Clannad (2007–2009)
9/10
One of the best I've ever seen.
31 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
My emotions!!! Ugh. I love this series. The first series of Clannad was lovely. It was an emotional manipulator as well, but there were more happy than sad moments. I was particularly fond of Fuko's story in part one and enjoyed the fact that we got to delve into a good deal of the characters' lives. So now in After Story, we are treated to the same thing in the first half of the series. There are a lot of laughs (which are welcome if you are aware of what comes in the latter episodes). In this series, I especially liked Misae's story arc. It's heartbreaking, but also much needed to give you a bit of information on the Illusionary World. All is happy and very enjoyable until you get to episode 16. I was lucky enough not to have had this spoiled for me and man, was it sad. I was in tears from 16-22 and taking breaks in between so I could deal with what would come next. Nagisa's passing and the emotion from her family was so heartbreaking. Ushio And Tomoya's relationship was also very well done and I loved the incorporation of Fuko during the somberness. After the first death however, I didn't think we would get another two! I was all tears in episode 21 and the beginning of 22, but the brilliance of Clannad is the ending. The tie to the Illusionary World, the orbs(lights), the relevance of the city and Akio's revelation earlier about wishing for Nagisa to live, and Tomoya's second chance....it was as perfect as it could get. I also loved the tail end with Fuko. The extra episodes were cool and a great tie in to the game. So now that I've gushed over the story, I'll get into the technical stuff. I found the animation to be some of the most gorgeous live seen. The scenery in the different worlds was exquisite and the characters were beautiful. I mean beautifully drawn, and beautifully portrayed. The voice acting was also brilliant and brought to life some of the best personalities I've seen. Akio and Sanae were hilarious as always, along with Sunohara and Fuko. I don't really have a favorite character because I love them all so much, but Nagisa and Tomoya's characters were so well done. They brought this series to life and made the emotional journey better than almost any. The music was perfection. I love love love the Dango song and the score was perfectly placed. i don't really know what else to say... Overall, it's in my top 5. I enjoyed every minute and, though its sad during, it's ultimately happy at the end, tying up loose ends with ease, and making the viewer feel content with their journey. 10/10. Amazing. Watched subbed.

A Masterpiece...
12 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Some Spoilers Ensue - Though not right away. I will begin by telling you that this film is a period piece. It is set in the late 1700's and tells the factual story of King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), his wife Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander), and the King's physician Johann Fredrich Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen). It starts out with a letter. Written as the film unfolds, this letter is addressed to Caroline's children and weaves throughout the story of a sad woman married to a demeaning King, who meets a German man of The Enlightenment with a vision to change Denmark. Along the way, beautiful and wretched things happen leading to an ultimately heart breaking ending for all characters involved.

Mads Movie #3 - And so far my favorite, this film is so very good. The acting by all three of these brilliant people is divine and I can see why this movie was awarded so much. It was nominated for tons of awards including the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. My emotions were on fire the entire time. One minute I was happy, the next I was sad, the next I was terrified and so on...it was an experience to be remembered that's for sure. I am usually not a huge fan of period pieces, however certain ones get to me if the story is well done and it has a meaning or message other than: 'Cute romance ensues between rich people with big gowns and no real problems'. As far as that genre goes, this in in my top 5.

Best Scenes - 1. Anything between King Christian (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) and Struensee (M.M.) is just so amazing to watch. The chemistry between the two and the way Christian feels about Struensee...there is kinship there. Even as Johann is using Christian, you feel he cares about him. 2. The first kiss between Caroline and Johann and then some...sorry, it's hot. 3. I pretty much just enjoyed the entire film actually. 4. The best and most heart breaking of all...

