The Fighter (2010)
It's an excellent movie
Its a few months that I didn't write a review about a movie-not that i'm a pro critic- but this film is such a good movie that made me write a few lines about it. In many ways, "The Fighter" is one of the best of the year, After seeing several boxing films over the years they all seem the same, I felt like I'm 6 again and rocky -my favorite movie of childhood- is playing. For a film like this it is very difficult to make it completely unpredictable, yet while "The Fighter" is in a way conventional, it is also unpredictable many times. David O. Russell brings a needed dose of realism to the boxing genre, downplaying the underdog nature of Micky's true story and focusing on the relationships that push him through and hold him back all throughout his journey toward the welterweight title. The cast is great but Bale certainly deserve best Academy award's supporting role. It's an excellent movie overall, not to be missed. Quite possibly one of the best boxing films ever made. And Bale's performance was one for the ages.
The Switch (2010)
A good feeling-good movie
I found this movie to be interesting in some ways. This is a sweet feeling-good movie and as a guy I'm not shy to say it, where people with good intentions have to face a couple of key mistakes and misgivings. It is enjoyable, smart, and quite human. The Cast did well, Jason Bateman is great but should be doing a lot more films. The little boy who plays Sebastian is a really good actor and I enjoy his acting, about Jeniffer Aniston I like her acting but I think she seems to play the same role in every film so it is time to see her playing something really different for a change. Everyone in the film is good and funny. It is simply there to amuse you and your date for a few hours, only to leave the theater and move on without pause.
Kynodontas (2009)
.What is going on in this movie? Don't expect any clear answers.
If you liked films like Dancer in the Dark, Funny Games or Dogville, then you will probably like it and it's definitely worth your time. This movie is so unexpected and has some weird sex scenes and also has some awful and out of the blue violence. it was a pain to watch and in the end left you wondering...What is going on in this movie? Don't expect any clear answers. "Dogtooth" is all about leaving interpretations up to you. In the other hand, It's mostly 90 minutes of really, really boring static camera angles and people talking nonsense, with very brief snippets of something vaguely violent or sexual. The idea of this movie was good and promising but like many other movies the ending went nowhere and was bad. "Dogtooth" nearly swept the inaugural edition of the Greek Film Academy's awards with victories in the categories of best film, director, screenplay and supporting actor. What is going on in Greek movies?! I don't think this movie deserve it!
The Invention of Lying (2009)
Imperfect, but perfectly delightful and provoking
The whole movie felt like a dream that you couldn't believe. What Mark Bellison was? A prophet? A liar? A regular simple man? A faithful man? A unbeliever? these question are fooling me around! In "The Invention of Lying" people was unable to lying, in a typical town, people have jobs, cars, houses and families but everyone tells the absolute truth! There's no such thing as deceit or flattery or fiction or Religion, people say exactly what they think and IT IS their nature. A man is able to lie, just one man and he's a good man. All of people are materialistic and substantial. But our "able to lie" man (Mark) is the only one that see things beyond surfaces and he become something like a prophet or foreteller talking about "A man in the sky" and he's not believe in what he says! OMG, What a complication!! I loved it. I think the plot had so many problems and could be much more precise, the beginning was not interesting than central premise of this film and the ending was so-so... All I can say is "Imperfect, but perfectly delightful and provoking"
Mou gaan dou (2002)
"Infernal Affairs" is like watching a chess game
What a twist! What a cast! What a conflict! It's no bang-bang flick, but a think-think movie. "Infernal Affairs" is like watching a chess game and rematch of a chess game with different outcomes. I can't discredit this movie for being an intelligent police story but don't expect an old school Chow Yun Fat action movie like I did. I recommend watching this movie as long as you take it for what it is. like a john Woo movie, but don't expect so well made like "Face Off". I found this movie to have a good thought out plot and message that can be at times hard to follow. Many of the actors were believable in their roles, I thin "The Departed" is a remake of this movie.
I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)
Don't fool your self thinking this will be a funny movie, It's a gay movie!
