Good Action/SciFi Movie with Cyborg themes
23 March 2022
Bad reviewers didn't watch the entire move, or aren't really SciFi / Action fans. Or maybe just don't like MVP as hero for whatever reason. I found MVP did a good job, just as good as any other role that requires showing little emotion. He is a cyborg with none, but like the wooden puppet of legend, is programmed to be humane and grows his morals. A really good look at what soldiers of tomorrow may face. The scientist who build such tools will be torn between conflicting goals, as this android is. However, the truth is that killing machines are a much more likely fate. But the movie is a good adventure, and isn't predictable, has several interesting twists. And Adrien Brody, WIlliam Sadler, and Barry Corbin all show quite well and Add a lot.

Better than the Last one, and Mostly Good
22 October 2021
Overall it was good. Good video graphics mixed with stunts and action. Well conceived script that captures a great deal of the Book.

However: 1) Baron was a BORE, and there were No scenes related to his homosexuality due to fear of charges of Homophobia. So even with the great Stellan Skarsgard there is no menace there.

2) No Feyd Rautha, instead we get Rabban who has few lines, and those are poor 3)Piter DeVries is nothing. One or two lines, nothing from the book, and he is one of the best evil characters along with the Baron.

4) Sardukar are OK, done well SO, the Harkonnens / Bad Guys are not remotely as menacing as in the book, and that was perhaps the 2nd best story element. Lost here.

5) Duncan Idaho played by Momoa was good, and he did a great job with it.7) Thufir was done quite well, but had few lines. Same with Yueh, As this movie version was long, and if they had included these minor characters and their stories, it would have probably doubled the length. So much was just sacrificed.

8)Fremen - Done well, and Stilgar was great. Zendaya wasn't bad, and they had inordinate screen time of her face, without saying much of consequence. I think she could have done better, and maybe part 2 will show. But for now, I say "tell me about your home world, Usul" sticks 9) Paul was the best improvement and carried this film with a great performance. Timothy is easily better than Kyle was and was both Child, and Duke, and saviour, and full of doubts. Tough to do well, but he did it. And shined at the End especially.] 10) Oscar is always good.

I liked the film, but this material is obviously better suited for Series or Mini-Series as it is too much for 2-3 hours 9)

SEAL Team in AFRICA w/topics you never see and GORGEOUS JUNGLE
9 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I do love this movie. Even though it's not Academy award stuff, it has SO many good points and scenes 1) Nick Chindlund - This really good actor gets to play the Good Guy for once as BW's comrade in Arms and his character is the most developed and sympathetic, does a great job and gets a good death scene 2) As many other reviews state, the military action is as close to real as it gets. That alone makes it a good film. But I thought the major theme was their transition from Mission Oriented to where they are fighting for something more than their orders. Question the film asks is WHY hasn't the USA done more of this type of military mission in Africa. and the films answer is that USA should do more missions to oppose such evil 3)Jungle cinematography is Awe Inspiring. there is no better movie to take a trip thru the jungle 4)Bruce Willis can carry a film and he does so here. But there are many good supporting actors add excellent lines/scenes, like the Colonel who bodyguards the prince. I never felt I was seeing actors as the refugees from the Mission flee thru the Jungle

Great vehicle for Vin Diesel- Worth the Wait for Bloodshot
16 March 2020
I really enjoyed the film. Good Action, humor, and a heart. Saw it in the Theater Right as Covid struck and ended that for a while. When I compare to Hobbs and Shaw, which had NO heart this was SO much better than just action for actions sake with some wisecraking dolts thrown in. First of a planned series, based on Valiant comics, it was good enough for me to want to see the next, as this was limited by having to tell the backstory. Vin Diesel is the best Action Star at present, so that entails a sacrifice of the eclectic. You don't see him outside this genre much because he is so good at it. And he usually chooses the right types of story that are more Vin Diesel has found the Answer to $making heaps of money = FAMILY all his movies now play on this basic concept, build a family that the viewers can care about as we all love our family. So he figured that out in F&F and then has used it in XXX (X takes care of it's own) and Last Witch Hunter (#2 on the way - Micheal Cain was the father figure and next will be with his wife and my guess is baby)

Perfect Vehicle for Rockwell, this is a Wonderful Feel Good story with and Addiction angle
19 May 2019
Sam Rockwell is perfect for this part, and does a great job with it. In real life h can't play basketball at all, but in watching this performance I found myself believing he was an all star. But he has a drinking problem, a very serious problem. The movie doesn't sidestep this at all, but it doesn't drag the movie down either. The actresses playing the girls all do a perfect job, and I commend them all. Emma Roberts is best, with Sharika Epps right behind. And Margo Martindale is fantastic, seems made for the part of the bus driver and then assistant coach. The Negotiation between her and Sam to take the job is hilarious. I won't give any real spoilers here, other than to say that I was left with the feeling that Sams Coach will recover in the end, and I found the ending was perfect for this disease, from which you're never totally cured.

