Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
Five Minutes at Willy's Wonderland Beats Five Nights of This Disappointing Adaptation.
My kids and I decided to have a stay-at-home Halloween party last night, and we streamed the latest thrill from Blumhouse. The best part of the evening was listening to my kids moan and groan about how boring the movie was, and kids don't lie. I personally struggled to stay awake throughout the majority of the film, and while I was watching the amazing cast of characters trying to get through the plot holes that Freddy's had to offer, I was wondering if the folks at Blumhouse were intentionally releasing films that had no rewatch value. Last year, "Halloween Ends" was a misstep for the brand, and "The Exorcist: Believer" was another good idea gone Green. Granted, the best parts of the film were happening when the gang was playing their musical instruments and dancing around the restaurant, although moments like that only lasted so long. My kids are 8 and 3, and by the time the end credits started rolling, they had begged me to shut down the program. Needless to say, it was an interesting evening. Personally, I'm giving the film 5 stars for the effects, the cast, and the music. I wish Uwe Boll would have made this film, He would have made it better.
Far Out Man (1990)
Far Out Fun!
If you're a fan of Cheech & Chong, then there's no need to make a big deal over Tommy Chong's solo comedy effort. This film debuted in the early '90's when stoner comedies like "Flashback" and "Rude Awakening" were coming to pass. With Tommy Chong's "Far Out Man" though, you get the real deal. Tommy Chong is the ultimate stoner who "awakens" in a new decade and he's just as lost as he was in the '70's. This film is a really fun watch and only gets funnier every time I watch it. Featuring numerous cameos from some of the greats like Martin Mull, Fernando Rey (who's a real gem in this film) and Tommy's own daughter Rae Dawn and real life wife Shelby! The songs were also a real standout in this film, not to mention the cool animated sequence for Hippyland! Growing up with these guys' party records and listening to "Up In Smoke" countless times at age 10, I was wishing I could have seen this one on the big screen. I had to wait almost two years before obtaining a copy on VHS, which I still own, and hope to see this film resurface on the Blu-ray format sometime. If you'd like to sit down with a fan commentary, I'm available Tommy!
