Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Mildly Optimistic
Hmm, my fingers are crossed and I am mildly optimistic about this attempt at a pre-Kirk Star Trek.
After the disappointment of Enterprise (Xindi, sigh) and the horrible 1st season (never watched more) of Discovery (tardigrades, gimme a break), it would be really hard to make anything worse.
There are some engaging characters and decent acting with a bit of light-heartedness thrown in similar to TOS.
Geez, the ship is something out of Architectural Digest which may be a bit too overboard.
Still, there are a concerns. A little too much cheekiness in tense situations. Vulcans (Spock) are supposed to only have mating cycles (right?) not sex all the time. The doctor's daughter storyline was a bit much (keeping her "alive" in a transporter?). The Gorn, hmm? They birth, grow immediately into speed demons, and then apparently become sloth-like (as in TOS)...oh, and Spock didn't remember encountering them in TOS. I hate it when they ignore the canon and previous history.
Still, it has the potential to be a good pre-Kirk ST if they don't mess it up (think Xindis and tartigrades-like ideas).
Echo in the Canyon (2018)
More of a Tribute, Less of a Story
Meh, eh, it was ok but it was more interested in being a tribute concert and something for Jakob Dylan to do to stay busy and relevant. Still, some great musicians performed (Beck, Norah, Cat Power) in the concert.
Watch the much better 2-part documentary Laurel Canyon for the real story.
Outer Range (2022)
Wasted Potential
What started out as a promising idea is not to be including some ridiculous scenes. The bank/singing/French kissing scene in the finale nearly made me barf and killed any hope of me watching season 2.
Presumably, this show is about time travel, but pales in comparison to the far more sophisticated and well-developed German show Dark.
So much for the Western sci-fi time travel genre.
Give me a real and gritty western like Deadwood.
Top of the Lake (2013)
Not Good at all
I rarely write reviews.
Season 1 is almost good - borderline 7
Season 2 is horrendous - borderline 0
Thus the 4 rating
Overall, a waste of time and some pathetic writing and acting all around.
And, I do like Elisabeth Moss but I hope even she realizes that this isn't her best work...by any measuring standard.
Under the Skin (2013)
Not the Book
While I enjoyed the sparseness of the movie and Scarlett Johansson's subtle and "silent" performance as she evolves, the artistic license the director/producer took left the story far removed from the book which I really, really liked. I would have preferred that it followed the novel closer. I guess it is an OK film for trying to the redo the story in a different way.