Gangster Movie updated to this century and decade - In the Tradition of Ed G Rob
9 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Modern Gangster flick with good music and acting. I always liked the old gangster films from the Roaring Twenties, and this is the modern update. It has gorgeous women, naked dancers, exotic and luxurious locales, high-end toys, sex and Love, and the #1 theme of the brotherhoods of thieves. The biggest problem is that it's a remake, and so tries to use the prior story which leads to a weaker plot. But the dialog wasn't cliche'd and the acting was very good by the 3 leads Priest, Eddie, and Scatter. The only thing I hated was his hairdo, and I bet he hated it, too. Nice to see Esai Morales doing his thing, and several of the supporting actors do a great job. Those original gangster themes were classics, so were they any better? Honestly not. And a car chase that ends with a statue of a Confederate soldier killing the Leader of a Rival Gang was a nice touch. Oh, and btw I am against the destruction of CSA historical monuments for the most part.

Gods of Egypt (2016)

Breathtaking CGI of Ancient Egypt and and Excellent Movie by Great Director
26 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This was the movie where White-Washing as a standard was initiated by PC Critics/Journalists who decided to destroy this movie if they could. So almost all the negative reviews are based in great part on this issue. An unbiased analysis: CGI is excellent, as the gods are 50% larger than normal humans, can change form, and it all looks as natural as it could for this mythical view. Ancient Egypt - it's gods, cities, monsters, and landscape are brilliantly depicted. The Action is mostly good, although the hero does hop thru a few too many scenes and mazes such that the last was definitely too much. Acting is very good, with top flight performances by all the major parts. Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Gerard Butler were all at their best. I found the Love Story & interplay between the goddess of love and her 2 suitors to be quite unique and interesting, with Yung as much more than a pretty face. It isn't supposed to be a History Lesson, but a Fantasy and Proyas showed intimate understanding of Egypt and her gods. It is a fun movie to watch, and I have done so over 20 times already.

Great Anime Adaptation to the Big Screen
15 February 2019
I was totally engaged in this movie for 90%+ as it had a good script to go with the Hot Action sequences. I was not disappointed at all like I was after seeing ScarJo's GIS which was awful. A real letdown. But this was fantastic, and I will be seeing it again. 3D was good, and this movie is perfect for that medium. Hopefully they will make the sequel, because that would be better. A must see for any fans of Japanese Anime

Norse action D&D style
5 January 2019
High production values and a very good cast make this a movie that I watched several times and will again. This is not a ripoff of any tv series and feels more like a d&d adventure w/fantasy elements. Sure, there are unbelievable items but no more than any other movie so such criticism is silly. The Vikings are the heroic figures in this tale and there is a fighting monk who joins them. Several actors did great work here as did the director as this could have been a real dud in lesser hands.

Another Heston Sci-Fi Gem from the 70s
16 November 2016
Yes, it's cheesy at times. Charlton "doomsday" Heston began his sci-fi trek in the 70's and gave us 3 great movies, of which this is one. I love the pithy One-Liners that began with this flick, and are now a staple. Heston was a leader of the Civil Rights movement in Hollywood, and so we have a great interracial dynamic created by the producers when the last man finds the last woman. Anthony Zerbe is fantastic as his nemesis, and Rosalind Cash was a new performer but did everything she could with this role. There are some great plot twists and tons of irony. The fantasy that you are the Last Man on Earth is a powerful one, done perfectly for this film. The ending imagery was a little over the top, but fitting. And the divergence from the novel about zombies to germ warfare was great. Loved it.