The Ending - Oh My God. I haven't seen an ending (or acting) like that since The Crucible in which Daniel Day Lewis (who I should also movie stream)gave me the chills with his speech "LEAVE ME MY NAME!" I was just hoping so hard that it wasn't going to end the way I thought it would, but I wound up sadly, being right. And I cried. I cried and cried as the carriage rode up...more as Johann walked through the hoard of people just waiting for his execution, up the bloody stairs, through the beheading and until Caroline herself found out. Everything about this scene was perfection.

Best Lines - 1. Johann Friedrich Struensee: "I think some people are so sealed inside their fate that they hide deep within their mind." 2. Queen Caroline Mathilda: "You recognized me." Johann Friedrich Struensee: "I would recognize you blind folded." 3. Johann Friedrich Struensee: "Who is more disturbed? The king or someone who thinks the Earth was created in six days?" 4. Johann Friedrich Struensee: "I am one of you."

Overall - I've talked up M.M the whole time, however I should say something about Mikkel Boe Følsgaard (King Christian VII), his portrayal was magnificent. I don't think the gorgeous dynamic would have been there had there been another actor. His role of this lonely man who was childlike and at one moment, torn between hot and cold was spot on. His love and need for Struensee was hard to watch as you could just feel his longing for a friend, a mentor, a father, and the scene at the very end after the execution when he was sitting with the Court...so vacant...I was just in awe. I was so pleased with this film (If you can't tell). It was a gripping and brutal experience which landed on a spark of hope instead of the bleak outcome I expected. I recommend it totally.

Verdict - 10/10 Stars. Masterpiece. You can read all my reviews at http://dianalynn5287.blogspot.com/

Gorgeous and Thoughtprovoking Art Piece
11 August 2013
On To Number 2 - Continuing with my Mads movie streak, I stumbled upon this strong willed, cinematically beautiful, yet confusing art-house number directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (of Bronson fame, and of Drive fame here in the states). I made it a point, as I have with all others in this so called 'Streak" (I should call this something....um...whatever, we'll say M.M.S. - Mads Movie Streak) to go in blind. I would rather know nothing especially when said film deals with religion so as to not skew my opinion. Having said all that, though this film is definitely gorgeous to watch, it left me feeling a bit bewildered by the end.

But You Know The Acting Will Be Great - And it totally is...all of the actors in this film are fantastic to watch. I was especially fond of The Boy who was played wonderfully by newcomer Maarten Stevenson. However, again, the whole movie is carried by a completely silent and extremely, engagingly, thoughtful performance by M.M. If for no other reason, watch it for that...

And The Cinematography - There is some gore and a lot of exquisite scenery that also bring this slow film to light. In the wake of a back story that unfolds unlike other films, I would say the creme de la creme is the cinematography. The colors are vivid, the dream sequences (if you will) are filmed across beautiful landscapes, there's an abundance of religious and mythological symbolism, and the violence is wholly stylized.

Best Scenes - 1. The beginning before the escape. 2. The escape. 3. Any and everything after the boat ride with the Vikings.

Yes Vikings - As with The Hunt, I don't want to give a lot away. I let on, that this is a religious film, but I will also state that it takes place in 1000 A.D. and M.M. is a super-warrior who was captured and escaped (what I think were) crusaders. His journey thereafter is one to fill the audience with philosophical questions. What is the meaning of life? Why are we living? Is there an afterlife? And so on...

Overall - The ending is a confusing one (at least it was a bit for me). Reflecting back on the watch however, forced me to think it through more thoroughly and in that process, I've managed to draw up new conclusions which ultimately make the movie a more fulfilling one. I mean, it's art...it's open for interpretation and it is sometimes admired without a full realization of exactly what the artist was trying to ultimately say. And that dear friends, is reason enough for me to appreciate it.

The Hunt (2012)
10/10
Wow.
7 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A Little History - I have a wide range of actors that I love. Most of the time, I like to backtrack through a couple of their previous films when I like them a lot, and then I just get on with it. Not the case here. I decided to start watching Hannibal about 6 months after it aired and I got my first good look at a spectacular Danish actor named Mads Mikkelsen. He is extremely talented but, judging by the fact that I love horror films, have seen Silence Of The Lambs numerous times, and figured the television show could never match the talents of the wonderful Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, I wrote it off. Until about three episodes in when this God of Danish cinema showed off his talents. After the show, and because I adore foreign cinema, I decided to binge on every single one of his movies. That my friends, is how I came across The Hunt.

