Locke (2013)
2/10
Project Management - The Movie
10 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The whole film is a man in his car making phone calls. Actually, that's not entirely true, there is an exciting bit where he opens a big project binder to go through the list of road closings necessary to allow for C6 (not C5) concrete to be delivered for the biggest concrete pour in Europe (outside of the Military and Nuclear industries). Most of the time he doesn't appear to be wearing his seat-belt, and sometimes (while driving at 90) he is reading from the binder while driving. It is a miracle no-one is killed.

The drama reaches a climax when we are unsure if the stop/go road closure on vale road will actually get a council permit in time for the duty officer at the police station to be informed, and in the meantime it is clear that the shuttering for one of the pour pumps is not to standard and must be fixed by an emergency crew of polish builders.

In the meantime he is also dealing with what seems to be a more minor project, the birth of his bastard child outside of his marriage, although he doesn't have a folder for that one.

In the end we don't really know if the concrete pour works out, or anything else. We are left hanging for the outcome of a plot concerning characters we don't really care about at all.

Perhaps all will be settled in a sequel - "Locke 2 - The drive home"?

Close to perfect

I watched this film because I wanted to learn more about the French New Wave method of cinema, but I found myself very quickly drawn into the characters and the story itself. This is a painting of life with a palette that is almost complete, it so effortlessly portrays reality in it's most mundane and most beautiful at the same time. It sounds corny to say it, but it raises the everyday to the sublime. Don't get too distracted and bogged down by the French philosophy here, it turns out that is just a ruse, a sort of nervous tick that people are using to hide real feelings.

I would say it's not's quite "Tokyo Story", but it's damn close.

Quite a struggle

As a huge fan of "London" and "Robinson in Space" I was very excited about this film. However, it didn't really work without the voice of Paul Scofield. If you haven't seen any of the three then watch "Robinson in Space". Watch this if you want to complete the series, but otherwise don't bother. The footage is far slower and lazier than the other two films, and much less interesting. The pace of commentary just is far too slow. There are gaps where we are left staring at something not very interesting for quite a time.

Perhaps Kellier was in a rush to release? This film is nowhere need tight enough to come up to the standard of the the other two films.

Kellier is a genius no doubt - the price of being a genius is the occasional mistake.
