other actors. Get the word out so it gets some viewership and we can get more series like this!

Fun addicting action
25 July 2022
Very entertaining show. I wish they wouldn't have cut the season into 2 parts, but definitely looking forward to the conclusion. Many seem to think it ended like that but it was just that they cut the season in 2 like Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Money Heist and many others.

Need season 2 on streaming service in U.S.!
15 February 2022
This is a solid show with interesting characters who are well developed and have depth, and the business/politics is interesting as well. But the heart of it is the characters and how all of this is impacting their lives in big ways. I like how they really focus on the four characters. The two female leads are great, particularly the one who plays Anna. Really looking forward to season 2 if I can find it anywhere.

If you're looking for something like Alias or Nikita, you should like it
29 January 2022
It's obvious many of the reviews and ratings so far are from people who watched 10-20 minutes of it or 1 episode.

This isn't the Wire but it's a fun action/spy thriller series that is different. It's certainly not a top notch quality show but very few of those are out there.

There are few good action spy type thrillers so it's nice to have stuff like this for a change given most of the other stuff that comes out.

This is probably more like a 7.5-8 but given people are rating it 1-4 and plainly say in their review they watched only 20 minutes of it, I thought I'd try to balance a little of that out.

Solid Reboot
23 December 2021
While few movies period are as good as the original, this was a solid movie that had many similarities to the original along with some great new actors and characters.

This was far better than both sequels and while it's a nice stand alone movie, a sequel or sequels could be made, not that it's necessary.

The first two sequels were not necessary as the first movie, had it stopped there, would have been thought of as one of the better movies or at least sci fi movies ever.

But since the sequels were made, this was a nice addition to get The Matrix back to it's roots.

Too many probably either don't like sequels of great movies to be made and therefore give it a low rating despite not watching it, or only measure it relative to the original rather than all movies, of which most of what is out there is crap and unoriginal like this.

Movies like this with so much thought put into them, and sci fi movies in general are far too rare, so it is a shame people don't enjoy unique, original sci fi any more.

About the only real complaint I have is that the first 45 minutes or so could have been cut in half. I also enjoyed the inclusion of at least 3 of the main characters from Sense8.

Great bounce back in season 3
25 November 2021
Season 3 was nonstop entertainment. Season 2 was a little slow and up and down after the solid season 1 but season 3 was nice. You could complain about death confirmation and some things like that but if you're going to go along with a series where the alter babies DNA to make them super soldiers, you are obviously overlooking what is realistic to begin with to enjoy a fun action series with a great lead.

Action packed entertainment
28 October 2021
If you're expecting Godfather: The Series, this isn't it.

But if you want some action packed entertainment? Watch this. Is it perfect? No, of course not. No action movies or series with gunfights are. I mean Die Hard, one of the best action movies of all time, is ridiculously unrealistic. Any revenge movies, John Wick, Taken, etc, those types are far from realistic...but you know what you are getting into

Someone complained about one crew (they refer to as "good guys") being able to kill plenty of guys, but you are talking about guys who were obviously military special forces wearing bulletproof suits, highly trained, sharpshooters with state of the art weaponry, against a bunch of drug dealers and their hired help. I mean of course these guys will be hard to take down, just like they are in wartime.

It's not for the faint of heart either. No the acting isn't great but there are a few solid characters you want to pull for even if they may have created their own messes.

If you like to pick things apart that may seem unrealistic, this may not be for you but if you just want to watch something full of action and some good real characters, it's definitely worth a watch. I did see a mention of Snabba Cash. That was a solid one too.

The movie was pretty good, but the main character was maybe the stupidest character in the history of tv shows
21 September 2021
Wow he seemed clueless. And selfish before the game, then somewhat unselfish during, unless it suited him. But it would have been nice to have a smarter lead character.

Maggie Q and Samuel Jackson great, Michael Keaton unnecessary
22 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Some great action scenes, but everything about the movie was better before Michael Keaton showed up, and to be honest, his role in the movie was really completely unnecessary.

First of all, I couldn't buy him being a great fighter at 70 years old, even though he was maybe supposed to be mid 50s. He didn't even look fluid. I mean Nikita after being tortured and hanged, beat up 4 younger tough guys.

I get it that maybe she was not trying as hard against him, but even seeing Keaton fight others or get the drop on her...just couldn't buy it. If she was THAT good, she would have disposed of him quickly...or subdued him.

And their dialogue was a bit cringy. Just a strange character to have.

It just seemed much more exciting with higher stakes in the fighting before Keaton showed up and they were seemingly messing around a bit.

Not the best role for Keaton to me. Samuel Jackson had kind of declined lately in things but I thought he was really good in this.

I think they'd be good in serious assasin missions. Samuel Jackson and her or just her...if they had more moviews, but I doubt they will. Some of these good ones like this and Unlocked (Noomi Rapace) with great female leads that could start a franchise seem to fly under the radar while we see multiple John Wick and Equalizer movies...I like them both but I love female leads too. Glad they are doing another Atomic Blonde (I think).

It's crazy so many critics and reviewers here don't understand this movie or don't rate it for what it is, a very entertaining summer action movie
2 July 2021
This was a well done, smart action movie with a simpler time travel concept than most time travel movies which often contradict themselves.