The Basics - So after giving you the background of what I've been doing for the past couple of months, this is the first of many Mads movies I chose. I have some background with Danish cinema and am an avid Von Trier fan so I know Danish films have amazing potential. The movie stars M.M. as a single father named Lucas who leads a lonely life teaching primary school and striving for custody of his son. He has a likable group of friends including his best friend Theo, who has a wife and child Lucas is close with as well. Everything is going smooth until one day, a small lie changes the course of Lucas's life.

It Would Probably Be Better - For you to go in blind as I did...just beware, this is a tough number to swallow. It is unrelenting and uncomfortable, however, don't let that scare you away...you should see it, everyone should see it.

Mad For Mads - My God is he exquisite in his craft...he practically carries the entire film and does so with a passion not many actors have. This film bumped him into my 'favorites' for sure. You can just feel every thought, every ounce of pain and turmoil he is going through...it's harrowing and heartbreaking and I was crying at the end.

Best Scenes - 1. The scene in the convenience store is amazing. You are rooting for Lucas the entire time. 2. The scene when you realize that though everyone is against him...he still has a couple of people on his side. 3. The scene in the church (which if you've seen the trailer, you get a small glimpse of) took my breath away and had me wiping tears.

Overall - This movie is a tough watch, but rewarding nonetheless due to its well told story and outstanding acting. It was the first of many Mads movies I've played - also the first of many that had me crying - and a firm step back into the world of heart wrenching Danish cinema. I strongly recommend the watch.

Verdict - 10/10 Stars. You can view all of my reviews at http://dianalynn5287.blogspot.com/

Breaking into the Anime Genre
27 May 2013
My first series ever. I've seen plenty movies, but this was my first television piece...and it was an absolutely gorgeous piece of art. I am so embarrassed to say I haven't read the manga yet, but the show is lovely. I was emotionally invested in the characters and loved the way the story unfolded over these 13 episodes. Yes, the story is slightly repetitive towards the end and there is a little confusion here and there, but it was well thought out and strong. I had no problem with the nudity and the violence was awesome and added to the overall story. I watched it subtitled and then in English(Netflix) and both were OK, but I usually go with the subs. The acting is better and it's the way it was supposed to be heard anyway. Overall, beautiful as I said, and I will remember the ending for a long time. This is probably the saddest I've seen yet so bravo for giving me a bit of a cry. 10/10

Disappointed Reader...
4 April 2012
DISAPPOINTING. I've read this book. It is brilliant. Everything about the book is charming and sad and uplifing and poetic which is what I wanted out of the film experience. Maybe if I hadn't read it, I would have liked the film more, but so much was left out or changed. Thomas Horn did do well and the acting was very good. When the movie followed the bookline, it was very good, but then it strayed from the main points of the story and added new things which didn't fit. I think that's why the movie felt uneven.I want to see a different version of this film which actually follows the story. Till then, my opinion is read the book, toss the film.

Never Let Me Go...
13 February 2012
I had just finished the book and within hours, had decided to watch this movie. As it started to go through the first half, I was a little let down with the development of characters and the fact that so much of this amazing book was not put into the movie. They could have taken a little more time to give you some insight into these characters' lives. By the end I was crying my little eyes out, just as I had in the book. Though the movie is leaps and bounds away from being as good as the novel, it's nice to put pictures to words, especially when these actors are so brilliant in their work. My opinion, read the book first so you understand the characters, then if you'd like, watch the movie.

