2016: Obama's America (2012)
Why D'Souza won't vote for Obama.
At first I was going to address the numerous factual errors in this film, but considering the limitation on words one can use in a review I decided my words would be better spent on the product as a whole.
If you like documentaries this one fails to make the grade. Though it does attempt to present itself as fact seeking, you find yourself circling the same "drain" for the entire movie.
D'Souza seems to try to present himself as one seeking facts, but fails to accomplish this and by the end of the film I found myself frustrated for sitting through the whole thing. A film made up of poor sound mixing and bad editing that seems to expect folks to know who the hell Dinesh D'Souza is. I now know he isn't worth the price of his works.
In the attempts to sound credible there were interviews with people who "knew" Obama. D'Souza might as well have interviewed me, since I know how to spell Obama as well. Though, one can't claim to have any insight on a person just because they might have met once or has the same last name.
Yes, low information voters may flock to this film and even claim it is better than it really is, but only those with low expectations of anything will find it worth seeing more than once. For me, once was too much.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
OK, folks start your timers
I didn't expect much and though I was surprised in some regards I was highly disappointed in others. I'll first say that I don't mind reboots if they add more to the story, but seriously, over half the film dedicated to how PP becomes Spidey, really? Overall I think the acting, directing, and cinematography were all well done. I blame the screen play on this one being bad, and for those that claim it sticks more to Comic than Sam Raimi's versions I can only ask "what are you smoking?" Yes, PP is bitten by a spider and No, there aren't glands that he makes webs with. But that is about as close to the Comic as it really gets. If one were to compare Webb's vision to Raimi's as to which one is closer to the comic, I think fans would pick Raimi's, though I have my misgivings about his vision as well.
It was nice seeing Sally Fields in the film, and though I felt she may have appeared to young for the role, she came across as I expected the character to. Denis Leary and Emma Stone make a nice Father/Daughter combination, Andrew Garfield makes a believable replacement for Tobey Maguire, and Martin Sheen made a nice Uncle Ben.
If I wasn't so bored with the rehash of Spidey's beginnings this film could have really been something to watch, as it is, save your money or go watch the Avengers. But if you really want to see it, wait about an hour after it starts before checking it out, trust me you won't miss anything we haven't already seen.
The Heroes of Desert Storm (1991)
Found memories from a bad event.
As bad as I feel this film was, it will always be considered special (to me) for the time spent with fellow Marines and Sailors who served as extras with me on location in 29 Palms (California).
The film clearly was trying to establish issues that needed to be overcome by the "Heroes" yet it seemed to lose focus while establishing the characters. Perhaps it was the hurried production (and low budget) that could be the blame for the lackluster result.
Regardless of how one feels about this film, it should be remembered that many events (and some actual scenes) came from the real Desert Storm along with a number of the extras who were also "Heroes" of the war.
