Black Devil Doll (2007)
Could have been so much movie
When I first heard about this movie, I was expecting a movie up to par with the 1984 "classic"! Sadly this movie has little to do with Chester Novell Turner's movie.
The plot follows a young women (a very busty and attractive one) who is bored and decides to play with wedgie board (spelled wrong). This brings back the soul of a 1960s black panther inside of the doll.
That is basically the plot. The movie it's self very unfunny. The problem is the writer's attempt to be controversial without an real sense of humor. I feel like the movie was written by 13 year olds, especially with all the homophobic humor and nudity. Even if you view this with the notion of it being one of those movies so bad it is good, then you are out of luck. The original film is one of those movies. This is not, because there is not enough bad material to have that mark. It is also surprising slow at some parts.
Not really worth a watch, just go see the original if you really want a good laugh!
Transamerica (2005)
Great film in all aspects!
I saw Transamreica in one of those discount shops. I saw the little Sundance icons and decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did.
Without giving to much away the story follows a Transvestite who is one step away from getting that important "operation". All she needs is her therapist to sign a sheet of paper. She gets a phone call from her long forgotten son, who is in jail for possessions of drugs. Her therapist says the only way she will sign the paper of approval is if she comes at peace with her son.
After this point the movie turns into heartwarming, road-trip type movie. Felicity Huffman and Kevin Zegers have a very real and heartfelt relationship that you can see grow. Speaking of Felicity Huffman...WOW! I was blown away at how amazing she was in this movie. I had never seen any off her work aside from her work on television. This shows what amazing range she has and I wish she would do more work like this. Kevin Zegers is really great as well and manages to hold his own against Huffman.
This this the first film from Writer-Director Duncan Tucker and what a debut. The only problem I have with this film is a personal one. There is a scene with Huffman and Zegers characters that is very hard to watch and not in a good way. It feels unnecessarily added in. Overall a very nice slice of life film, my favorite type of movies by the way.
9/10
Adam and Eve (2005)
Not an National Lampoon film
If you are going into this film expecting a comedy, you'll get minimal laughs, if your expecting a decent romance, then you get even less romance. This film contains the lowest of low humor. I would call it toilet humor, but it isn't even graphic enough the get a reaction out of me. There is very little nudity in this film (if at all I can't really remember), which surprised my considering it is a national lampoon film. The film story is a simple one, a virgin dates a collage frat boy (all of whom are at least in their late 20s or early 30s by the way) and is pressured by him to have sex. He cheats and gets an std, she finds out etc. It is all pretty boring and has been done better but even a bad story can have some entertainment value. Sadly this is no existent. The frat's guys friend are very annoying. It's like the script directors wanted these characters to be funny, but couldn't think of anything other then gross out joke's.
The only character worth interest is the main female protagonist. You wonder why she is dating such an ass. There is a scene towards the end of the movie where she finds out something one of her parents did year's ago and freaks out on them. It was uncalled for and unnecessary in this scene. The acting is pretty awful in this film as shown by the main male "protagonist". I put that in quotes, because by the end of the film you well hate this character. There is a character named Patty who I found sort of interesting. I would have preferred seeing a movie about her.
So to conclude, the characters are crap, the story is a story we have seen all the time and the acting is pretty awful. The direction of this film is pretty okay and I have seen worse. At least I haven't seen any boom mike's or any camera's reflected through mirrors or windows. To bad it is wasted on a film shot on a digital camera. One can just feel the cheapness. I can't believe this yields the national Lampoon seal of approval.