This film just makes an Ace Ventura double bill look intellectual!! I mean, really how does it feel to see gay sex scenes performed by two very capable A list actors? That was terrible. I think these two actors (Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor) just needed work, I was fool by the cover of the DVD, that shows a regular Jim Carrey smiling. Don't fool your self thinking this will be a funny movie, is not. Apart from that...nothing else...It wasn't well defined...was a comedy? drama? or just gay? I don't recommend this one. I couldn't finish watching it. When it comes to acting, Jim Carrey plays almost the same old goofy and weird man (but gay this time). Ewan McGregor, on the other hand, really does his job as a gay!! All in all, this movie is a good sign that Hollywood is in trouble. They are running out of ideas. Even their million-dollar money makers don't seem to help.
Get Him to the Greek (2010)
Pop Star or Rock Star!?
If you want to laugh and are a fan of Jonah Hill I would suggest seeing this movie, I like Jonah Hill and how he has such a subtle sense of humor. Jonah Hill really made me laugh when he smoked that amazing joint. Without Jonah Hill this movie would have fallen flat. A couple of years ago, Russell Brand was thrown off the BBC for being naughty on the radio, and pundits suggested his career was dead. Today, he's a Hollywood film star. What do pundits know? I think he's funny, but in some scenes he's acting like a fag! Not like a real rock star. I think the movie crew didn't know difference between POP STAR & ROCK STAR!! One would think "Get Him To The Greek" is a re-imagining of "My Favorite Year" ain't??
The American (2010)
not even worth to watch for free!
I was really excited as the trailer, and reviews, looked promising. But The movie was a disgrace, a waste of money, and total waste of time! Its really not even worth to watch for free! The story is an old story, with a known ending, when the movie finished in the end it keeps you frustrated and angry and to be frank you don't know how to react to the ending.. I can't believe the good reviews of this film. I go to a lot of movies and enjoy a lot of the slow, thoughtful well made movies that many people find boring. But this is not one of them! There is no script or story - you don't relate to the characters at all and the ending is so naive and predictable!!
Following (1998)
Just presents some interesting ideas
Inception, The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Batman Begins, Insomnia, Memento, these are the list of Christopher Nolan directing movies, and "following" is the debut and logical as a debut, but absolutely not even close to the other of his great career! This film presents some really interesting ideas and interesting story, but I didn't find it to be particularly well-ended. It was black and white, it was short and low budget, but from the middle of this movie I felt it is going to shakeup! and it did. The acting doesn't match the audacity of the script. The script doesn't stand up in a court of logic. The promise fails to fulfill the idea.
Animal Kingdom (2010)
Stunning, shocking , A film have to be seen
I really adore this movie. If you want to write a good tragedy, The family is one of the most important things that you must have in your mind, (just like Godfather I,II), family is the smallest unit of society, and in this movie, the unit called "kingdom", "Animal Kingdom" and how aptly named! Starring James Frecheville (as J) is so convincing, A vulnerable teenage boy inside a criminal family who have a vendetta with the local police. Guy Pearce and Weaver were great and unnerving! Beautifully shot, carefully crafted and takes total ownership of a very intense view of family and crime. Great long background musics... I already want to watch it again.
RED (2010)
Definitely definitely worth a look.
7/10 A group of retired CIA operatives, mixed with MI6 and KGB retirees who are all targets of a mass-assassination plot...ommmmmmm...How could it be? I have enjoyed myself and my family with it. It's have Bruce Willis' cool persona and look, A very lovely Morgan Freeman(73 years of age one of the greatest Hollywood Icons of all time), Funny John Malkovich (the scene that he had a Bomb and a big childish clock on his chest yelling, screaming and running) Helen Mirren (65 years of age and one of the literal "Queens" of Hollywood) and a good story and very very well directing and shooting. Brucie, we all understand. His last couple of action comedies have been disappointing though so a real return to form is most welcome, Hail to the King, Baby! You will get plenty of laughs with the action here, definitely definitely worth a look. Retired Extremely Dangerous ...
Deal (2008)
Good for a TV movie!
It feels like it would be more at home on the small screen rather than cinemas, There really isn't any suspense or tension. It tries, but never delivers. the movie's box office explain it all: the film cost $5 million to make, grossed less than $100,000 in theatrical release!! what a disaster, But I think "deal" was not that awful neither good, Had some good scenes like the scenes which take place at the poker table are very entertaining and well made. But if you don't like poker, you'll find this flick boring and the plot really stupid. The storyline was so predictable, I think a child could write that story! and got Burt Reynolds a Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actor!! HAHAHA thats tremendous, He's not deserving it!