It is very entertaining, with an original concept (yes, you could compare bits and pieces to other movies like Edge of Tomorrow or Aliens but the entire concept was different).

A ton of action, some heartfelt moments, mostly solid characters, an interesting turn when in the final act, and just a really solid overall summer action movie, much better than something like the generic Independence Day with Will Smith and his one liners.

There were a couple of things I question, but minor things like a character wanting to save a loved one that would have been deemed irrelevant if he followed the instructions that would lead to a solution (but I chalked up to his human emotion and him not thinking clearly when in a heavy action battle)..and another character was a bit talkative and annoying at times.

But these are minor things. Watch and enjoy a really fun solid summer action movie that is probably the best action movie, especially if you like sci fi, that any streaming service has offered so far.

Line of Duty: Episode #6.7 (2021)
Season 6, Episode 7

This finale was not near a 1...the show was a 10 so this didn't live up to that as a 7

Warning: Spoilers
Buckles didn't seem like a good villain.

But the cops behind this were no masterminds for the most part (and you could argue he was by playing dumb) but the OCGs (Organized Crime Groups) were behind it all controlling the cops by getting dirt on them with murders (frozen bodies) with the cop's DNA planted on them.

These cops just simply had to follow the instructions of the OCG or go down for murder....or get murdered.

The main characters were great, they came together at the end, and it was not totally satisfying, but not nearly as bad as it is being made out to be.

Strike Back (2010–2020)

Decided to go back and watch the last two seasons
18 February 2021
So I loved the first 5 seasons. Then I started reading how it was awful after that. I remember starting season 6 but only got partway into the first episode...just seemed so different.

Many reviewers say all the last seasons sucked, but I just finished season 7 and it was pretty entertaining.

The reason I started with season 7 is because there were some reviews that say season 6 was really bad but the last two seasons were actually good again.

Now the team members are not nearly what they used to be, especially the female one, who acts ridiculous, and must have super strength to win a fight against one of the bad guy characters in season 7, and this comes from someone who typically loves female protagonists. The guys are ok. The team lead in season 7 and I guess 8 is actually Jamie Bamber from Battlestar Galactica, and he's pretty good.

But the single thing that bothers me the most is that some of the team members, particularly the female and the guy with the beard, hold their pistols sideways as they aim and shoot, like gangsters. I'm sorry but NO well trained soldier or even police officer or anyone who wants good aim is going to shoot like that. Can you imagine going to a gun range with a target and turning your gun sideways? I mean you need to put it in your sight and aim.

I honestly cannot believe they do this. Even the other characters do it on occasion, outside of the russian that works with them some. She may be the best character in season 7.

Anyway, it was still entertaining enough. This was never a really high quality show but was extremely entertaining, and season 7 was entertaining enough, despite the drop off in characters. I lowered it from a 9 to an 8. Season 7 was probably more like a 7...which is generally something I think it pretty good. Maybe a 6 because of the guns...but even so, 1 season at 6 and 5 seasons at 9, still averages to above an 8, but assuming 6 is worse, an 8 rating is fair.

I noticed the episode ratings for season 8 are higher than season 7 so that's good, and I will continue watching on to season 8.

This may be my favorite show on Netflix
19 April 2020
Certainly their best original series. It's amazing. It took me so long to watch as I never felt compelled to watch it, but finally watched it because I ran out of things to watch....and man was it gripping. It takes a while to lay the groundwork, so stick with it, but then midway through the first season it really takes off, and boy is it fun.

It really has everything...it sci fi, action, heart, adventure, romance, everything, and just brings really brings out emotions in the viewer.

I even watched a second time within months. I rarely watch shows a second time, and never that quickly.

Some of these reviews that get turned off by some things that happen in life, and view everything through a political lense, should be ignored.

This is extremely entertaining
25 January 2020
If you like Fargo season 2 (one of the best seasons of television ever in my opinion), Banshee, with a backdrop of early Sons of Anarchy, you'll love this.

It's got a great story, great characters, an interesting way of telling the story in a Quentin Tarantino-ish sort of way, with interesting flashbacks to flesh out the characters, and just overall a great time.

Very hard to find shows like this. I wish it would have been advertised more. I just happened to see a trailer while watching another show on Hulu, and took a break to watch this, binged it in two days, and went back to the other one, but have yet to see another trailer for this.

If you like this, get the word out so more people watch this as I fear it won't have a season two which I would love to see.

Better Than Us (2018–2019)

People mention this is a ripoff of Humans, but it's different, and Humans was a ripoff of Akta manniskor
10 September 2019
The Swedish version Akta manniskor was the first of these types of shows, and the American rip off of that was Humans, and it was extremely similar.

People keep mentioning this is a rip off of Humans, but besides the fact that Humans itself was a rip off of another show, Better Than Us is completely different, and is really about one robot and it's evolutions and various parties trying to get it.

I loved Akta manniskor but I really love this one too. It is really entertaining. Tiny spoiler in the following. There are a few bits near the end which were not as interesting, like the robot's interest in intimacy, though that is explained well as that was their original purpose when developed in China due to the lack of females due to the one child laws they had had in the past.

I think it had a lot of good characters. Some not great ones, but most of them were really interesting characters to follow with multiple different good stories within the show.
