Modern Filmmaking on a Classic Story
5 April 2023
This production is much better than many of the reviews posted here, and is of a high quality I think a lot of reviewers ignored to complain about what they think they should have seen.

I took from this production a way of showing the Dickens story in a way that showcases many modern film techniques, which is refreshing. The director and team stayed consistent with their tone and approach, holding a dim and moody tone very well.

Worth mentioning is the near flawless filming, audio lighting and sets. This show looks incredible start to finish.

Now I recognize this is a dry show (which again, likely the director's vision) and its pacing is slow. It's better watched as a moody film student might rather than someone looking for a good time.

Try to watch this with an artistic eye, without comparing it to previous Great Expectations productions.

Apex Legends (2019 Video Game)

Best In Class FPS BR
10 April 2021
All other battle royale games in 2021 feel like a potato in mud.

Apex Legends is well balanced, smooth and fast, and evolving into the premiere FPS it was made to be. Mechanics like sliding and wall riding make this game so creative and expressive, all at sometimes blinding speed.

Games like PUBG and Warzone simply cannot generate the adrenaline that Apex demands, too much looting, too much plodding around. Decent players in Apex are good to go in about 1 min, and hunting other squads is key to rank hard and fast.

It's free, on all platforms and in no way pay-to-win, a first time player with no money can dominate the ranks if they play well.

Be wary of negative reviews that are older, much has been done to perfect the game since it was created, and the intensity of the scenarios and situations just keeps getting better.

Less than the sum of its parts
25 February 2021
A plot that's been done 100s of times can't be saved by acting that tries to bring it some life.

While there's nothing wrong with telling an old story, the writing and pace of this film, simple camera and lackluster audio make the overall experience predictable.

To its credit, it does tell a story, and makes it through an awkward script...

The Core Message
25 January 2021
Just as no director has ever successfully nailed Dune in its scope and expression, so too Huxley's Brave New World is a daunting story that cannot ever be fully worked into film. Maybe if it was 17 hours long... Maybe.

So to recognize this production's strengths is to see the novel's core ideas out forward in a way we can all appreciate.

Fundamentally it checks all the right boxes. Discovery of one's own humanity. Expression of the human spirit and self awareness. Confronting our infinite flaws and weakness. The love of self and each other. Totalitarian politics and the conflict of the individual.

Put forth with quality acting and a banger soundtrack, incredible costume and set design, it's simply solid. The show takes the time to allow all these aspects to shine, rarely if ever rushing dialog or pushing visuals without ensuring the mood and tone is set properly.

It seems many reviews here are focused on the undeniable fact that the show doesn't share much with the book. To that I simply say, this show is what the book is about, not its details but it's message.

Slow and Awkward is the Point?
15 September 2019
Imagine if you hated zombie movies, and wanted to express how you feel through a film. For a movie that has stars and a capable director it is difficult to enjoy, and I am left guessing that is the entire point.

To give it some credit is difficult but I can say this. The film's theme song is actually listenable, and it certainly is different than any other zombie film out there.

Smarter Than You Think

This movie has a lot of comedy, but it actually has a lot of humanity in it as well.

There are many moments throughout that give real insight into the characters, and ourselves. If you watch carefully, you will find that many scenes are bitter sweet and perhaps hit too close to home.

Within Brooks classic framework of his films, this one has the most true drama. And it's full of cheeky humor.

Awkward Even for Brooks
31 March 2019
This film has all the tongue-in-cheek gags and witty dialogue you can expect from Mel Brooks, but the slow delivery and lengthy plot (yes there is one) make this a squirmish experience.

Even if the viewer is familiar with the parody of Hitchcock films, it's a hard one to watch.

The all around production is good for its time, and the orchestration is worth a nod, as the film's score is strong.

A must watch for all Brooks fans like me, but not a top 5 in my humble opinion.

Strong acting and good camera work made this watchable, very believable characters and a plot that was well connected helped this nearly actionless film along significantly.

Satirical Romp
31 March 2019
Mel Brooks in full swing with a fast paced blast through significant historical time periods. Loosely held together by a cliche plot, this film is everything you can expect from a Brooks film.

You will learn nothing from this movie, but you will probably laugh.

Classic Style with Modern Quality
30 March 2019
This is a "traditional" styled kung fu movie, much like the 70s classics we all know and love.

It is done very well, and hold true to its genre. Everything from dialogue to plot and dynamics is directed and filmed in this way, and the acting is perfect for classic kung fu.

Holes and Gaps
30 March 2019
Good acting and a well thought out story Make this film a solid watch for a Netflix evening.

It does however blast through certain plot points and skip other story aspects entirely. At 2 hours this is understandable, but it certainly doesn't improve anything.

The footage at times is staggering, and with very professional camera work for all scenes, I'm sure many would enjoy this film with the sound off. Seriously, it looks great.

A Pedestrian Walk Through a Tragedy
27 March 2019
A terrible historical tragedy told smoothly but slowly. Mediocre acting (the writing surely to blame more than the actors) and flat simple camera work leaves this film with a bland effect.

It is however respectful to the families and victims of the attack, and is a strong enough reminder of the events. I can imagine it is hard to not sensationalize or exaggerate a story like this, and I feel all aspects of the production were tastefully done.

A Well Written Story and Performance
19 March 2019
Very natural acting and dialogue make this film a solid story about real people in an apocalypse situation.

It has a slower pace and less action than most zombie movies, which in all honesty gives the overall feel of this film a sense of maturity, giving it plenty of room for character development.

Strong Acting and Production for a Slow Story
3 March 2019
A sci-fi eco drama backboned by dialogue and mature filming. For whatever it's not, IO delivers a moody story with well paced character and setting development. After reading many reviews here, I think a lot of people missed the simple fact that this film was about the people, not the situation.

A Mature and Solemn Approach
27 December 2018
A fresh look at a famous murder case, Lizzie allows viewers to speculate beyond what we already know from the history.

This film has a sophisitacted pace, that I felt the scenes required in order to portray the characters and story effectively. Some reviewers here felt it slow, I think it needed to be slow.

Excellent setting, great costume and time period appropriate touches. Great sense of lighting, framing and tone throughout the film.

Where it falls short is in its dialog, short and uninteresting, and in its supporting character development. It could have used a few more scenes of life in the house, while chopping a few that gave viewers no connection to the household members.

Served by an excellent minimal score, Lizzie gives a sense of realism that is lacking in many bio and historical films today.
