Into the Night (2020)
If you want the stupid version of Langoliers
Awful...
No idea why this belgian scifi gets over 7.0 on IMDB. You don't invest in the characters at all as the writing in it's prosaic form disallows it. There are more holes than a big block of swiss cheese. Like when the helicopter pilot with convenient military experience during a hijack blissfully agrees to pilot a passenger jet unquestionably... 😮 Didn't help that i chose to watch the dubbed version with actors that turn the Belgian and French actors into planks of wood.
I was interested as the plot reminded me of Langoliers but sadly, this is the zero IQ version.
The idea of the sun killing humanity and the passengers having to stay in the night is good...
The execution of it...abysmal. 😣
Astral (2018)
A big B for Boring
So boring, you may try astral projection just to make the time interesting or just yawn and drop off to sleep...
I did the latter...
Actors come across as flat as it gets thanks to awful writing and direction.
The director must have read a book on dull film production and is an example of the kind of play-it-safe no-drive director I despise in the horror genre.
That's it. Nothing else to say about this shockingly dull trite.
Bedeviled (2016)
Not the worst horror...
But close...
With more holes than a gopher infested golf course, we soon realise despite that, this is a film with a premise that should have worked. Simple but effective premises like supernaturally possessed apps in a digitally crazed world are great kick starters for a jumpy horror flick.
Sadly not here...
It's like a film slipped off the dire sci-fi channel horror servings and slopped onto Netflix.
The actors do what they can with a script jammed with stereotypes and tropes that soon bore. And the parents...where the heck did they go?? These teenagers seem to have found a way to eject parenthood.
A couple of the actors fail to shine at all and probably need some serious drama class time.
This should be a scary flick but handled by the wrong team. Some chilling moments arrive and not just worn jump scares but the whole production is so poorly handled, you fail to give a s***! The end shot really okay but you've stopped caring by then...assuming you didn't turn it off.
Weak acting, writing and production value...screwed up what could have reached the success of so many films in a similar vein like Pulse, The Ring, Stay Alive.
Maybe next time...
Ghosts of Darkness (2017)
This awful is zero not 1 but can't select zero...
Hats off to the director. Good job. Hope he gets to work on better budget films.
The film is flawed more than insanely possible right from the start when we instantly realise that apart from one or two actors - none can act and an unintentional goofy horror comes your way.
Trapped inside wooden acting that makes cliches funny again, the pain grows with every second of amateurish moment that unfolds...
Shame as the director gets the genre. But he needed better writers, better actors (not hard to find) and better production value.
Horrifying movie yes... but not in a good way. Just bad from the start folks.
Nightlight (2015)
The woods are scary again
The Covington forest scars a local town with a history of teen suicides. When one friend of a group takes his own life there, the group of teens head to the forest to investigate it's shrouded mystery for a night of hide and seek gaming with a flashlight called Nightlight in a rather dark place. Unfortunately, they discover a hidden evil lurking around the forest flora.
Bad reviews from folks here. At a guess I'd say it's a mixture of found footage haters and angst towards any teen horror flick. Is it the scariest found footage horror? Nope. How does it work? It succeeds in hurling scares at you from the darkness and puts the fear factor back into the woods. In a nutshell, it's a success where Blair Witch failed to scare or tell a decent tale.
The naysayers will disagree. If you like a dose of creeping supernatural hocus pocus and unexplained dark demonic beings and don't mind the used 'investigate that strange noise in the woods' trope, there's enough frights going on to please horror fans.
The Revenant (2009)
Thrilling Buddy Horror Movie
How can those two genres even mix? Gore horror and classic buddy movie action sizzle together. Fallen marine Bart returns home in a coffin, but not for long, much to the surprise of his best friend Joey played by the quite brilliantly unique Chris Wylde. Upon rising from the grave, Bart seeks solace in his buddy who does what he can to aid his dead friend - even if it means bending the rules a bit. When it seems that only human blood can keep Bart from rotting away, Joey takes him to the streets as a vigilante killer and so plenty of warm blood to drain. The movie develops in a way that will hook you to the brilliant end sequence. The performances are world class, and the script razor sharp blending black humor and witty dialogue from start to finish. Zombie movies get an original slant here. This is the very best of the indie movie industry.
The Shrine (2010)
Ignore Bad Reviews...this horror movie kicks ass!
When this film starts its pretty dark path, how dark it gets will not be revealed until an absolute firecracker twist... talk about misdirection, wow. Anyway, no spoilers. Whatever you do, avoid YouTube videos as they carry the very spoiler that will just ruin the impact of the destination this film reaches.
