Perseverance over the seas
11 September 2022
I thought this was really quite dull overall. It's hardly an original story and I got quite bored mid way through. The characters are nice enough but it's pretty predictable and didn't really 'grab' me. I suppose the script is fairly decent, there are some fairly poignant pieces of dialogue, though there are other times when little is said at all and there's not much content there...I guess it could move some people, it is sad to see how things change but I didn't find it exactly surprising or anything. The performances are good but it's pretty slow, plot pace wise. If anything appealed to me about it, I'd say its the technology aspect - relying on the internet, Google street view, photos etc. For her to convey what she's seeing and doing, is interesting. I suppose after the COVID19 lockdowns, people have been forced to rely on technology to stay in touch with others. I didn't mind that part of the story but I wouldn't say this film is primarily about the power or ability of technology to maintain a relationship alone. It's only a part of it, if that makes any sense. It's thoughtful but I think it's a bit too sparse for my liking really. I imagine some may regard it as quietly devastating but I'm not sure I really felt that, personally. I can see what they were getting at though.

Overall I wouldn't recommend it as such, no.

A surprisingly amusing Adam Sandler watch
27 February 2019
I found this film relatively amusing, for an Adam Sandler film. Most of the time I cringe at his films but I thought that Adam and Drew Barrymore had a good on screen chemistry, their good at playing the visual slapstick, exaggeratedly over the top/hyper single parents. I'd heard this was quite good, the 2nd film to feature Adam and Drew as the two main leads since '50 First Dates' which I also thought wasn't too bad.

Its an easy watch, pretty basic comedy as you might expect. The comedy is pretty zany and there's definitely a, as I say, hyperactive element to it. Its hardly greatly memorable but as an easy piece of cheap entertainment, its not awful. I thought it was surprisingly watchable and so I'm going for a 4 star rate, although I realise that it won't appeal to everyone. If you like the sound of this film and are ok with somewhat zany, exaggerated characters, a bit of cheese and basic visual comedy then I'd recommend this.

A Wonder-ful film
16 February 2019
I knew the basic story of Wonder before I saw it and I assumed it was aimed at kids but I think its the kind of film that works well for both kids and adults. There's certainly a fair amount of food for thought, as it were. Unsurprisingly, it is quite sad and sentimental, although I'm glad to say that I didn't feel it was unnecessarily piled in sugary sweet emotions - it focusses on the childs difficulties starting at a public school and his reaction to being made fun of for his looks. I suppose it is perhaps a little predictable but I thought that it wasn't as tacky as it perhaps could have come across and also I thought that the main cast did pretty well in their respective roles, especially Jacob Tremblay as the main character, August aka Auggie and Julia Roberts as his mum. It deals with bullying, fear/shame and so on - important topics for adolescents certainly.

Would I recommend it? yes I would.

A decent modern Western watch
10 February 2019
I found this film tense and gripping, with slick gun fight scenes that were well choreographed. There's nice cinematography with some good aerial shots of the landscape.

The background music was judged well - it wasn't too loud or overbearing, nor was it lacking.

I thought it was an engrossing and atmospheric watch for the most part. However, there was the ocassional cliched accent which I didn't like too much but otherwise, its a good tense watch. Some of the plot details were perhaps slightly simplistic but that aside I very much enjoyed it. Would I recommend it? yes I would - its not perfect but its pretty decent. Also, I haven't seen the original film, so I can't comment on it in terms of it being a remake.

A thoughtful film
5 February 2019
I liked this film primarily for the thoughtful dialogue and the fact the plot line is mostly quite subtle - it doesn't feature anything ludicrous happening and the two main characters seem pretty laidback and so it just seems to flow quite well, as an interesting romantic drama type film. Given the American character is in Europe, I suppose I could compare aspects of the plot (thematically) to Lost in Translation, which is another great film about feeling somewhat lost and lonely. I wouldn't say the two main characters in this film are expressly lonely per se but there did feel (to me) to be that element of isolation and companionship of course. It is somewhat philosophical in tone - a somewhat deep film, moreso than a lot of the not so memorable romantic comedies. There are discussions about death, dreams and religion and the characters share some of their secrets.

Would I recommend it? yes, definitely. It gets two thumbs up from me, although if your not at all keen on gentle, slow films (plot pace wise) or romance type watches then this may not appeal to you.

An Engrossing Historical Watch if not 100% accurate
5 February 2019
I found this to be quite an engrossing watch. It may not (pretty much certainly isn't) entirely historically accurate/factual but it features good performances from the main cast and some impressive settings and so its watchable from that point of view. I thought it was quite gripping in the scenes featuring both of the distant warring family members and I thought it featured some rather impressive examples of cinematography. Also, I thought David Tennant gave a quite powerful performance, even though you don't see him much as such but moreso in terms of his speeches heard by a crowd of people on more than one ocassion. I feel his voice is instantly recognisable and I'd say him and Saoirse Ronan gave the most memorable performances, although Margot Robbie pulls her weight too. Elements of the plot may be a bit fanciful but I found it quite a gripping and interesting watch regardless.