Predators (2010)
Adrien Brody is a great actor but
2/10 I saw the original 1987 Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and kinda like it. I think you've nothing to gain by seeing this - even (after 23 years) with new material and effects. In the previews, a big deal is made about how this film is different but in the movie the differences are actually minimal and not worth a damn. The personalize of characters is so bad and simple, The film's plot is awful. I wont go into it, The cast is a funny joke!!! What the heck casting directors really felt? that replacing 80's action heroes with a bunch of razor-thins!! Adrien Brody is a great actor (The Pianist, Hollywoodland, Cadillac Records, The Village) but not a very convincing lead in this one. It's absolutely not his type, He's rough and stubborn but not an action hero! From this director (Nimród Antal) I watched Vacancy (2007) and Armored (2009) and I hated both, now it's 3!! But I didn't watched Control (2003) which I heard good things about. One of the producers is Robert Rodriguez...aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh What the hell is going wrong with u man? Machete and now this...hey give up..
Sweet Karma (2009)
Unwatchable
1-2/10 Despite a very sexy lead actress, This movie is worth nothing. I almost decided to turn off the player 3 or 4 times, but i watched it in fast forward and it was a waste of time! The shooting was like a telefilm, I thought it was a unprofessional or maybe an amateur movie!!! Then I found "sweet karma" made by Anchor Bay (who made cheap but pro movies) supposedly inspired by true reports of human trafficking rings operating out of Toronto! Anywaw, Very poor fight sequences, brutal revenges, so solid and simple characters, Nonelogical history and etc......we have to remember, It was first Andrew Thomas Hunt directing but not promising really!
Eat Pray Love (2010)
Again a boring and disgusting romantic comedy from Julia Roberts
3/10 Again a boring and disgusting romantic comedy from Julia Roberts, Out of the blue she find out she's not happy with her marriage life. OK some might say its a movie for women, But I think its not worth wasting ur time, 133 minutes for a meaningless Julia Robert's movie. "Eat Pray Love" is shameless wish-fulfillment, the story is not that enjoyable because the dialog isn't meaningful and the character of Liz is selfish and me me me. I didn't expect much from this movie, but certainly something more, at least not so much clichè, and lack of substance. The suddenly dissatisfied married woman who decides to take on a journey, to discover herself, God, happiness... and finally the man of his dreams n the end of her soooooooo loooooooooooong(?!) world trip I have to say it: A Self-Absorbed meaningless Romance Failure..
Jonah Hex (2010)
Quietb-1 commented well on this movie: "A western with a twist or a twisted western?, "
Musix, some effects, some shoot out scenes were fine and powerful, but thats it...nothing more. the script sometimes gets lost in some confusing fight scenes. Jonah hex's persona was so irresistible and hard that could kill 8 men in just a blink of eyes, But when he faces the wretched "Burke" become weak. Why? Maybe the persona of "Burke" had no attendance of righter and director!! Quietb-1 commented well on this movie: "A western with a twist or a twisted western?, " thx dude Jimmy Hayward, maybe great on animations like "Horton Hears a Who! (Directing-LOVE IT!)" or "Finding Nemo (animator)" or "Toy Story 1&2 (animator)" but not good in real movies yet.
State of Play (2009)
If you like mysterious thriller you will surely like it!
The beginning was so fast and powerful that U didn't realize that this movie haven't the begin credits! If you like mysterious thriller you will surely like it! the U turn of ending is so unpredictable... But I think the storyline had some problems in the middle of it, and it was a little tediously lengthy. Kevin Macdonald directed 17 movies. "The Last King of Scotland (2006)", Again a thriller and also a Historic drama, Just like "state of play". Another is "The Eagle (2010)", I didn't watched it. But all the other 14 movies are documentaries (TV's, short videos). But the none-documentary movies are documentaries in some kinda ways and its not bad. Somewhat entertaining movies and yet eminently State of Play is worth a look. Just do not expect that good a time.
