Desperate Housewives (2004)
Over the top drama, but still entertaining
This show used to entertain me - when I was about 17. Now that I'm 22 I realise how awful it is. I am in the middle of season 6, I haven't watched the finale yet, but once I have, I don't think I'll be repeating episodes any more. I'm even thinking about selling the three seasons I have. I don't really have any idea where to start with this, but I guess I'll start with the sexism and untruthful depictions of couples. Even the normal couples like Lynette and Tom have to go to couple's therapy for absolutely no reason, the writers have nothing to fall back on but drama, so instead of allowing the characters to just talk to each other, they have to go to therapy to sort out their problems. Many of the situations that appear in this show are so bizarre they would very rarely happen in real life - for instance - after Karl dies in season 6, Bree brings Orson back into her home because he is in a wheelchair, (she feels guilty for cheating on him) and for some reason Orson turns from the sweet guy who 'saved' her in the earlier seasons, to being a complete conniving ass hole. When would that really happen in real life? The show is full of pretty people, pretty houses and it's kept alive by over the top story lines. When I was a teenager watching this I actually became really nervous and insecure about my life and why I wasn't perfect or why wasn't my boyfriend doing this and that for me. When I stopped watching I realised that it makes you insecure about certain aspects in your life or relationships. I think it's unhealthy to project such things to women. To make women feel that they need to be perfect all the time. After watching this I honestly feel that each and every one of the characters are slightly insane in their own way. I mean, I get that you can have problems in your life, and sometimes you can get weird and do strange things, but this is just awful. Most of the situations could easily be remedied if only the characters would actually just talk to each other, but that would make the show 'boring' now wouldn't it?
Right now I'm watching an episode where Susan finds out that her kid could be slow and she's freaking out about it...why? There is a scene where she is talking to Mike outside about it, looks through the window, and sees MJ trying to get his hand unstuck from inside a glass. They both start worrying way too much and then are way too relieved when they see him take it off. There is also a stupid rivalry between Gaby and Susan because they both think their kid is bright, but then find out they could be slow. WHO CARES? Does it really matter that a child who is 7 years old isn't showing as much progress as the other kids? Just be a proud mother! These are the kinds of things that make me think if I was still in the same mindset I was when I was 17, would I be worried about these pointless things? Would I let it get to me? What an unhealthy to portray 'real life'. Don't worry though because at the end of the episode you find out why the housewives are being so spazzy and over the top about everything, emotional music starts playing, and the character talks about how something sad happened in their past and THIS is why they need to do the things they're doing. It's okay, it's justified. That was sarcasm by the way. The characters are smug, selfish, and stupid. That's all you need to know about the show. I mean, I'm not saying it isn't watchable, it is pretty entertaining, but take it with a pinch of salt.
Alien³ (1992)
Meh, it was alright.
This is my first time watching the second and third movies, and only watching the first movie twice, I'm obviously not a die-hard super fan like others reviewing this movie.
I quite liked it, the acting was pretty good, the concept was good. It was pretty slow paced with a few exciting scenes mixed in every so often. One thing that really annoyed me about it was the actual Alien itself. It looked just terrible, the first movie got it right so I don't see why they felt the need to add a CGI one in instead.
Also, Hicks and Newt - for Ripley to do all of that at the end of Aliens and then just have them die right at the start of Alien 3, well it was annoying, but I also understood that it pretty much could have ended up being Aliens all over again if the writers had kept them alive, I don't really see how they would have survived or fit in with the story.
I'm no expert on these movies, but I'm still going to say that Alien is the better out of the three.
New Girl (2011)
Maybe it's because I'm British...
You would think this would be perfect for me - I'm a 21 year old girl who LOVES random crap - but this show just... sucks. Zoey is proving yet again that she can't act, she plays the same 'ditzy, cute random girl' in every movie. She does things in this that infuriate me. A lot of people out there are going to watch this and think OMGZZ SHE'S SOOOO FUNNY AND RANDOM!!! I even grimaced at some of the things she does. She tries to make her character funny by singing at random times and quoting 'nerdy' movie lines. It doesn't come off as funny though, it comes off as WOW you're trying too hard to be random.
The only character I like in the whole series so far is Winston. He actually made me laugh out loud and definitely made me smile. I guess he's the one who's keeping me watching this crap attempt at comedy. Don't like it if you dislike Zoey - you'll hate her even more.
Sucker Punch (2011)
People are confusing it for a guy movie when it's aimed more at girls.
I'm a 21 year old insecure girl and when I started watching this, sure, I was a bit tired of seeing hot girls with guns in a movie yet again. But this movie is much more than that. I've seen a lot of the males who hated this movie in their reviews complain that it's just a stupid CGI movie with hot chicks in it and it has no depth, well I disagree.