Sad Movie (2005)

Sad Movie
12 February 2012
As the title states, you will be sad by the end, and probably cry your little eyes out like I did. But the difference between this movie and any other weepy chick flick out there is that you feel for these characters...you root for them. The movie plays like a comedy drama for the first 2/3 which almost makes you forget the movie is indeed titled "Sad Movie" It is one of the most heartbreaking, wonderful movies I've seen in awhile, even if it is a little over the top. And I mean come on, if you are going to choose to watch a movie with this title, you know you want to cry...and this one will give you what you want...10/10 stars.

Just stop reading...
29 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
AND WATCH the film before you spoil anymore for yourself! You're welcome =)

Now can I just say how that was the most awesome thing I've seen in awhile? I went into it knowing nothing and at the end was feeling some weird blend of shock/laughter for that crazy ending. 10 points to Nash Edgerton for making a 9 minute short that has more feeling in it (and feelings that come out of watching it) than some recent 90 minute-ers I've seen....Bravo.

And P.S. Spiders are creeeepppppyyyyy, so don't put fake ones around in the car for some gal to find...and freak out...and get into a situation because of. Kthx.

Look At It With An Open Mind...
16 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie on one of those "I'll stay up late and browse Netflix for a semi creepy horror film" nights and I gotta say, I was surprisingly happy with this choice. I guess this film is pretty much love it or hate it based on the reviews on here. You are either going to like the slow character driven plot, and sly art-house ending, or you aren't. I was extremely happy to see some really well done acting and character development in this one. Plus, as everyone else has also stated, the atmosphere and eerie music make this movie have a vibe to it that brings it alive. As far as the ending goes, I have looked through many theories that deal with the sort of "Mystery Spot/Area" the characters are trapped in and I just gotta say, once you delve into a sort of analysis, you may be surprised at what you think/read. Overall, spot on acting, great atmosphere, creeped me out, and had me thinking for awhile after it ended. Just what a good little Indy movie should do.

Kicking myself...
14 March 2011
So I am:

Totally kicking myself for watching this right before bed. I'm so scared, but it was absolutely worth watching. I am normally a boss when it comes to scary movies, however this particular movie has some twists and turns that make you think about it for hours after. It starts out slow and steady letting you in on the back story of the family and what has happened. The whole film is shot documentary style with interviews etc.(and let me just say, that if I didn't know this movie was a "mock" horror or whatever you call it, I would have been pet-ri-fied) haha.

I was a little iffy:

After the first major twist (if you will), but I promise, keep watching because the end is worth the wait. I feel like I want to tell people all about this underrated movie and how it made me feel right now, but it's late so I'll wait and just tell all you movie people who read reviews to just go watch it, in the dark. Don't be a pansy.

Overall:

One of the best I've seen recently...it's hard to come by good horror especially ghost stories, but this one was actually pretty good. I like when I come across something unexpected. 8.5/10 Stars.

Nothing Like I Thought It Would Be...
12 March 2011
Basic Premise:

So there's these three siblings (one boy and two girls) who are in there late teens/early 20's and they live in this huge estate out i the country miles away from the real world. They are home schooled and their parents are so deluded and scared for their kids that, among other things, they even teach them the wrong words for the wrong items...ex. Chair = Sea. That's all I'm going to tell you about the story, but that's not all I have to say.

This Movie is Something:

I've never seen anything like it. This is a Greek film with a bunch of (brave) no-name actors who straight up killed their performances...but that's not all that makes this film great. The whole moral (If you will) is to show us as humans, what happens if you don't let natural curiosity run free. The parents in this film are protective to the extreme. There really needs to be someone to say something about the damage this can do to kids, and now finally, this film has the balls to do it.

Best Scenes:

1. The scene with the cat.

2. The scene where the eldest comes across some real films.

3. The scene where the dad goes to Christina's.

4. The end scene.

Beware: This film has strong explicit contact and some of it deals with topics that are taboo, so if you have the stomach for it, get ready.