What we have here is an investigative journalist Carmen seeking answers to the disappearance of backpacker Eric Taylor at a Polish village. At the behest of her editor, story hungry Carmen convinces her disapproving boyfriend and loyal assistant to travel with her to the village in search of answers. What they find are gruesome secrets and then find themselves fighting for their lives as they try to escape the hostile locals.
Now, you probably think you have got it from that synopsis....well...nope. And when you have witnessed this horror flick, you will know why. The Shrine proves that a horror movie's true roots are suspense and shock not gore. That said, lots of gore folks, but that third act in the story, a satisfying chill for horror buffs.
If you like movies that take you to a dark place and then turn the whole world upside down, you have found it. Visit The Shrine. Scares are guaranteed.
Super Hybrid (2010)
Unexpected thrilling full throttle horror ride.....
Seems reviewers here missed the point or simply do not really get the horror genre, its eclectic mix of thresholds, how it can transform quickly and how it is not just about Brad Pitt killing zombies.
True horror movies take what we view as ordinary, run-of-the-mill, and take that to a place, usually a dark place, and present something totally unexpected.
Here is a movie that does just that. Believe me, when you see how this movie goes, you will be glad you sat down to watch it. Here we have a killer sentient car, able to transform into other car models (wow...what a paint job!) at will, and tempts people to sit inside - to consume their flesh. Following an accident, the battered car is towed into a Chicago police impound garage. For the employees trapped inside, it is a fight for survival against a malicious being...
The car from hell idea is no newbie to the horror genre but what this film does with the idea - sure is folks! I am not adding spoilers here.
I love horror movies where the evil transcends from the usual: the serial killer, the thing in the lake, the alien beings, the possession... That's all been there, done that, and few films manage to bring something new with those premises. So, when I read about a killer car morphing into other car shapes and outwitting humans - I just had to see it. Last time I saw a killer car idea as good as this one was actually called The Car, a 70s horror movie.
The simple premises are always the best ones in this genre. This one goes into overdrive and pits steel against bone in 90 mins of pure thrill time.
The Lodge (2008)
Weak acting and directing that lacks punch spoiled what could have been THE horror movie
I don't think a spoiler exists here but I checked the box anyway in case. So on the film - I see it time and time again, a great story hampered by some horrible acting and a director who films like an amateur. Not saying the director is an amateur, but much of the angles lacked the impact that a film like this really needs. Maybe it was budget but a good director can spin a camera into a wonder device for great shots no matter the budget. OK, so we have a couple who rent out a lodge (a very beautiful lodge btw), and discover the caretaker has a chilling surprise in store for them. The premise is good, not original, but it should make for a tingling experience. The psycho caretaker theme should work every time but sadly here, it is not the case and it is not the writer (the story that is, screenplay needs a lot of work..) but the filmmaker and actors at fault. Indie films are where the best films start, and often shame the big budget Hollywood productions by showing that a low budget does not equate to a terrible movie. Here sadly, it is not the case.
The Ferryman (2007)
One Hell Of A Horror Ride...
I decided to knock just two points off this movie simply down to the pointless character depth probing that caused the story to linger needlessly near the beginning.
But that's all... as this is one of the best horror movies I have seen in recent years. I have to agree with the previous reviewer, it's refreshing that the characters were people you can care about; some empathy is possible rather than just seeing a load of high school brats being sliced up one by one, as is the usual formula.
Here, a few couples on a luxury voyage to Fiji investigate an abandoned boat in response to its distress call following the horrific opening scene. There, they find John Rhys-Davies the sole survivor, sick and weak, and rescue him. Unbeknownst to the crew, their voyage of fun and love is soon coming to an end as they picked up a being that has been escaping death (The Ferryman) for centuries using a mystical dagger that allows him to swap bodies...
If you love horror movies, do not miss this roller-coaster ride from the New Zealand movie industry. Horror fans will adore watching the demonic being hopping from one body to another to survive aboard a luxury yacht. The film starts with a violent and gory scene fit for the demanding horror fans out there.
John Rhys-Davies, what a catch for the movie! He is outstanding as the Greek rescued by the yacht's crew in response to his distress signal. The basic formula soon unwinds as the not-so-hapless crew is his prey for some great horror scenes offering plenty of ghoulish moments.
Echoes of other films will come to mind where demonic possession is concerned. The atmosphere generates the necessary foreboding feeling that draws you into the unfolding chaos and terror of the macabre.
Horror fans may have missed this one due to its surprising online reviews that support the contrary on it not being any kind of a masterpiece. But, as a horror movie fanatic, this movie supersedes most of the crappy teen horror movies and awful remakes hitting your screens lately. You will find the movie refreshing after some real dull not-so-scary movies this last couple of years.
A must-see...
