Turning Red (2022)
7/10
Not the best Pixar, not the Worst
19 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a fine movie, probably won't have the lasting appeal of the best Pixar, but certainly not on the level of the Good Dinosaur or the Cars movies as many OUTRAGED reviewers are saying.

As far as I can tell, the anger is due to 1. It's about a teenage girl ('not made for ME' - middle aged white dudes) 2. It's about a Chinese-Canadian family 3. It's 'woke' (e.g. It features non-white non-americans) 4. It addresses puberty (gasp!) 5. It's communist propaganda by demonic liberal hollywood monsters

It's like, if you can't handle watching a movie that doesn't specifically cater to your particular worldview, then don't watch it. There are plenty of superhero blockbusters that don't take any risks.

Is this movie great? No, but the level of vitriol directed towards it smacks of the anti-female anti-Asian hatred that permeates a certain segment of the population. If the concept of menstruation sends you into a spiral of righteous anger, go watch Left Behind or something.

High Spirits (1988)

Budget Movie Channel Staple
5 February 2022
Saw this about 100 times as a kid. It's not very well written, the plot is an afterthought, and the acting is wildly uneven (with the exception of Peter O'Toole, who even on contractual obligation autopilot is worth watching IMO).

It's also fun and has a ridiculously deep cast and some pretty funny moments. 5/10 plus 1 extra for nostalgia. If you like madcap 80s B comedies and are not looking to use your brain for a couple hours you could certainly do worse.

Take a dip in the shallow end
12 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Starts with steve zahn's scrotum and only goes downhill from there. Purports to have some sort of message but it's buried under unappealing overblown stereotypes, poor writing, and a strange approach to cringe humor that completely omits the humor part. An absolute chore to watch. One extra star for the competence of the film crew.

A planeload of undelivered packages
19 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Beefy corporate rep chuck fails to propose to his girlfriend while he jet sets on the fedex account. Soon, his plane ditches in a violent watery fx extravaganza. Chuck wakes up on deserted island and things are bad and good and bad again, formerly doughy chuck gets all sinewy from surviving, with help from a volleyball with blood on it. Interesting stuff happens. But not interesting enough for chuck; fed up with simply surviving, chuck builds a raft using lots of rope and leaves the island with his volleyball to return to his true love. But

*record needle scratch*

she got married to some other guy and had a kid. From there the movie wanders aimlessly for a while as we wonder if helen hunt is gonna leave her family but then she doesn't and then the movie just sort of ends. If I could do it all again, I'd watch it until he gets rescued then turn it off and watch the end of Big, so I could pretend that chuck noland was a really just a child from new jersey the entire time, and still has his whole life ahead of him. 7/10 for a sucky ending to an otherwise enjoyable movie.