Overall: Great film. I love the cinematography and the acting was spectacular. I was interested and disturbed and sad and I don't know what else...what I do know, is this is a film you'll be talking about

8.7/10.

You Always Hurt, The Ones You Love...
21 January 2011
What a film this was. The story spans over some year and is about a man and wife with marital problems. I don't really want to tell you anything more...just watch it. I just finished, and they said this film stings...boy does it. The acting, first off, is exquisite. The back and forth from past to present was perfectly placed throughout the film and the overall outcome is so heart-wrenching, it feels like you've been punched in the stomach. Awards season, here this film comes...

And The Soundtrack? I want it.....soooooo bad. Whoever did the music deserves a medal.

Best Scenes: 1. The part where Ryan Gosling sings "You Always Hurt The Ones You Love" 2. The rest...

Excuse Me Michelle... Michelle Williams seems to always play the role of a grieving wife/widow/cancer patient(Dawson's Creek) so maybe that's why she has this role down to a tee. It's not an insult, it's a compliment....or just an observation. I don't think I've ever seen her in a happy comedy role so maybe a future project...no, nevermind.

Best Lines: 1. Dean: "In my experience, the prettier a girl is, the more nuts she is, which makes you insane." Cindy: "I like how you can compliment and insult somebody at the same time, in equal measure." 2. Dean: "I feel like men are more romantic than women. When we get married we marry, like, one girl, 'cause we're resistant the whole way until we meet one girl and we think I'd be an idiot if I didn't marry this girl she's so great. But it seems like girls get to a place where they just kinda pick the best option... 'Oh he's got a good job.' I mean they spend their whole life looking for Prince Charming and then they marry the guy who's got a good job and is gonna stick around."

Overall: A wonderful and heartbreaking love story with spot on acting, singing, cinematography, directing and writing. It's so powerful, it out-shines most films I've seen this year and it's definitely going down as one of my favorites.

9.5 Stars. Read all my movie reviews at http://dianalynn5287.blogspot.com/

Talk About Claustrophobia...
17 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
OK so this movie is about a truck driver named Paul Conroy (the wonderful Ryan Reynolds), who is working in Iraq when his group of workers (who are actually trying to help over there) get blown up by "terrorists". He wakes up buried in a box with a lighter, knife, flashlight, some glow sticks, and a Backberry. The entire film takes place in actual time. Also the entire film takes place in the box so if you are claustrophobic, do yourself a favor and rent something else.

Unlike Other Movies Right Now: This film takes place in actual time (like 24). I thought it was soooo well done and oh! beware of the crazy twist ending...gave me chills.

Best Scenes: 1. When Paul first calls a woman from the government and she knows his name....chills againnn. 2. The ending.

Let's Get Political: In my opinion, this movie hits on a topic that is pretty right on. The film takes place in 2006 and even to this day, there are tons of POW over in Iraq and ransom videos like the one in this movie. Every one of their situations are different. Yet the government would rather just kill the terrorists and not care about the prisoners? On the other hand, it's tough to decide what the right action is unless you have had to make a decision like that which I, thankfully, haven't.

Best Lines: 1. Paul: "Yea, you're a terrorist you son of a b**ch." Jabir: "You terrified, so I'm terrorist" 2. Dan Brenner: "I'm so sorry, Paul."

Overall: Yes, it is a little tough to watch and parts of it are left open, but in my opinion, it adds to the suspense and also, this movie is totally underrated. I enjoyed it and was definitely on the edge of my seat. It's nice to see something a little different for a change.

A Beautiful and Horrifying Journey
17 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Hold On To Your Seat: I just finished this wonderful vision of film making tonight at approximately 3:01 a.m. and I am still feeling the chills from the ending. Basically the entire movie is James Franco (hardly moving) alone, with a rock smashed on his right arm. He has hallucinations, and a (fake) little radio show moment (shot through his digital camera) and a small amount of tools to figure out a way to survive. Watching him look into the camera and talk about how sorry he is for not calling his mom back, and how he won't make it to his sister's wedding is heart wrenching. Annnnd this is a true story. Having said that, it is also one of the most well-acted one man movies I've seen since Castaway. No wonder the academy loves Mr. Franco.

