Nocturne (2020)
I don't get it
Does this mean that she's delusional, all along? That there never was a supernatural factor rather she had some psychological problems. That's why her parents treat her as such. Or maybe her parents treating her that way contributed to her being the way she was.
Or maybe, she got what she wanted and all it cost her was the destruction of the lives of those people close to her. Everyone applauded her perfomance and such but no one sees the monster that she has become to reach that level.
And the saddest thing is that afterwards, everything is as it was. People went on with their lives. Meanwhile, she was dead inside.
So this movie was from 4 years ago. I do wonder if they are trying to get that Asian Horror movie weirdness. Asian movies are on a whole new level and they really could learn a lot from it.
This was good. Could be better. I mean, it really just got interesting when Vivian almost died.
Bangku Kosong: Ujian Terakhir (2023)
WHY
I was expecting A LOT because it stars Karina Suwandhi. It was promising at the start but itwent downhill at about 10-15 minutes. There are indeed creepy and disturbing but for the most part it's just plain ridiculous. And of them all, what really ticked me off is the too cool to be bothered of the exorcists. Smh. And then there are those possessions that looked like amateur breakdancers. Bad acting. It's too bad to be considered comedy. Annoying teen characters that blame their fault on their teachers and whose character development is only at 0.1%. Seriously, this entire show is like Child's Play but instead of a doll, zombies are possessed. I don't get where they are going with this. If it was about black magic or the exaggerated focus on test scores, they really could've done better.
Kultus Iblis (2023)
Disgusting!
Ok. So, if you're in any way, easily disgusted and it usually sticks with you, do yourself a favor and don't watch this. I'm not easily disgusted, myself, but this was yeesh!
On another note, I will never believe that a pair of urban dwellers, upon witnessing something frightening and unexplainable, would directly go to an unheard of rural place to seek answers.
LIKE, WHAT?! 😂🤣
Speaking as a Southeast Asian living in a provincial city, practically all my life, I have been taught ever since I was little, to NEVER venture to rural areas. If need be always go WITH a trusted local.
And yet, this pair just hopped on a bus, to God knows where, hoping to find their father's estranged family.
I tell you, if your parent/s died without telling you any of it, it's best to let it go and let it be. Maybe that was their goal, to let it die with them.
It isn't as scary as it is disturbing and disgusting. Cannibalism. Incest. Suicide. The gross factor is from start to finish but the interesting parts happen past midway.
Fadi Alaydrus (Raka) fit the bill as the gorgeous but dull twin while Yasamin Jasem (Naya) nailed it as the responsible, intuitive and anxious twin. She's got good acting skills! Meanwhile, the horror movie industry could use some pointers from Alit Aryani Willems about how to really be creepy and frightening.
No jumpscares.
No loud noises.
No freaky prosthetics or heavy makeup.
Just a person with barely contained malice in their eyes.
THAT is horrifying.
Wayang Puaka (2023)
Noisy, confusing nonsense.
Arguments and shouting with no clear story. What was this all about? A haunted cinema? Occultism? Black magic? Why the long emphasis on them being paranormal youtubers when they'd disband? 🙄 First it was that Afiq who was being belligerent. Then Hatta. Then Panjang thought to tweak things without Hatta's say so which led to Hatta doing solo projects that led to his disappearance.
The whole movie just has no coherence. That village plagued by black magic practitioners, the haunted cinema, the cursed owner of cinema. What? Each scene doesn't connect well with the next.
Plus the shaky live footage camera just isn't doing it any favors.
Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan (2023)
Creepy, yes but no story
I do not know where they were going with this. Truly, I just. Ano??? 😂 Where to even begin? I'm at a loss for words because I literally have nothing to say. Was she dead? Was he dead? All along? So they really weren't blood relatives? Was she a member of the occult? Why does she have a ton of religious statues? Was he a blood sacrifice? What about those children? Those creepy island folk? And what was his grandma talking about??? That girl he impregnated. About him being a thief? Did that mean that his relatives sent him to that island because they were tired of his shenanigans? Why does he act like he doesn't know anything?
WHY???
The Herald and the Horror (2021)
Typical Filipino household
The story is actually not that bad. It blurs the line between the supernatural and psychological. Moira's either possessed or her father's fears came true-she was assaulted while walking home late at night. WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?
All that aside, I think it's an artful representation of the dysfunction of a typical Filipino household. Parental fears and prejudices founded on personal shortcomings that became the reasons behind the strict upbringing. Adult children expected to behave like adults but the older generation treating them like children who don't know any better. Controlling parents and hypercritical grandparents. Heavy emphasis on religion and devotion but also rife with hypocrisy. Unresolved familial resentments aired out in the open for children and guests to witness. The need to escape such a hellhole without understanding the situation just creates another hellhole.
With all these being said, I hope this is the last time these actors act. Smh. It's worse than worst.
