I Trapped the Devil (2019)
Worth watching
While I understand critics not loving this movie, for any horror fan, I feel it's worth watching. Atmospheric and eery, it's basicslly a good story of trust and the devil. Not much gore, but I think enjoyed the overall experience.
Rape For Profit (2012)
Powerful Message but Possibly the Wrong way to Delivery it
There is no doubt the message is strong in Rape For Profit. It lets abused women share their brutal stories and allows the viewer to share in a small part of their pain. The movie is shot well and sends a pretty clear message that the problem has many reasons this "profession" continues.
However, I must admit that I found it strange the writer/director is so involved in confronting the women and men involved in this story. Standing along side police, he forcefully confronts the characters, at times, roughly and intensely sharing his view. I have always believed that a great documentary allows the footage and interviews to get the message across, rather than the writer him or herself interjecting their personal views so loudly.
This of course leads me to my disapproval of his position. The movie clearly states that powerful men or men desiring that power are the key abusers of women, yet the director in his powerful role often finds himself alone with a abused minor basically telling her what she should be feeling, rather than asking her what SHE is feeling. "You are happier here now!" "This is much better for you!" While he may be correct in his assessment, I think it would have been a smarter move to have a female, who is educated in counseling abused women to speak with these girls, rather than potentially exploit them for, what appears to be, camera time.
I want to stress that I believe the movie and this particular directors' heart appear to be in the right place. I just wish he would have stepped out of the frame more often to allow the actual story to be told by those who lived it.
Silver Bullets (2011)
I Want My Money/Time Back
You don't have to worry about me writing a spoiler in this review. There is nothing to spoil. I rented this movie based on three glowing reviews - of whom, if I had the time, I would write to and personally to complain. But, I rented it and here is my review:
The main characters are, in my opinion, the three hipster friends that decided to make this movie. Meaning I doubt little work went into finding actors outside their local dive bar. In this movie, the two male actors are directors - one with an ego and one that can be described as wanting an ego but not confident enough to have one - quite yet. The female actor is a shy, quiet cute girl with no personality who loves her hair. Since I do not know any of these actors in person, nor have I ever seen an interview, the boring, monotone delivery of lines may be what they were going for.
The shy director and the young girl are boyfriend/girlfriend. She gets a role working for the egotistical director. This causes tension. And I won't go any further than that in the description, as I am a sadist and would prefer you to witness the story (lack of story) unfold for yourselves.
I found myself feeling trapped at a loft in Brooklyn with young faces with beards and pretty girls with no personalities but pretty features. This movie made me wonder how movies are picked up and distributed. I am sure the actor, director, or producer was friends with the three reviewers that gave the movie such great reviews.
If you decide to watch this, I suggest you sucker a friend into renting it on their dime and you offer to bring the beers.
