Playing Beatie Bow (1986)
A rollercoaster ride
I read the book in year 6 or 7 (1989/90) and we went on an excursion to Sydney to see some of the filming locations around The Rocks. We also watched the movie, and I do NOT remember it being like this! It's a hilarious, shocking, wild ride. Surely our school didn't let us watch some of these scenes at that age? I'm now going to have to reread the book to see how faithful the movie is to it - not very... surely?! The "modern" setting was a nice nostalgia trip. It was entertaining, at least; I'll give it that!
Christmas Wedding Planner (2017)
Pretty bad
There were stupid sound effects and really bad music. They hold an engagement party then the wedding happens less than a week later.
The main character repeatedly spoke with food in her mouth. She hit the guy she was arguing with for most of the movie (one was a playful punch, but then she hit him on the hand/arm after having an argument with him (and of course not letting him explain his side of things)). She orders lobster for this guy and he just sits there and allows it to be served without telling her he has a shellfish allergy. She doesn't know who her cousin's ex-boyfriend is, when he shows up, yet she told us at the start of the movie that her cousin is like her sister.
The scenes with the baker are just painful to watch; what an absolutely pathetic character. Same for the ones with the groom's parents. Why did the bride wear tiara headbands all the time? Why would the lead's love interest call her away from her job on false pretenses, just to tell her his feelings? Why did it take more time to introduce the bridesmaids and explain their traits, than the amount of dialogue and screen time they were given? How did the bride put on and choose a dress in about one minute?
The ending is absolutely ludicrous. Besides the obvious things that everyone else has mentioned, who would've actually stayed to watch the wedding? Not the groom's side, that's for sure. And why did they just happen to have the family wedding dress there, when the bride had no intention of wearing it?
Bafflingly stupid in so many ways.
The Dance (2007)
Not the worst movie I've seen...
I bought this movie for $2 in a cheap shop so I wasn't expecting too much from it. I found it fairly boring until the focus turned to the main couples having various serious discussions. I found some of them touching and there were some funny moments, too. I actually engaged with the movie at this point, but I hadn't really done so up to this point. It also made some of the characters more likable. I liked the young couple in particular. The actor who played Cameron reminded me of Jeremy Piven at times. The music wasn't great but to be expected of a low budget movie. The actual dance itself was really bad and totally unbelievable that people would want to hang around at it once they went in! It wasn't bad; I would probably watch it again.