Interceptor (2022)
Okay, this one went way over my head.
I realize now that this is dark comedy. I can not count how many times I've laughed and said, "What is wrong with this movie!". Surely, they can NOT be serious! In hindsight, I think the funny aspects of the movie is what made me stay and finish the show 'til the end. The creators have managed to fuse Rambo McClane style of action with today's need for inclusivity while addressing social issues.
I've only ever known of Elsa Pataky as Chris Hemsworth's wife and in this movie, disappoint she did not. She's amazeballs awesome, coming off as vulnerable yet dignified and extremely loyal JJ Collins.
JJ collins can give Rambo and McClane a run for their money. I can't count how many times she's hit her head yet she's still thinking tactically. Did an American Ninja Warrior stunt while her left arm sported a bullet wound. Even as she fell on the ocean from the top of the rig, she still managed to execute her opponent a la barbed wire garrote. She saved the whole USA and Turbo, too.
Actiony and funny, even THE Chuck Norris would approve!
Rock My Heart (2017)
It's a simple movie.
The only thing I didn't understand is why that character had to exit. Why? WHY? I mean, the story is veering towards the ideal direction, WHY NOT JUST INCLUDE THE WHOLE PACKAGE? 😭 Okay fine. I do understand. It shows THAT side of the situation. But it's just not cool man, not cool. To say that it's heartbreaking is an understatement.
I do think that they didn't intend for the movie to be that deep; just enough for people to see and gain perspective. I'm saying this because the movie is FILLED with out of this world nonsense that's just there to further sensationalize your viewing experience. So, chill with the realistic points; you'll only tire yourself. 🤣
Nightmare School Moms (2023)
Maladjusted Mummies
"I can't. She's my mom." Y'all with well-adjusted mothers could never understand. Smh. I was alternating between being annoyed and laughing my way through the movie until that very moment Nicole uttered that single line. That was gut-wrenching torn between morality and loyalty to your mom. I didn't expect the story to head towards drama and cliched happy ending. Don't get me wrong, it was a fitting end. Nicole standing up for herself really tied it all together.
It's just that, I really thought this was more of a war of the PTA Karens. I mean, it seemed like the narrative was hinting that Mandy may also be underhanded just subtler than Lacy. It was confusing and not in a good way.
It would've been better if there were recollections about their past; why Lacy came to hate Mandy. Plus Mandy's side as well, both past and present.
The actress who played Lacy, though. She is menacing! Wow. So, so amazing!
The Barn Part II (2022)
Okay, wait.
At first I was like, "what in the low budget attempt at horror" is this?! But as I got deeper into the movie, I was like "no, scratch that. THIS IS AWESOME!!!". It's just so, I don't know, nostalgic. It's brings back way too many good feels, it made me giddy with happiness, I didn't even care much about the "horror", I just honestly enjoyed it.
It's like Are You Afraid of the Dark x Goosebumps x Night of the Crazies x Trick r Treat x Return of the Living Dead. It's just so freakin' fun! I didn't even have to watch the prequel to enjoy the movie. It pretty much can stand on its own. I am, however, gonna watch it now.
This belongs to every Halloween Movie Marathon list. I can't believe it's a movie from 2022. Glad to know there are creators out there who could still produce great material.
Rasuk (2022)
Bridging two horror concepts together
This was really great in the first half and then the story kind of got lost along the way. It's something with the sequencing of the story and some unnecessary drama. Some characters need not have perished or perished so early in the movie. Some details were only revealed in the later part of the movie and it kind of lost it's relevance. Some details weren't quite clear, as is typical of Asian horror movies.
I like the demonic possession meets zombies concept. I've never seen another movie with such concept that really resonated with me, so I'm assuming this maybe the first of its kind. I think it's brilliant and creative. I'm an avid fan of Asian horror cinema and I've watched a whole lot of them. Where there usually is bad acting and a cast that just looks "pretty", this one has good acting and a cast with looks that have CHARACTER.
I'm not saying they're not good looking, though! I'm just saying they don't look generic and dolled up. You can distinguish one character from the other without their looks getting in the way. I think this is perhaps what I like most about the movie.
They got the ominous feeling of being uncertain and helpless, down pat. That scene where the teacher gets face to face with an infected student and when "ground zero" got in Kechik's face. That was terrifying! Plus that guard approaching that bloody student who had his back turned, seriously, there are only two adults in the hostel and there an unscheduled blackout then you see that kid who isn't in distress but is covered in blood. What are the odds that they've become a demonic being with bloodlust? The creepy is strong with this one.
What I didn't like is the sequencing and the coherence. I think it could've been better. Just in case a sequel is in the works, might be great to explain the stuff on this movie that were left floating.
Lastly, why wear a beanie/bonnet in a tropical country?
