Work in Progress: 180 Almonds (2019)
Funny, Quirky, Lesbians!
I found this show to be engaging, funny, interesting, poignant & hilarious all at the same time. Abby McEnany is so relatable as a 40-something lesbian trying to fit in a world where young, pretty (& skinny) rule. I was in love with her character from the start, cringing along with her when apropos and laughing my arse off when necessary. I cannot wait to see more of this show!
The Void (2016)
Very Lovecraftian
I heard a lot of good things about this flick and really looked forward to it after seeing the trailers. I was almost discouraged to see it after seeing such a low rating on here but I'm, really glad I stuck it through. This is not your average run of the mill psycho-killers-in-a-hospital movie. And if you've never read H.P. Lovecraft, you may have a hard time jumping onto the ride. But if you're adventurous and like the weird, you'll love this. Some of the gore is not for the squeamish but it is not over gratuitous either. AND if you're a Lovecraft fan, you're gonna love this movie! **SPOILER** --Look for subtle tentacle appearances, debilitating madness and Non-Euclidean geometry Easter Eggs.
Scarecrow (2013)
Seasonal Fun for TV Movie Horror
This was typical fare of something evil lurks and teenagers are on the menu. But with realistic gore and terror scenes, frightened actors and creepy settings, it's at least an enjoyable seasonal movie for Halloween, (it was aired on the Sy-Fy channel in October) and for TV movie horror fans alike. Mild enough to air on TV, it is fairly safe for younger teens and pre-teens, but engaging enough for the adults to watch, too. The monster was interesting yet vaguely familiar (think Jeepers Creepers) and yet kept me intrigued for the entirety of the story. Some twists and turns helped move the story along, despite the predictable characters and storyline. Overall, not bad. Not wonderful, but not bad.
Odd Folks Home (2012)
Collections of the bizarre!
If you like the obscure, the bizarre or the weird, you'll love this show! I enjoy it for precisely those reasons and for the seemingly limitless interesting people that inhabit our world and the things that turn them on. Taxidermy artists, bone collectors, baby head candle makers, steampunkers, they're all here, and fascinating. Sure, some of these folks are really out there, but I like that. And I like that they know they are and are willing to share their weirdness with the world. AND that someone actually thought it would make a good TV series, because it does! I have seen several episodes and have not become bored yet. I highly recommend Odd Folks Home!
I Sell the Dead (2008)
Absolutely Hysterical Macabre Fun
If you're looking for scary horror or stomach turning gore, you've got the wrong movie. If you're looking for macabre humor, this is it! Tongue in cheek jokes, totally camp moments in graveyards and all sorts of devilish ghouls and the like to interest the twisted at heart. I gave this movie 10 stars to make up for the morons who don't get it. If you smile and laugh when you read Lovecraft over and over again, this is the film for you. The actors are a-one, the plot interesting and somewhat fresh and the scenery, costuming and live settings give the viewer a sense of "being there". The score is lively and really sets the tone. OK, I loved it, but I am particularly fussy when it comes to the horror genre and I want my mind entertained as well as my eyes. I Sell the Dead really brings it all together.
