Nukie (1987)
I will watch anything, but with this I lost the will to live
Seriously, this is beyond comprehension, bad. There is not enough alcohol in the world to make me endure this again. My favourite bad movie is Rawhead Rex (its bad..) but it is Citizen Kane in comparison to this....aaaaagh.
Rawhead Rex (1986)
Funny B-movie with added bonus to Irish viewers
This is an hilarious horror flick, if you like bad movies and especially if you remember Glenroe et al from the 80's..its a veritable spot the face. I loved the fact that the 'bad' priest was church of Ireland, another classic Irish touch.
I found this really amusing, as I love this sort of bad movie. You'll never look at a fairy fort or ring fort the same way after seeing this!
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
I had the pleasure of seeing this as it should be seen
This movie deserves all its praises and more. I feel very privilidged that I got to see it in a 1920's film theatre at a film festival 4 yrs ago, with an iridescent print, as close to the original silver nitrate print as possible, with a live orchestra performing Carl Davis' new(ish) score. George O' Brien was a wonderfuly delicate silent actor, and Janet Gaynor is magnificent. Close to a religious experience, is how I would describe seeing it, but that sounds over the top, doesn't it?
The Dawn (1936)
Labour of love for cinema fan Thomas Cooper
This is the first full length sound movie made in Ireland. The director, Cooper, was the owner of the local cinema. The actors were indeed mostly involved in the war of independance they depict on screen, and happily, one of those was my grandfather. on initial inspection it is rather an amatuer film, yet it surpasses its budget constraints, such as they were, ie: no budget. The effort put into making this film is the stuff of legend in the killarney area. for any film history buffs out there, who may care, killarney was a center for Irish film in the 1910's and 1920's when the 'kalem' company with sidney olcott (canadian director)made many movies there. olcott is probably best remembered for his 1912 "From the Manger to the cross" the first movie based on the life of christ.