Come Play (2020)
New fear unlocked.
I agree with everyone in saying that this here is quite decent. The cast actually acts. The characters have personality and the story is coherent. I don't often find western horror movies particularly creepy or interesting but this one is among the exception. It's not about fantasy/supernatural horror, more on real life horrors.
For me, the truest form of horror in this movie is not that so-called monster. It's having kids, then finding out along the way that you are not up to the challenge. Even scarier is having kids with special needs and the strength of your relationship, your marriage is tested, sadly you find that it isn't that solid to begin with. So you grow more resentful as every day goes by. You don't try to look at your kid's condition through as it is but view it through the lens of you being a failure of a parent. By then, It's all about you, you, you. Then one of you opts for the easy way out and leaves the family. Meanwhile, you're left to fend for a child with a condition that you don't understand, you're overwhelmed and burned out which causes you to be resentful and such resentfulness terribly affects how you raise your child and how you feel about yourself.
And until you realize that you are a part of the problem, the Larry in your life will never cease to exist.
Re/Member (2022)
I'll watch this again!
Okay, maybe I'm looking too much into this but I feel is about maturity; teens slowly transitioning into young adults. I think this specific group of students were chosen because of all their peers, they are like the ones who saw through their basic high school existence.
I'm not a fan of horror movies with no meaning so, I'm not gonna lie, at first I was interested then I slowly got disinterested after that first kill, when that teenaged boy's body got severed and his legs just had the audacity to be crossed, MIDAIR!
Anyway, I just, it looked to me like the "Red Person" was that thing we call peer pressure. Them being killed and being reborn represents them standing up to it and getting better while being eaten by it is like the all too common ''eaten by the system'' expression. Especially after that moment when the teacher talked about his own friends in high school.
I went into this expecting a horror movie that's something along the likes of Gannibal but was more All of Us are Dead minus an antagonist in the group. To some extent it exceeded my expectations. I feel like this may be one of those Asian horror movies that gives you a different perspective every time you watch it.
Barbarian (2022)
I did not even bother to finish watching this movie.
Okay, this was really good when it started. It managed to convey the sinister side of renting a guest house. What if something went wrong with the reservations and have no where else to go? What would you do during such an ungodly hour? You wouldn't agree with the character's decisions but you totally understand where she's coming from. Even when she doesn't follow through with what a local was talking about and just proceeds to go back to the house, even when she's maxed out her fear factor, I mean how would you feel if you get locked in a basement where you found a secret room that looks like disturbingly morbid events have happened on there, and still thought it was a good idea to go after her accidental housemate, you'd still be a bit understanding of her actions.
But then, instead banking on the horrifying aspects of what it really is to be human, the show quickly turned into a Drag Me To Hell kind of St. Francisville Experiment mix. That's when I lost all faith and I just zoned out. Oddly enough, I can still remember that disgusting scene with the milk bottle. Ick. I skipped to the part where the female character managed to exit the house with the help of another local AND YET, in spite of the warnings, she still insists on going back because that guy blah blah blah.
At that point, I was done and I just didn't care. I'm not a fan of senseless horror, especially those that are big on gore and torture.
Among Friends (2012)
Nah, this just ain't it. :(
I'll give it props for the truth bumps and the bits of psych facts (bystander effect, anyone?) Apart from that it's all just nope in it's purest sense.
First, this all happened because of a "psychotic" psychiatrist. I mean, I get that this was in the early 10s, when the world was still fine tuning social media and whatever but what in the Hannibal Lecter, Saw with a dash of Cruel Intentions, Mean Girls, American Pie and Sorority Row all rolled into one?!
I just, I feel like that bit about the "psychotic" psychiatrist wasn't well researched enough. It's like saying that all people with mental disorders can be summed up in one word. So many questions are in my mind because of that character, like I want to know what set her up to be this self-righteous yet blunt messiah.
And what's with the 80s theme? It's like it was only there to justify corny torture.
I was expecting it to be a whodunnit wherein "friends" drop the scam and reveal their true colors just to clear their names.
It would have made a difference if it focused on how well does one know their friend; like letting people take a step back, make the haze go away and let them see things as they really are. Like Bernadette should just be in the shadows, taking care to not bring attention to herself, a voice that taunts or haunts each person. In turn, they'll be so unsettled, they'll eventually turn on each other.
Sick (2022)
SLASHER FILMS MAKES A COMEBACK!
Omg, where to start??? I didn't really know what to expect while deciding to watch this movie. All I know is that I was satisfied with the reviews I've read on here and the movie summary was kinda cool and interesting.
I love every single thing, especially the comedic bits, so on point! Seriously, in the event of a home invasion, please DO NOT FORGET TO WEAR YOUR MASK. 😂
THIS is how a horror-slasher movie SHOULD BE! It's creepy. It makes you uncomfortable because of the uncertainty and the lack of knowledge. Zero gore would've been preferable but I guess a wee bit is acceptable provided it ISN'T the focus of the movie.
