Peppa Pig (2004)
One of the best kid's shows ever...
It seems that you either love or hate Peppa Pig. Me and my children just happen to love this one! The best thing in this is the sense of humor. There are many scenes where I find myself laughing out loud. Most of the jokes seem to be more for the adult audience. But although it's not that kind of 'ha ha' funny for the children, they seem to enjoy it anyway. I also love the jokes because they often are just mundane everyday things from a life with a family with children. I find myself thinking "Haha this is just like from our life!"
Another very good aspect of this show is that it's not very fast. I hate that many kid's shows these days are full of fast paced action. I don't think it is good for the brain of small children when the lights flash all the time and there is ten things going on at the same. This world is way too fast for all of us these days, so it's nice to have something a bit slow, especially for Kids.
Many complain that children in this show are awful and it teaches no morales. Well I think these children are just children, quite realistic. And the parents in the show stay calm and often in tough places take it with a sense of humour. That's what I admire and often in my life wish I could do the same. Not every show needs to have exact lessons for children about right or wrong. Sometimes it's nice to have just some simple innocent entertainment. Only downside in Peppa Pig is the fatshaming of Daddy Pig, which is not funny nor acceptable.
Stowaway (2021)
Quite great movie
I wouldn't say this was the best film ever nor perfect, but I liked it very much. It was atmospheric, beautiful and tense. Yes, it was quite slow and not too much action, but I think that was good. Nice actors and I liked the story too although many seem to think it was worst ever.
Many reviews complain about plotholes or how implausible the story is. I don't get this nor how can so many people hate this movie and rate is as 1? First of all, are there any Hollywood films in action/ horror/scifi genres that don't have any momets where you think 'what was that, how is that possible. Or stupid choice.' That's part of films. Make some solutions that are not realistic just for the sake of plot or simply by mistake.
It seemed to be a huge turn-off for many that they never revealed why or how the stowaway ended up in there. I think it wasn't important. This movie was not about it rather than what happens because of that. And yes, it was weird that he was there, unlikely that nobody noticed, even if he was put there intentionally. However not impossible.
They were not able to turn back, because they didn't have enough fuel. The ship was designed for two hence the problems with oxygen after that machine broke down. Human error could also explain some things (and I don't mean moviemakers errors) eg when she came down with the oxygen and dropped it. She was a doctor in panic situation, in a hurry, doing something she was not primarily supposed to be doing. I think it is quite realistic that instead of succeeding she fails.
This was not perfect, but very good film and had to give 10 to compensate those 1's.
The Nightmare (2015)
Very creepy but not too informative
First I have to say that this was definitely one of the scariest films I have ever seen. Actually I wish I did not see this at all... Don't watch it if you are sensitive. I like horror movies and thrillers and so on, but this one gave me a few sleepless nights.
The reason why I gave so poor rating is that this was not at all what I thought it was supposed to be. I was waiting for an informative documentary on sleep paralysis. Instead I got a bunch of scary stories on what sleep paralysis is for some people. And these were probably the worst cases. No scientific information what it is, no professional interviews etc. or solutions or anything good to show of this phenomenon. After watching a documentary I would like to know something more, now I know just that sleep paralysis is very very scary. This should have been marked as horror instead of documentary.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Is writing a review harder than making meth?
Honestly I have to say that this is the best TV-series I have ever seen. I simply can't find a fault in it. The story is very interesting and it is developing so well and after all it is even quite plausible.
Walter White is great, as well as Jesse Pinkman, and there is nothing bad to say about the other characters either. This whole being quiet thing though remains as a question; for me as a Scandinavian it is OK and natural, but I have always thought that the Americans are just not capable of that. But perhaps it really is like that in a professional drug business, no empty words are said or nothing unnecessary. In a way I just love this mysteria this creates, people come and go, some even keeping themselves totally unknown. Everything is not explained and totally covered like in some series.
What I especially love is how these characters develop. From the beginning to the close of end it is sometimes hard to even imagine them to be the same actors, same characters. But in the end that is how it goes in real life too; someone you used to know five years ago might not be at all the same... People change so quickly, especially under the pressure.
