Hollywood Dirt (2017)
It is official, this is the worst movie I've ever seen
Oh man where to begin, this movie honestly has absolutely nothing good besides the leads' looks, but the bad are countless:
1. Terrible fake Southern accent, the actress sounds like my drunk self trying to sound like I'm from Texas (I'm not even from the States nor English is my first language). I cringe each time the actress says her lines.
2. Cringe worthy scenes, not because I'm new to the romance genre, I actually read the book.
3. There is absolutely no chemistry between the two leads, simply due to terrible writing and awful acting.
4. The town looks like it's consisted of 2 houses, a church and a park. The cheap production obviously shows.
And there are more, but I need to go watch something else immediately to erase this movie from my memory asap.
Watchmen (2019)
A solid and well-made show, definitely a must watch
The main theme of this show is about race, but it's not overly done in a way that stresses viewers out. I even felt like I've learned something throughout the show, about history and pain that African American people went through. The story is quite interesting and is told in a reasonably structured way while making sure that all the details have its purpose. It does feel a little bit rushed towards the end, but not terribly. Acting was great too, definitely a must watch.
The Old Guard (2020)
Whoever edited this movie needs to change career
Seriously the editing was so bad it made the entire movie awkward. One scene we have characters joking and 1 second later both of them stand still and became dead serious for absolutely no reason. The music made it worse, it does not sync with the scenes at all, and if anything made the movie feel cheaper. 4 stars because 1) Interesting premise (immortality etc.), 2) Charlize Theron, 3) Matthias Schoenaerts, 4) Good to feel hatred towards Dudley from Harry Potter again (he plays the villain). Anyway, if you have time to kill, watch it while scrolling through your social media.
Sweet Magnolias (2020)
Easy watch, not the best acting but enjoyable enough
It's a good enough show if you just want to watch netflix and relax after a busy day. Maddie's wardrobe is to die for and it's easy to like her character. Helen is such a badass lawyer, in writing only unfortunately, mostly because I think the acting wasn't very good. I can tell easily that she is acting, not really being the character and that doesn't make a great watching experience. Dana Sue is whatever, there's not much to root for for her, but the acting is good enough to make up for a bland and boring character. This show is truly a drama, but it's not terribly over the top nor extremely cheesy (so far - I'm 2 episodes to the finale).
Time to Eat with Nadiya (2019)
More ads than actual cooking
Nadiya is great and charming as usual. Not all of the recipes seem to be that tasty (like using beef jerky to eat with noodle, it might just be me but that doesn't sound delicious). This show was marketed as recipes that save you time, so a lot of them are not exactly healthy but I could have looked past that, if not because almost half of every episode is just an ad sponsored by a produce company! Honestly, I gave up after 3 eps. What a waste of time, you won't learn much from this show.
Ocean's Eight (2018)
Pleasantly enjoyable with a great cast!
Seriously, just the cast alone would have been enough for me to rate this at least 7. Will this movie be nominated at the academy award? Probably not. But it doesn't mean it's not enjoyable. The plot was interesting enough that I didn't feel the need to look at my phone while watching this on netflix. This is a great movie for a friday evening that you just want to watch something light-hearted, a tiny little bit of suspense and entertaining.
Carnival Row (2019)
Thoroughly enjoyed the show!
I agree with one of the reviews here, you should really watch it till the end. To me I was hooked right from the beginning but I can see how some other audiences might lose interest due to the somewhat complex sub-plots, which won't seem like they're intertwined. But the thing is - they are, not until later episodes though. The show is very visually appealing, Tirnanoc landscapes were beautiful, Carnival row seems small, but again this is not a modern world where people drive everywhere so it would not be logical that a pocket of the city (aka The Burgue) is massive. There are a few things I don't like about the show, like the casting of the 2 main characters, and their lack of on-screen chemistry, which might be due to writing I admit or the limited amount of shared scenes. I also wished there were more to Agreus' backstory and his journey to become a wealthy "Puck", but I guess the showrunners gotta keep the room opened for the coming seasons. However, with that being said, there are way more things that I like than dislike. The story is great in my opinion, I don't think the racism theme was overdone at all. Most of the sub-plots are linked at the end, with a few that were not, lead to more doors for season 2, which I'm ecstatic to know that it's already been filming. I think it's a great show, and can't wait to see more of it.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Slow, predictable and a show identity crisis
I'm writing this review as someone who didn't read the comic, and this is purely just meant to be about this show.
So the show started out strong, slow but strong. The characters seem extremely interesting and I was immediately hooked to see the second episode. But once I got to episode 5, I was dreadfully tired of their interactions and the storyline.
The first thing that I found problematic with this show is its indentity crisis. It tries to be dark and serious at some scenes and then has playful pop music with some slow motions like it's trying to be funny. It just creates a weird vibe overall.
The characters' interactions are just so awkward. Granted that they haven't met in 12 years, but then Allison tried so hard to help Vanya figure out that thay Leonard dude is a creep like they've been bestfriends all along. Or Diego tried to trigger Number One's anger (that's right I cannot even remember what's his name) all the time by saying things that are straight up random and rude. The whole thing feels like 2 children were fighting, while still trying to be serious and dark. The acting wasn't there either. I like Ellen Page, she was fantastic in Inception. But oh my it's boring to see her having the same character design and look and personalities over and over again. It's like she doesn't wanna grow up from Juno.
The storyline is so predictable and slow, even for someone who has never read the comic like me. That is not a deal breaker if done right. You know where I'm going - it was definitely NOT done right. Character developements were missing, there is no justification when they make a major decision. Also why is Allison - a famous actress - breaking in someone's house without being regconized. Lots of plot holes, good cinematography, but that's just not enough to make this a good show.
Friends from College (2017)
The most realistic show about friendship!
I started watching this show purely because of Cobie Smulders (yes HIMYM's fan here). But in all honesty, this is not my usual type of show that I'd watch, I usually go for either comedy show that you can watch mindlessly or intensely dark ones that leave you somewhat emotionally invested. Friends from college doesn't really fit in either one of those categories. It makes me think about what would happen in the next episode and want to discuss the relationships in this show with others. It's still comedy, but not too dark, just real. The characters are so flawed, yet so real, I borderline want to hate them but then I also find myself empathize with their struggles. One of the reviews I read said that this show would only resonate with people who are over 36. I'm still in my twenties and I enjoy it very much. It's not the best show I've ever watched, hence the 8 not 10. But it is a solid show and I like how the creators don't sugarcoat friendships and the complicated aspects surrounding these characters. Definitely recommend and hopefully this will be renewed for another season.