Gore and torture is highly unsavory.
There IS a story. It's building as the movie begins-not too slow or too fast. It's not banking on being "unique", "artistic" or "deviant" It's well arranged that it flowed smoothly.
And when it got to THAT part where it all made sense, there was no nonsense. It was brooding yet straight to the point. You'd empathize with both sides but eventually the sense of humanity (at least, it was for me) will prevail.
The ending sew it all together. It neither cryptic nor dramatic.
A couple of things more:
1. I can't help but think that Parker & Miri are like Charlotte & Tiana.
2. That song by Erasure had me boppin' and singing to the beat. 😂
3. The slasher reference! 💯👌👍💪
4. I sure hope there'll be more like this movie. On that note, PLEASE, THIS IS REALLY WORTH THE WATCH! Watch it during sleepovers, with barkadas, or alone. Just watch it!
April Fool's Day (2008)
Why?
Why did this fall under the "chilling", "scary", "horror" category?! THIS IS NOTHING IF NOT COMEDY, OMG.
😂😂😂 The twist at the end is the biggest joke of it all. It's so sad the way it was trying to be ominous, it was hilarious. In our time, this would be rightfully called gaslighting and I doubt such a confession could be used in court. Seriously. What in the unseasoned society is this dumpster fire?!!! 🤣
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
*sigh*
*sigh* should've judged it at first glance. I really thought this was something, you know. The opening music reminds me of ominous thrillers from the 90's, even the shots of the sea, the island and the cozy bookstore in town, no matter how irrelevant gave that same vibe. Buuut that's just about it. It's empty. The sex scenes make me uncomfortable.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
All that suspense..
For nothing. 😑 The characters weren't very well developed. The movie was pnly focused on foolong with your mind, that when the truth came out, it didn't make much sense.
Great seeing Gary Oldman and Julianne Moore, though. Plus that house is magnificent!!!
The Shallows (2016)
I thought we were way over this ignorance. 🙄
It's like we're back in the past when wild animals are depicted in movies to do one thing-attack. No reason. Just attack, attack, attack. 🙄 The resolution alone says a lot about this!
Cry Wolf (2005)
Ok, so this movie is way ahead of its time!
Rich: "The arrogance of youth."
Owen: "Don't you mean confidence?"
Rich: "Actually, I meant ignorance."
Dodger: "It's like you're all talking/playing checkers and I'm talking/playing chess."
First of all, thank you Netflix for choosing to air this old movie. If it weren't for you I would never have heard of this. Seriously, how has this not reached the mainstream?! Granted the cast is laughably older than the characters they purportedly play but come on, the storyline! I can't ever remember having a teen movie like this during the 2000s.
And hello, Jon Bon Jovi??? It wasn't until middle of the movie that I realized he was the teacher. He looked every inch the private school professor, so unlike his rockstar self. Am I not just that big a fan or was this really done in good taste because I barely recognized him. I think it's really worth a mention that his role isn't the typical prima donna diva poor excuse, often so common with artists who have coveted the God status in their careers. I didn't notice him as The Jon Bon Jovi, he just melds so well with his character, Mr. Walker.
This movie will play with your own stereotypes making you second guess yourself 'til the very end. You'll be extremely manipulated in spite of what you know and when the truth comes out, you'll be bamboozled!
We need more like this!
Pulau Hantu (2008)
Spell Absurd
Why? Just, why? 😂 The oening ghost story was promising. But things that followed are just too sad for words. 😂😂😂
Ular Tangga (2017)
Not bad!
With good acting and movie effects, this could have been better.
For once, a horror movie successfully conveyed the message about how something as "small" as choosing to ignore basic rules could totally alter your life to your disadvantage. It basically captured the horror of being trapped, powerless, nowhere to go, at the mercy of creatures that apparently don't exist.
That being said, the story was kind of going off in different directions. Why did Fina have that kind of ability? What was up with Gina? Why was the old lady like that? Did the kids reconcile with their father? Why can't they move on? I like the idea but there were a lot of unanswered questions.
W lesie dzis nie zasnie nikt (2020)
There's dumb, dumber and then there's this. 😭
Say what you want about the political and/or religious statements but sacrificing yourself to fight that "pizza-faced bleep bleep" will always be 🤦♀️ and unacceptable. You were THE GUIDE, the only one who knows the terrain. How do you suppose those frightened kids would know the way back to camp?! And how is it justifiable to trespass in that creature's house? Seriously, ain't the smell of death enough to send you running?
The Perfect Guy (2015)
What a Moon Moon. 🙄
If anything good is to come out of this movie, I hope it's that people will not want to be the kind of simp that is Leah Vaughn.
This is infuriating!