Best Scenes: 1. The beginning when he meets two girls hiking the trail he's hiking. 2. All the digital camera scenes. 3. The ending (If your queasy you might want to look away)

It's Not An Action Movie: So if you came to see one...go see Tron instead. This is a suspenseful character study and a journey into the life (and mind) of someone who went through a horrific experience. Believe me when I say it's pretty much a one-man movie. Also believe me when I say you shouldn't pass it up.

Best Line: Aron: "You know, I've been thinking. Everything is... just comes together. It's me. I chose this. I chose all this. This rock... this rock has been waiting for me my entire life. It's entire life, ever since it was a bit of meteorite a million, billion years ago. In space. It's been waiting, to come here. Right, right here. I've been moving towards it my entire life. The minute I was born, every breath that I've taken, every action has been leading me to this crack on the out surface."

Hello Danny Boyle: If you're a fan of his work, you will surely not be disappointed with this movie. He directed and co-wrote the screenplay for this movie and it is gooooooooood. Also if you are a nerd like me, you'll know who A.R. Rahman is (the guy behind Slumdog Millionaire's music) and you'll know he did the music for this movie as well. It's very good and....oh hey wait....oh hayyyy Dido! She's here too and her song is kinda the theme song for the movie.

Overall: Go see it. It's worth a watch but be warned...it's claustrophobic and you watch a guy cut something off at the end so yea. Just trying to help a brotha out.

Do Yourself A Favor...
4 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Sooo what did you think of this movie Diana? OK, so the basic premise of this weird, semi-generic horror film is that a man named Jamie(Jim Sturgess who is hot with or without a heart shaped birthmark) sees these weird reptile like looking demons doing crazy stuff all involving Molotovs and killing and blah blah. Then some horrible incident happens involving a family member. Then some weird biker looking guy comes along and promises a depressed/angry Jamie a life he wants without a birthmark on his face as long as he defaces property...of course...this guy is working with the devil, so he sits on a "throne of lies" (Thank you Will Ferrell) So Jamie has to kill some peeps in order to not be sacrificed over to the devil. Along the way, some other stuff happens that makes no sense. There's a weird Indian girl who has no real purpose other than to be the cheerleader for Jamie and the ending leaves you feeling like they just unraveled everything in 5 seconds. That's the ENTIRE movie. Now you don't have to sit through it... You're Welcome.

Only Reason Why I Didn't Hate This Film: The acting in some of the film is very good. There is a scene with Jamie and his new neighbor/friend at a bar, and they talk about the past. This scene, along with a few others were well done...shame the movie wasn't.

Best Scenes: 1. Above described bar scene. 2. The scenes with Jamie and his father. 3. The last scene with Jamie and his mother.

Attention Harry Potter Fans! As I am a huge fan of H.P. as well, a few of the stars pop up in this useless film. One is Fleur (from Goblet of Fire), and one is Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall) who only comes in for a few minutes and out-acts practically everyone else....they should make him a lead in a movie sometime...Buchemi defied the odds so Spall can too =)

Overall: It wasn't the worst of dumb horror films, but I have no desire to watch this one again...I guess if you are a well known director you get stars in your movie even if it does suck. Bad form Mr. Ridley...I'll stick with The Reflecting Skin.

4.5/10 Stars. You can read all my reviews at http://dianalynn5287.blogspot.com/ homieeee

The Science Of Sleep
29 December 2010
How To Make The Weirdest, Most Beautiful, Vivid, Love Story Ever: Start off by putting (my future husband) Gael Garcia Bernal in it. He is AMAZING as a kinda creepy, kinda weird, kinda cute disaster calendar developer who moves to France to stay with his mother after his father passes away. Also, he has sleeping problems where he can't distinguish whether he is dreaming or not. Also, he is sort of schizophrenic...and I would STILL date him. Then add cool crazy dream scenarios that resemble stuff happening in the main character's real life. Then make it funny and touching and unique. And POOF. You have an A+ film....trademark that.