Soylent Green (1973)

Top SciFi from the 70s - Charlton Heston = God of SciFi?
16 November 2016
I still love watching Soylent Green as it's the only movie that has the guts to examine the issue of extreme overpopulation depleting the planetary resource pool, which it will OBVIOUSLY do at some point. This was predicted long ago by Malthus, and doomsday Heston is there with Eddie Robinson in his final role, and he makes this movie a real gem. His final scene, with Orange as his favorite color, is an unforgettable moment and Heston plays brilliantly off it. Also, Brock Peters as his Police Lieutenant is very good, and was a friend of Hestons who appeared in 2 other of his movies including Major Dundee, a vastly underrated western. But with several novelties, and without too many special effects, this movie is pure sci-fi by the acting and the story, and the final sequence. LINCOLN KILPATRICK as the Priest is the other supporting Gem. The blank expression and horror at the truth he heard show clearly on his face, and is one of those unforgettable moments. But this is one of Heston's best roles, and he plays a sweating, clever cop of the future with no inkling of the beauty that was earth of the past perfectly.

Great Movie from beginning to Sad End
16 November 2016
This was a Great Movie. It is a special kind of movie that grabs you by the soul and forces you to like Monty, the drug dealer. The entire film builds to the ending and every step of the way is fraught with interesting scenes, emotions, script, and above all so many Great MOMENTS. That is what sticks with you after you turn it off. The acting is superior, and Edward Norton is at his best in the lead. Some great support from Rosario Dawson especially, and then (of course) Philip Seymour Hoffman and Barry Pepper. Spikes fixture Isiah Whitlock as Agent Flood is perfect. Anna Paquin is dreamy as Mary who is just discovering her sexuality in a most satisfying pair of sequences. And Brian Cox puts in his best as Monty's Father, and he contributes much more than you think at first. I love this movie, and hate it. Spike gives us his best here and it's filled with NYC references and special scenes as well that only a New Yorker can really appreciate but all will enjoy. It's NOT an uplifting film, but a real human experience.

Forgotten Disney adventure underrated but worth a view
16 November 2016
For a Disney movie, this was above average in conception and execution. The Balloon vehicle provides very interesting plot twists. The lead actors aren't top stars except Mako in a good support role as an eskimo guide, but they all turn in good performances that stand above normal campy Disney fare. The French pilot and English Expedition head clash most enjoyably. And there is a comic mascot. There are several true villains and they battle weather elements as well. This is not a great film, but for Disney it stands out and is a satisfying adventure flick with typical Disney ending. All the elements are there and even the music is good.

A Christmas Carol (1999 TV Movie)

2nd Best Version of Dickens Classic
16 November 2016
This is the 2nd best version of A Christmas Carol, right behind the George C Scott version. I always watch both every Christmas, but I have to choose one as best. However, nothing about this version is disappointing and it is worth watching twice. Stewart does a very good job as Scrooge, and the supporting cast is excellent. Ian McNeice as Fezziwig is Great (none better), and Richard Grant as Bob Crachit is Great (none better, tie with David Warner) with Saskia Reeves doing very good as Mrs Crachit, and Dominic West as Fred is Great (almost as good as roger rees). This version has many scenes missing from the others that gives it the most Dickensian flavor. The special effects are up to modern standards and add that element missing from prior versions. A great TV movie and one of Stewarts finest works.

A Christmas Carol (1984 TV Movie)
10/10
BEST version of Dickens Book
16 November 2016
This is the best version of A Christmas Carol. While the Patrick Stewart version is more faithful to the book, this has a better supporting cast by far. Edward Woodward is GREAT as the ghost of Christmas past (none better), and David Warner makes a rare appearance as a Good Guy in the role of Bob Crachit and is GREAT(none better), and Susanna York as Mrs Crachit is excellent, Frank Finlay as Marley was Very Good (none better), but Roger Rees (Cheers fame)as nephew Fred is Fantastic (none better). The Tiny Tim (often a sticking point) is Very Good in appearance and saying his lines, and doesn't disappoint. The rest are very good, and GC Scott was born to play Scrooge, as NO other actor makes you believe they are a nasty, stingy miser like Scott does. The moment of Transformation to good is done well, and the scenes afterward are excellent. The payoff is very satisfying in this version - above or equal to all others. So this one gets the 10 based the number of Great Actors & performances, and Top Scrooge.

Good, quirky Christmas fare
16 November 2016
As Christmas movies go, this is a very good one. I always try and watch my favorites during the holidays, and this is one. The main character is very likable, but flawed and Steven Weber as Calvin does an excellent job driving the flick. The supporting cast is well above average as well. Molly Shannon stands out, and so does Patricia Velasquez as the BiG Business WOMAN from South America that represents BiG $ if handled well. Calvin has an interesting family dynamic as well, with siblings, children, and a father with Alzheimer's onset. The music is excellent as well, setting the tone for this offbeat Christmas film. I laughed many times and the payoff at the End, a MUST for Christmas flicks, was very satisfying.