Just like with Catwoman (Halle Berry), I honestly think that this movie is aimed at girls more than guys. It's more of a 'girl power' movie, than a 'omglookguizsnakedgirls!!' movie. There is no nudity in this film, when Emily Browning's skirt comes up while she's fighting you can clearly see she's wearing tennis pants, the only thing on show are stomachs, legs, and maybe two characters show some cleavage.
The movie is also not a ripoff of Inception, like someone stupidly said, because Inception has copied off of others. Nothing is original now, so what do you expect? I really enjoyed the CGI effects (especially the 'knife' mission) and I thought the acting was really good. Vanessa Hudgens was a little disappointing but she did have a pretty small role anyway.
I think people need to stop paying attention to the ratings on IMDb... because most of the time you're going to be let down. Just watch the movie, and if you like it, you like it. You can't have an opinion on something just because it has a low or high score for goodness.
X: First Class (2011)
Stupidly bad.
I haven't read the comics (though I plan to) but I have watched all movies and enjoyed all of them. I was so looking forward to watching this movie, one of my friends who is a movie buff loved it a lot and understandably I wanted to see it as soon as I could.
I wish I hadn't wasted those two hours of my life. The whole movie feels like a Bond film, just like a lot of other people here have said. There's the classic Bond villain who wants to kill everyone without an actual explanation, his blonde sidekick who does everything he tells her to and looks like a Bond girl. The submarine with the hidden room is horribly Bond-like too. I can understand why Magneto wants to kill Shaw so much, anyone would want revenge, but this movie is just stupid. The movie cuts from Magneto being 12 years old in the war to 30 years old. What happened all that time? Was he just getting high, and steadily angrier about his mother's death? Also, I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but why did Magneto have to keep changing from English to American to German, and then randomly at the end, IRISH? I HATED the way Mystique just left her best friend who has loved her and cared for her most of her life, with a bullet in his spine, to go off and have adventures with Magneto. Just because you get bullied for being a 'freak' doesn't mean you leave your best friend on the floor potentially dying. It just goes to show how much the director of this film doesn't 'get' the X-Men story. The women in this film are all exploited as sexual animals, constantly in underwear or tight fitting clothes or short skirts. They all have to look perfect. I also didn't appreciate the comment one of the FBI men say at the end after the female FBI agent tells them about Xavier's kiss. He says 'This is why women shouldn't be allowed in the FBI' or something like that.
I hated the whole film, I truly feel like I've wasted 2 hours of my life. If you like this movie, you're an idiot. Simple as. It wasn't even boring, it's just that it was so bad that I wanted to throw my laptop at the wall. Download it for free if you're going to watch this crap.
Beastly (2011)
Harsh critics
I decided to read the book when the trailer for this movie was released, and really enjoyed it. I have now finished watching the movie and I can see why some die hard fans of the book are upset, because it does steer away from the book quite a bit. I especially loved Neil Patrick Harris' portray of Will, he was really funny and charming to watch and genuinely made me smile. I must admit that as soon as I saw Mary Kate Olsen was in the movie, I had to watch it mainly for that, and I wasn't disappointed with her role as Kendra, I was pleasantly surprised with her acting as the character.
The movie is based loosely on the novel, so most people who are saying this is a load of crap are pretty much just upset that this movie wasn't word for word of the book.
The ending was sweet, a bit abrupt, but heartwarming.
GIVE IT A CHANCE.
New York Minute (2004)
Really not as bad as everyone is saying
Most people are giving this movie such a bad rating, when it really isn't that bad at all. What were they expecting, an Oscar worthy movie? The movie only has two annoyances for me, and it's the guy from American Pie (can't remember the actor's name) because his acting in this is, quite frankly, terrible. The character is already awful so I don't think they could have picked anyone worse for the role, but his nasally whiny voice is very annoying. Also the limo-driver/planner stealer. The acting is incredibly bad.
Sure, this movie is full of cheesy jokes and way too much running, but it's the whole point of the movie. I also think both of the Olsen's acting (Marykate's acting is slightly better) is much better in this film than say, Holiday in the Sun. The scene where they finally confront each other about not being there for each other is actually quite touching, and definitely made me sad.
Men should just steer clear of this movie, even if their girlfriend's ask them to watch it, because you're going to be bored (well, maybe not on the towel scene XD) but I think most girls will quite like it, for the Olsen's gorgeous freaking hair, their clothes and makeup, and just to see them act in something when they were more mature.
I would recommend to either download it or rent it. If you find it in a sale for £3 that's good too, but definitely don't pay over £7 for this movie, because you might regret it.