Why You Might Think It's Too Weird And Not See It: 1. It's a movie about dreams, which people are either turned on to, or immediately run the other way. 2. Some of it is in English...most is in French...some is in Spanish. 3. It's unlike anything you've ever seen. 4. It's written AND directed by Michel Gondry. 5. Honestly, I think these are reasons why you should see it so stop being a stick in the mud and go rent it (or buy it).

Best Lines: 1. "Would you marry me when we are seventy? You have nothing to lose." 2. "This girl is at once all the women that broke my heart. She is so beautiful and generous and she is asking me to leave because she is dumping me. She is dumping me because I am a cheap drug dealer. And I am a drug dealer because she wants to leave me." 3. "Distraction is an obstruction to the construction." 4. "Things will turn out the way you want, if you could just stop doubting that I love you. Call me home."

Cellophane... To distinguish (as an audience) between what are dreams and what is reality, the director brilliantly uses things like felt, cardboard, and cellophane (among others) to be objects in the dream world. I don't really know what else to say about it except you'll understand once you see it...

Best Scenes: 1. The beginning. 2. The part about P.S.R. 3. Where they sing in cat suits. 4. Anything with Guy (see below). 5. The whole part about collecting beautiful objects. 6. The whole scene in the little cardboard car...and when he builds the city out of cardboard. 7. The spin-art parts. 8. The part with the 1 second time machine. 9. The ending<3

As I Was Saying: Alain Chabat who plays Guy is so funny throughout the whole movie. So is Sacha Bourdo who plays Serge...they work with Stephane (Bernal) and they basically help him on his journey to get Stephanie (One of my favorite actresses Charlotte Gainsbourg) to be in love with him. I can't really tell you anything else except that you should really just stop reading this and see it for yourself. It's wonderful.

Basic Premise of said film:
29 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
OK so this movie is basically about a washed up documentary film star/director who goes on an adventure to find the mysterious Jaguar Shark that ate his best friend. Along the way there's tons of drama and funny stuff going on. It's hard to explain what the film is really about, but it's worth a watch or two (it's a lot to get the first round so another might be needed...or wanted).

Why is it worth a watch? For the following reasons: 1. Bill Murray 2. It's a Wes Anderson movie so you know it has dry humor and great actors and a weird plot line and yea. Wes Anderson kicks a**. 3. WILLEM DAFOE my favvvvvvvorite (and soooo funny!) 4. It's unlike anything else out there. 5. Cody the dog. I want him. 6. The animation is awesome.

Nice Touch: Throughout the film, they play David Bowie songs which is awesome in itself, but then they have this amazing black guy with a guitar who sings the same David Bowie songs in Icelandic which is even more awesome...I want the soundtrack.

Best Lines: 1. Festival Director: "That's an endangered species at most. What would be the scientific purpose of killing it?" Steve Zissou: "Revenge." 2. Bill Ubell: "No Captain! That's Cedric. He's a friend." Steve Zissou: "Merci, Cedric. Remind me, we'll send him a red cap and a Speedo." 3. Jane Winslett-Richardson: "In twelve years, he'll be eleven and a half." Steve Zissou: (pause) "That was my favorite age."

Best Scenes: 1. The whole "Boat tour" where Steve is explaining all the compartments. 2.The whole scene on the Ping Island. 3. Finally seeing the Jaguar Shark (andd Sigur Ros "Staralfur" is the song in the background which makes this scene steal the film)

P.S. Towards the end of the film, they totally hit you with a curve ball which is actually pretty sad, but you probably won't cry or anything...because the movie is really funny. 10 points for Wes Anderson for making this movie...and 10 points to Bill Murray for just being Bill Murray. 8.5/10 Stars.

