Joe Pickett: Circling Vultures (2021)
A little better than the pilot but...
So I decided to try the second episode. Part of me wanted to see if the show got any better and the other part of me wanted to see how the actor who played Nate Romanoski did. I was surprised. Mustafa Speaks does a great job of channeling Nate. You can feel the violence in him waiting to erupt. Other than Speaks' performance the show is still not its cracked up to be. Stick with the books.
Joe Pickett: A Monster at the Gate (2021)
Books are better
I have been hoping for a Joe Pickett series for years. Now that we have one I can say that I am underwhelmed. It is not as good as it could be. The scenes are long and plodding which made the episode drag on. If you want to see Joe Pickett at his best pick up one of the books.
Nine Perfect Strangers: Random Acts of Mayhem (2021)
Faster than the speed of smell
From the moment I started this show I was overwhelmed with a sense of boredom. There is very little action and a whole lot of dialogue. Better off moving on to something more action packed.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
A Great Cozy Mystery
I started watching it a few days ago and I love it. Steve Martin is brilliant as always, Martin Short is hilariously neurotic and Selena Gomez proves that she can hold her own with these comedic legends. This is the show everyone must watch this fall.
Future Man: Pilot (2017)
The Last Starfighter meets Chuck
I've always said we have run out of original ideas and this show proves it. Nerdy janitor plays video game, beats video game and is recruited to save the world. The characters are all two-dimensional and the acting is horrid. Rent The Last Starfighter if you want to see a better version.
Leverage: The Broken Wing Job (2012)
A great interpretation of a film classic
After a television show has been on long enough they will eventually film their own version of Rear Window or It's A Wonderful Life. Here the Leverage offers their own version of Rear Window with Parker stuck at home with a sprained knee while the rest of the gang is in Japan. Parker begins watching the security feed of the restaurant and notices two shady characters planning a crime. While several other shows have taken a stab at Rear Window, Leverage managed to stay true to the classic film by not only incorporating the story line of the criminals, but also that of some of the other patrons: the guy who orders the same dish and sends it back every time, the perfect couple referred to as Sid and Nancy who are not as perfect as they seem and two people dubbed Romeo and Juliet who are right for each other. Eventually all story lines are wrapped up and Parker manages to survive her convalescence period in true Parker fashion.
Ruby Cairo (1992)
Not worth the rental fee
I just finished watching this film, and can say that this is a "B" movie in every sense of the phrase. Andie MacDowell (complete with Southern drawl) plays Elizabeth "Bessie" Faro, a woman whose bad boy husband Johnny (played by Viggo Mortensen) is killed in Mexico. While going through his affairs, Bessie discovers that Johnny had money hidden in accounts all over the world. As she globe trots through the world, she discovers along the way that (surprise surprise) Johnny is still alive. Soon Bessie starts to track Johnny down in order to learn why he did what he did. Along the way, she meets a doctor (Liam Neeson in a wasted role) whose organization is tied to Bessie's husband.
This is a film of wasted talent. MacDowell's performance feels like she phoned in her lines, Mortensen comes across as wooden (think of Adam West's portrayal of Batman) and the rest of the no-name cast is just as terrible. Only Neeson's performance is worth the mention in this turkey. Originally released in 1992, this film feels like it was made years earlier (references to East Berlin) and may well have been the first leading part for MacDowell. Both Neeson and Mortensen would struggle for years before either of them carved their own niche in Hollywood.
Fright Night 2 (2013)
Words cannot describe how much this sucked
When I found out that they remade Fright Night in 2010, I was excited. In fact I thought I was renting that movie tonight, when I ended up with this version instead. I gave it a shot, but was disappointed. The truth is that this is not a sequel, but a remake of the 2010 version. The big difference here is that Jerry Dandridge is Gerri Dandridge (in case you missed it, the big bad blood sucker is a girl) and the film is set in Romania instead of suburbia. However these plot points do little to help this movie. If you want to watch an update of the original Fright Night, then rent the 2010 version with Colin Farrell and David Tennant.