Ils (2006)
Scary as an old empty house
For me this was a seriously scary thing to watch. I have to admit that it's a long time since anything was so scary as "Ils" was. It might be that I saw it in TV and the description said something like "a couple meets supernatural encounters". So from the beginning I was very open- minded, ready for any kind of monsters, aliens etc.
"Ils" begins very well. my first thought was that should I even watch this; what is this, Romanian or what, can it even be good. But then I just continued and after a while could not stop. I even had to turn on a light in my living room. The house itself was scary, and these hallway settings scared me a lot. Maybe it helps that I have seen nightmares from a house like that for last 20 years. But at least for me it really worked out. Of course the characters made some stupid moves, but who has seen a horror film without anything stupid, besides how else would it even work. Though not many of us have been in such situations so perhaps it better for the critics to be quiet.
For certain this is worth of watching. The less you know, more scarier it is. Some reviewers complained about bad crew, techniques, filming, etc.; well maybe I'm not enough expert to understand, but for me these factors were not a hindrance at all.
Antichrist (2009)
A little bit like a bad mushroom trip
Yes, this is a disturbing film. Not scary but quite disturbing and oppressive. This is not your choice if you're looking for ordinary blood shedding and gore. This is quite slow and depressing movie; definitely not a happy one. It seems to go from bad to even worse. But I like this feeling how it is like a bad psychedelic trip when the first catch of bad comes it can go only worse, unless you're a master of minds like the guy in this movie is.
One thing I have to say is that this is much more the scene I like and understand than these nowadays so popular gore-torture films. What is actually scary in gore? Yes of course it is scary if you happen to be the actual victim, but otherwise...? This film is a good counterbunch for these American horrors where naked woman is a really bad and censored thing, unless the woman is dead and on the operating table. Isn't it actually more natural to show some skin on living beings than dead ones - I wonder? For some this Antichrist might be too much because it is not entertaining at all, it is mostly disturbing and sometimes beautiful, but not entertaining.
For those who really love those "eew" moments and perhaps some mental fear/disgust and who are also bored with all these Hostel/Saw settings.
Miesten vuoro (2010)
After watching this I miss sauna too...
This is a great film, not an entertaining one, but a moving one. And I guess it will not open so well for people other than those who are from Finland or nearby...
All this public nudity might be offending, especially when the people pictured are not Playboy models or the most handsome Hollywood stars. But this is because one have to understand that in Finnish sauna there is no nudity. People are naked, but in the eyes of those people it actually does not make any difference to that if they would be clothed. Sauna is sort of holy place where everyone is equal and where even men can vent their feelings, although otherwise it often is very difficult. And you can also open up to strangers, persons you have never met before and perhaps will never see after that. And that is what this film depicts very well; normally mostly introverted men share their deepest emotions in front of other people, naked, and in front of camera.
Also with all these sceneries and exotic inventive sauna settings this is a good summary of Finland and the people who life there. This summaries the whole mentality of the country.
I myself am a Finn living abroad and in troubled situations I really miss sauna, where I could really get into my deepest thoughts. In fact while sitting in my dark room and watching this film I could also imagine that I myself am there with these guys, hearing them and sharing my own problems in the nice heat of sauna. Guess I have to start searching for flight tickets right after this...
Neds (2010)
Good film about bad problems
First I have to admit that one reason that made this film more appealing for me was that at the moment I live in Glasgow, right in the area, where the film was filmed and here the "neds" are a part of daily life, only in different uniforms that in 70's. So to say, if living elsewhere I would not find this film as interesting as now. How ever it is still quite good movie.
Some say that the language is difficult. Probably yes, if you are not glaswegian. Though even I understood almost everything with a background of three years in Glasgow (English is not my native language).
Surprisingly there were even a few moments when everybody laughed (I was not expecting comedy), but still it was not awkward. Few shocking moments, but no unnecessary gore. Though it might have been good to show little bit more the gruesome results of stabbings as it feels here, and in that movie too that sadly many of these young "neds" do not even realise the fact that knife can kill and is not a toy.
The characters are a little bit hollow. In Neds everything just is how it is, some further explanation and reasons would be really fruitful. I would have appreciated some deeper view of the main characters thoughts and reasons for his actions. I was looking for some explanation to the whole ned-culture, gang fights and meaningless violence. From this movie I learnt only that things were the same in Glasgow 40 years ago.
