Shut In (2022)
Rainey Qualley was Outstanding
I had zero expectations with this movie because I knew none of the actors or actresses, I was totally locked in from the get go and asking myself where did Rainey Qualley come from and why I haven't seen her in more movies? Her daughter Lanie was the perfect precocious daughter as well! Her crackhead boyfriend and his psychotic friend hit their marks as well. Very gritty movie with some subtle yet surreal moments like the wounds to each of her hands. Well written, well directed and Rainey was out flipping standing. I'll definitely check out more of her movies as well. The whole movie taking place is her Nana's house and her apple butter being the thing that both sustained them in the short stressful time and the very thing that allowed them to continue living in Nana's house making a living off the apple butter from those same apples she mostly despised in the beginning was like full circle and in so many ways. Loved the movie, the people in the movie and the story itself. Well done!!!
Highlander (1986)
3.5/5 stars? Are people on crack????
This movie is nothing short of a classic. The marriage of Freddie Mercury's amazing vocals singing "Who wants to live forever" the orchestral movements of their songs plus other Queen songs ties into the scenes of the Scottish Highlands and New York City like no other movie has. A perfect marriage of the right song for the right scene or dialogue can make or break a movie and in The Highlander - it makes it. Perfection. I don't want to get into the movie details - that's been expounded upon enough, but what I will say is that if someone watches this movie and doesn't enjoy the rich tapestry of the cinematography, the music and the storyline itself. Well they are either an incredible movie snob, or blind and deaf. The protagonist in the movie is awesome as well. Exuding evil and from the beginning you know a clash between Conner and his Evilness is nothing short of mandatory. Yes, The Highlander is a one of a kind movie. Amazing soundtrack, plenty of action and also a storyline that consists of centuries woven down into a just under a 2 hour tale. That took craftsmanship. I think people don't think of it in those terms, they just grade it on whether it meets their lofty ideals of what a movie should be. But if you're the type of person who can sit back and appreciate epic sword battles, or a particular scene with Freddie singing "Who wants to live forever" and you see a man in the 1500-1600's loving a woman with his entire being, knowing that he ultimately will see her die. The passion of that romance, then you will enjoy this movie from start to finish. If you don't enjoy it, then your movie critiques only come from your head and not your heart. Watch this movie and then watch it again. I'm actually writing this review after watching it for the umpteenth time. I really don't even know how many times. But in some not too distant future I will watch it again, enjoying it as fully as the first time.
Wicker Park (2004)
Wow- 10 years missing out on an amazing film.
I saw this movie in a hotels HBO - more out of bore dome than anything else. But boy was this a fantastic surprise. I enjoyed this movie so much that I rated it 10/10 because it has such a captivating story. I don't think Matthew Lilliard or Josh Hartnett are such amazing actors, but in the roles they played, they did quite well. Diane Kruger did a very good job, but Rose stole the show. She really made me want her to get hit by a bus being such a conniving and treacherous feline. I won't give any spoilers away other than the one I just did, I will say that I will definitely watch this movie with my wife and I'm sure she will love it. I certainly hope you enjoy it as I did.
Jûsan-nin no shikaku (2010)
One of the best I've seen..
This movie has an immense amount of depth for a movie of it's genre. There are many things about this movie that motivated me to rank it as I did. Starting with the acting - from the main characters, their roles, words, facial expressions, movements - done with such sincerity. Honest, real emotions. It gives you a glimpse into a world where honor is defined and mutated by the hearts of men. One Samurai, honors and views his position as a guardian of the people, able to see, comprehend, and act upon injustice. And the other Samurai? His heart is not towards the people, but has, as I've said mutated into an honor, that seemingly cloaked in the traditional honor of serving and protecting his lord, is really mutated into a self-serving, blinded existence that could potentially be his downfall. Who knows? Who triumphs in this movie? Be prepared to be surprised on many levels! The swordplay is bar none in my opinion. The landscape genuine, with fantastic cinematography. As many movies in this genre, there are moments of 'over-the-top' exclamatory remarks that often typify a Shogun/Samurai flick, this just keeps reminding you that an American producer with more eye for gore than plot is NOT at the helm of this ship. This movie has it all for me. It has a plot, a story line that will have you remembering the 7 Samurai, The Magnificent 7, and a little of the A-Team, but done so in a remarkable fashion, executed in a classical, raw, well orchestrated fashion. I will watch this again. I will undoubtedly see more to this movie then, than now. And that will be a treat unto itself. If you are a fan of the Samurai/Shogun genre of film. Watch this. pop the popcorn or whatever, but don't drink too much because you will not want to get up, even for a bathroom break on this one!