Woooow
29 December 2010
So, Diana, was it amazing? Um...yes. This movie won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film over The White Ribbon which I loved, and it was totally well deserved. The basic premise of this film is revolved around the life of a retired federal justice agent who wants to write a novel about the case that changed his life...that's all I'll say.

Best Lines: "How do you live a life full of nothing" "If you keep going over the past, you're going to end up with a thousand pasts and no future"

Just cuz I want to talk about it more... The man that played Morales was such a stand out actor...I could completely feel the pain he was going through and it made my movie experience that much better. Also I don't think I stated before that this movie is subtitled (don't watch it dubbed...you'll juke yourself out of a movie experience and I'll kick you in the chin). Also I forgot to mention this movie is funny as well.

Best Scenes (without spoilers): 1. The scene in the elevator...I had chills the entire time. 2. The scene where Sandoval has his notary help Esposito figure everything out...epic. 3. The entire ending<3

Overall: I think everyone who likes crime dramas should see this one. Also everyone who likes love stories. Also everyone who likes good movies. Don't let the subtitles turn you off of it. It's definitely worth the 2 hour watch. 10/10 Stars. Classic.

Hmmm Where To Start...Where To Start.....
29 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I was originally a little leery about seeing this movie (even though I'm pretty Boss and can usually take stuff like this)...I heard it was actually pretty hard to watch. So like 10 minutes ago, I finally finished it and felt like a pansy for thinking I couldn't. Don't let people come up telling you "OMG it's so horrible and blah blah blah." Um, no, it's awesome. I'm a HUGE fan of cool splatter-gore, crazy, freak you out movies and this one has it all...including a whole load of torture by the COOLest bad guy everrrr Tadanobu Asano (Kakihara) and his 2 foot needles. He looks like a pierced up rockstar who you want to get to know, but stay away from at the same time.

Best Lines: 1. Kakihara: "There's no love in your violence." 2. Kakihara: "Damn... Nobody left to kill me." 3. Kakihara: "Put some feeling into it, already! If you're going to give someone pain, you've got to get into it!" 4. Jiro: "Is it possible to rip someone's arm off with your bare hands?"

Other Super Cool Things: The acting by Tadanobu Asano (Kakihara) and Nao Ohmori (Ichi) is so right on point. There's never really a dull moment in the entire movie, which is kind of a mix of horror and comedy. But the real reason why this movie is so good, is because of how it makes you feel sad for these killers/heroes the whole time...especially Ichi who seems at one minute, completely mental, and the next, completely sweet and innocent. Not to mention the gore is pretty cool and the torture scenes are pretty cool also (especially what they do to the character Suzuki who really gets it) Some other stand out characters are the twins who will make you LOL toward the middle of the movie and Takeshi (Kaneko's son) who winds up having a big part.

My Only Problem: They introduce most of the characters to you all at once so if you aren't realllly paying attention to the names, you might get a little lost toward the middle.

Best Scenes (Without Spoilers): 1. The very beginning when Kakihara turns around and you get to see his face for the first time...he's smoking...it's awesome. 2. The Suzuki torture scene and the torture scene with the...arm (as quoted above)...haha 3. When Ichi goes to the hotel (we see his work for the first time) and he speaks to the beaten lady from the club. 4. When you find out why Ichi kills people. 5. The new Anjo gang with leader Kakihara is shown walking down the street in slo-mo. 6. The entire ending scene on the roof. 7. When Jijii takes his shirt off towards the end...you will never see it coming...

Overall: It's not for everyone, but I will put it on my list of super cool foreign movies. This one has heart to it (and tons of gore) so if your up for it, do yourself a favor and sit through the 2 hours of great cinematography and splatter-gore/torture/love story/bullying story/horror/comedy. Then tell me what you made of the amazingly (left-open) ending.
