Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983)
I still want to be a spy...
As I read so many of the user comments, I thought it amusing and funny that it sounds this show reached an unexpected audience. I was really young when my mom would record the show while she was at work, come home really late, and play the tape for us. While other little kids were playing Transformers and Barbies, I was playing as if I were a divorced housewife with two kids who suddenly becomes a spy.
The show has at its core the concept that made shows like "Buffy" popular. They take ordinary average everyday girls, the girls and women who get overlooked, and they made them superheroes with "falable knights on white horses" or as in the case of "Scarecrow and Mrs.King" a really neat silver car.
Yeah, so it is a little cheesy and predictable but I think today, when everything is so not cheesy and predictable it's nice to pop in an old tape of "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" episodes and watch and be reminded that sometimes happy ever after does exist.
13 Going on 30 (2004)
Gotta lot of 'heart' but not the 'soul' of "BIG"
I am a true fan of "Big", the classic starring Tom Hanks, and that awesome floor keyboard that every kid who saw that movie wanted. Tom Hanks brought to the screen a character full of heart and soul. It was not simply about regrets and not liking who you've become but it was about never losing that 'inner-child' or how maybe growing-up shouldn't mean becoming a type-A-uptight-die-at-35-from-heart-disease-jerk. (*Also, side note, Tom became big overnight he did not skip like 15 years or such.)
What "13 Going On 30" has is a lot of heart. Jennifer Garner is believeable and "reachable" as Jenna Rink, the 13 year old who woke-up in her 30's. It's more "Christmas Carol" than "Big". Jenna wakes up to realize she does not like the girl she has become and that in her child-like eyes, she has the gift of seeing what the future holds if she does not change her wanna-be ways. This movie is drenched in romance, prat falls, and dastardly villians that would do the Evil Wicked Witch of the West justice. It's...cute. It's a chick flick. Plain and simple. There is nothing wrong with chick flicks. God knows, if they didn't exist the female population would all be spinsters because there would be no catharsis available for our Disney-Grimm-Brothers-Fairy-Tale-Happy-Ever-After emotions. So here's to chick flicks and this one, in particular. No, it's not "Big." "Big" is the movie you watch when you feel old and pathetic and dragged down by the "man." You will recapture your heart and soul in "Big." "13 Going on 30" is the movie you watch when your feeling
Prince-Charming-Isn't-Real-And-Oh-My-God-Did-I-Really-Memorize-All-The-Moves -To-Thriller. Heart and soul...
