Fire Down Below (1997)
Written by an Algorithm
Seriously, this film plays like it was written by a (stupid) computer. Every single cliche is just put together by dog-dirt actors in order to provide yet another vehicle for Seagal. Does he believe he is actually a good actor or is he just doing it because he knows it will make easy dollars. If he wasn't a 7th dan karate, or whatever the hell he is, I would love to punch him in the face....in fact I may well dedicate my life to becoming an 8th dan, just to be able to beat him.
Out for Justice (1991)
So Clichéd it is Painful
Like basically every Seagal film, he takes every bad action film cliché, bundles them all up, and with some kind of terrible computer algorithm he creates yet another pile of dirt of a film. I would love to chop his stupid pony tail off and hold it to ransom in order to force him to stop ever making movies again.
Silverlake Life: The View from Here (1993)
Heartbreaking, Stunning
Rarely do I ever write reviews on IMDB but this movie seriously moved me. I can watch anything, from the most gruesome documenting reality videos to death camp videos to anything, but when the scene with the dead body comes it really hit me. I think this is not only because of the brutal reality of it, but also the slow deterioration of Tom that occurs throughout the film, as well as the realisation that it could have happened to anyone.
I am a straight man with no experience of AIDS or its effects, but this movie really brought home to me what it meant in the early 90s to be HIV positive.
Tears of the Sun (2003)
Military Industrial Complex produced film
Well yes this is a lovely film if you want to ignore reality and be blinded by clichéd rubbish, but there were so many points in the film where it was so obvious that it was part of the military industrial complex's PR department that it might as well have been daubed on billboards. The US soldiers for no good reason going into a village to save people and making every effort to only kill the bad guys without any innocent casualties, to the point of being embarrassed when confronted by a naked woman. Please. Come on. Make an effort. Why have we got to be confronted by crap like this continuously??? Does nobody have any idea what US soldiers did in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam etc? The only reason for this film is to glorify US soldiers and make poor 16 year olds dream of following in Bruce Willis's footsteps, i.e going to Africa, saving lots of people, impressing women, and coming home with just one scratch on your face rather than one or more limbs missing.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)
Why deviate so much at the end?
I appreciate that film makers can take some liberties in making a film in order to aid the flow of the film and to assist the audience's understanding without having to explain too much via a narrative. People on here are complaining about how the mother dies in childbirth or of smallpox and various other minor details. In reality they don't add or take anything away from the film or the story.
However, and it is a huge however, the liberty taken towards the end of re-animating Elizabeth is a massive deviation from the plot. Until that point I was really enjoying the movie. Although it didn't contain quite enough of the conflict in Frankenstein's mind, and whether Frankenstein's monster is a hero or a villain, it was a very solid adaptation of the novel...UNTIL the ridiculous scene where he tries to re-animate Elizabeth. Why does he need to do that? Why not just follow the original? Completely ruined it in my mind, despite a very good final scene.
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
What the hell is this?
How is it possible for a movie to be so bad and so far away from the amazing book and yet still call itself "Bram Stoker's". Who in their right mind cast Keanu Reeves as Jonathon? From the first moment it grates the ears as he struggles with the English accent. Why not just cast an English actor? And what the hell is happening with the count? Why the ridiculous hair. The whole point in the book is that he is slightly strange, not absolutely ridiculous. He is almost clown-like, not just his appearance, but the unbelievable over acting, making this absolutely un-watchable. Bram Stoker should come back as Dracula and kill all the cast and staff of this god-awful disgrace