Also, I feel I can't review it without mentioning that there are some sex scenes and partial nudity present. It would be a slightly awkward watch for younger people if with parents and it did add a bit of a salacious element to it, which perhaps wasn't entirely necessary but for the most part its a gripping watch.

A slow watch about trust and family dynamics
27 January 2019
This is quite a slow burner, plot pace wise. Its mostly about family dynamics and trust. It took a while for me to feel especially interested in the characters but I thought it was somewhat of a powerful watch by the time it headed towards the end and I would say it may make you think.

If your not keen on character focussed dramas then this won't be for you. Also of course you likely have to rely on the subtitles, as its in Danish, although I was pleased to see that the subtitles were quite large in terms of text size, compared to other films with smaller subtitles, so if anything it was slightly less of an issue than it might have been. I felt sorry for the wife Anna and I did find myself wondering what might happen next, as things moved on plot wise but it is, as I say, a relatively slow burner, so don't expect fast paced action or anything of that sort. Its a reasonably intriguing watch and overall I suppose I'd say its a good watch, hence my rating.

A diverting watch, if a little cliched
20 January 2019
This film is an easy and fairly diverting watch, although its certainly cliched. The Russian accents made me cringe a bit and the plot was unbelievable - of course thats to be expected to an extent but I found myself unsure quite how the plot had arrived at the point it had, perhaps mid way through.

There is the usual what could be called 'countdown, hurry hurry!' fast music played to try to increase the tension - its not by any means unwatchable but it didn't quite work for me entirely. Its certainly not a memorable film but, as I say, its diverting enough to pass time if your bored - it could be a fair bit better but I suppose it could be worse, hence my rating.

A Jolly Amusing Watch!
20 January 2019
This is a quite hyperactive, wacky spoof type comedy film. The characters seem somewhat comic strip-esque and the comedy is very much visual, slapstick in style. The story is pretty ludicrous (but of course!) but I guess thats where some of the fun and entertainment comes from, that its not entirely predictable. It reminded me a little of films such as The Naked Gun,Hot Shots or Johnny English, in terms of the action sequences, action mixed with comedy.

I liked how it pokes fun at the upper classes, although the obvious sexism present didn't surprise me but maybe wasn't ideal...there again perhaps its having a go at that aspect of other such, non-comedic films?. Its a pretty daft but quite entertaining and amusing watch, so I'd recommend it on that basis, although it is a little saucy, with some offensive language and mild sexual scenes/content, so its not suitable for young children to see. I thought the choreography of the fight scenes was quite good and there are some quite witty lines present in the dialogue.

There are some pretty big names present in the cast, including Britt Ekland and Bob Hoskins, plus Alastair Sim, Joss Ackland and Malcolm McDowell. Due to this, I'm surprised the film isn't more well known - I certainly hadn't heard of it until I noticed the TV channel Talking Pictures mention it on social media. I enjoyed it as a film and would recommend it to others.

A Thoughtful Film About Social and Moral Conscience
19 January 2019
I found this film a decent watch. The pace is a little slow in parts and towards the end, it has a darker tone to it and becomes somewhat thought provoking, due to what comes to light. It made me think about the consequences of things that people end up involved in - there's definitely a strong element of social morality and conscience. There's an allegorical side to it, with the film set on a seemingly somewhat idyllic island, when there are some less than lovely things going on. Nothing awful - just a bit grim and we learn about peoples recollections of history and the like. I liked that it had, ultimately, a sense of optimism - something we could do with more of, frankly.

From a film perspective, I enjoyed seeing Helen Mirren in a film from the late 80s (which this is). I hadn't seen her in many roles from over 2 decades ago - thats why I decided to watch this film. The music isn't too 'in your face' I'd say, its perhaps a little over sentimentalised maybe, but only just - it certainly didn't put me off the film to any large extent. It also pushes home the optimistic elements of the story, which was nice. Overall I'd say its worth a watch.

An Amusing Nostalgic Film - worth a watch
13 January 2019
I found this film a gentle comedy - it was quite funny, in a nostalgic way. The story was interesting and the characters quirky. I found it a very good watch. My favourite character was Mrs. Fazackalee, who is often referred to and I found myself giggling at the mention of her name, possibly due to the tone used when it was said?. Its hard to fully review this film other than to say its an old British comedy from the late 1950s and I enjoyed the story, finding it funny at numerous points, with an interesting variety of quirky characters - it has one or two morals about it which I liked and I would happily recommend this film to others.

A Thought Provoking Tale of Isolation and Companionship
13 January 2019
This is a film all about isolation and companionship. It is relatively slow in terms of plot pace but I thought it was quite contemplative, a good character based film and so I wasn't entirely bothered by the slowish plot pace. You could almost argue that its like a form of mindfulness in a film, with Charley being fairly quiet and thoughtful. We learn a fair bit about other people who work on the farmland and with the horses.

The sense of wilderness is quite sobering. Also the lack of dialogue at times made it seem quite poignant to me. Overall its an interesting, observation/character based drama which I enjoyed quite a lot.

Would I recommend it? Yes, I'd happily recommend this film, as long as you know its not fast paced or action packed. For what it is, its a very good film.
