Noelle (2019)
An underwhelming experience
Well, that was lame! The story came off as disjointed. Everyone, barring Anna Kendrick, seemed disinterested (in a rather emotional moment, there is a shot of Bill Hader looking distractedly at the floor). The CGI, especially that CGI calf or whatever, looked terrible! Anna Kendrick gives it her best and I do appreciate the progressive message. But overall it was
an underwhelming experience. Watch it if you have some time to kill. Otherwise, avoid.
A Summer Story (1988)
A Movie to Remember
I thought I was the only one who remembers A Summer Story. I cannot believe this movie is not more widely known. This should be regarded as a classic. I watched A Summer Story nearly a decade ago. I was barely in my teens then, just beginning to understand the mysteries of this world. This is one of the first movies that truly touched me. I didn't understand all of it but understood enough to lie awake the whole night crying into my pillow. The next morning my mom asked me if there was anything the matter with me because my eyes were all red and puffy from crying. I am glad to know that I am not the only one who cried after watching it. And the final scene! My heart aches even now when I think of it. If anyone doesn't cry after that final moment they must be made out of stone! True, my memory of A Summer Story maybe tinted with the rosy glow of yesterday but from what I remember every tear I shed for this movie was worth it.
Mayerling (1968)
Historically flawed but very romantic
I have lately been on an Omar Sharif binge. Mayerling is his third movie that I have seen these past few weeks. My mother was a fan of this movie. I never understood why. Now that I am old enough myself I understand the appeal of Mayerling. The sets are opulent. The cinematography is wonderful. And oh my were Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve beautiful! They looked incredible together! Although Deneuve's acting lacks a certain passion I felt Omar Sharif's performance, especially in the last scene, was quite touching. James Mason didn't have enough to do despite playing the character of the emperor. Ava Gardner looked older than her age. The sexual content and nudity, though tame by today's standards, is a bit crude. I have watched this movie three times and each time by the end of the movie I am shamelessly crying. Of course such love does not exist in real life but this kind of movies make one wish that it did.
