Descent/good as a standalone story, poor as a book adaptation.
25 September 2022
Like the vast majority of the book adaptations, the book is always better. This series would have worked better either more/less true to the book. It would have been an improvement for it to either forsake the book totally and simply let it be "inspired by", or conversely followed it more closely and stay true to the original work. It did somewhat fall into the gray area in between, which may be the cause of many polarized reviews.

That said, if you forget about the book (or never read it) and ignore the similarity in peoples' names, as a standalone series it is still a good story, and worth watching. The acting, directing, music, pacing, effects, etc. Are all on par and what you would expect with with its above-average budget.

Fantastic film that largely flew under the radar
28 December 2021
TL;DR: Watch it, you will not regret it.

This film somehow managed to evade any mainstream publicity, but easily belongs among the classics of the era. It is a powerful movie that leaves a lasting impression well beyond its runtime. Even if the genre is not your normal choice, but you are still slightly intrigued, then give it a chance.

I was personally a bit hesitant seeing the guy from Game of Thrones as the lead, and not being very familiar with him outside of that series. He has totally earned my respect from this movie, with wide range of emotion and a very raw performance. I am not a professional critic nor have the words to describe the quality, but in layman terms: someone whose eyes convey more than just the words being spoken on screen. You can almost feel what the character is feeling by how well it is acted.

Worthy of my first 1 star rating
9 December 2021
Let me preface this rating: I have never given a 1 or 10 star review, I have never encountered a film/series worthy of either extreme, and have pretty much just considered them a theoretical extreme that is unachievable.

This series has changed my mind. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about it. I confess I didn't make it through all episodes, only the first 3, and that was 3 too many.

Disregard the controversy concerning the anti-Christmas message it tries so hard to push at every opportunity, and there is still nothing. The humor is simply not funny, it is just cringe after cringe. Playground fart jokes offer infinitely more comedy than this heap of garbage.

I am honestly at a loss for words. Go watch paint dry or water boil, it is far more interesting, and much more funny. This is not hyperbole orr exaggeration, I mean this with sincere earnestness. It is literal anti-fun, and will put you in a worse mood than you started, will lower your IQ by at least 10 points, and ruin the flavor of food.

You have been warned.

Don't discount the negative reviews
7 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Having watched a "top 10" video for "Most Disturbing Horror Movies" and hearing this movie mentioned, it piqued my curiosity. I found the reviews very mixed. I generally discard any ratings at either extreme, and focus more on 3-4 for negative, and 5-7 for positive.

I chose to take my chances, and watch it anyways, even having heard the multitude of negative reviews that for the most part had similar complaints.

Chief among these is can be summarized: It is a boring look into the life of a couple teenagers engaging in high-risk behavior and vulgar conversation. I am unsure who this would appeal to, but it is very much not titillating, and more cringe. This is the first 44 minutes.

Then comes the "abduction". Faux clips of some news segments and some absolutely immersion-killing "Missing Persons" show that is so poorly produced it is laughable. This goes on for about another 20-something minutes.

Finally we have the "22 minutes", which is the "horror" section of film. There is indeed a few very disturbing portions, but to ininuate it is 22 minutes long is misleading. Half of this time-frame is watching the faceless assailant dig a hole.

TLDR: While there is some extremely brief "disturbing" shots that live up to the hype, they in no way make it watchable, or redeem the slog that is the first 80% and last 10% of the movie. If you saw a brief clip to make you curious, then you have already seen half of the film's climax.

So bad.
9 September 2019
Just so bad. Terrible in every regard. There is literally no redeeming quality about this movie, it fails on all fronts. I watched just to see how a movie could manage to get a score of 1,1 (at the time), and must say that is about 0.9 too high of a score for it.

Another Victim of Politicizing Comedy After Great Beginnings
14 July 2019
The series begin great, one of the funniest series I had seen in a long while at that time, and good comedy is difficult to come by. It truly lived up to its name, providing cringe-worthy humor, and yet also seamlessly combining it with a meaningful drama that few other series have ever been able to pull off.

This continues for the first few seasons, with the typical ups and downs, some story arcs of the characters being more interesting than others, which is expected in any series with as many memorable characters.

Since the shift begin in the political climate, the series decided to shift in the same direction, and is suffering greatly because of it. What used to be apolitical, or rather distributing it evenly with good spirited humor, has turned the way of so many and simply become a new political cudgel. It takes quite obvious stances on political issues, and rams it down your throat, trying to make a message that was neither needed or asked for, and is not even in the spirit of comedy. It is simply there. Entire episodes and story arcs, that have no comedy in them whatsoever and are there simply trying to make a statement. The comedy that they do attempt with it is the nasty mean-spirited kind of "humor" that is not funny, but is simply insults without intelligence attempting to hide behind the mask of comedy.

So unfortunately the series is going down hill at a break-neck pace, and likely nothing is going to save it now, especially with the loss of the central character. Alienating half of your viewer-base with in-your-face-political-statements is not exactly a good tactic for ratings, so it will reap what it sowed.

I am just not "woke" enough apparently.
21 April 2019
I watched this just to see how extreme of a direction this new "woke" philosophy is taking the world, and I was not disappointed.

If you into self-harm, and figured this might work as an outlet for that after reading the synopsis, then you, my friend, are correct. Watch if any of these criteria apply to you:

  • Hate heterosexuals (what an outdated philosophy!)
  • Especially hate male heterosexuals
  • Enjoy leftie agendas being forced upon you
  • Read the summary and said "Wow, this sounds like great movie!"

Uninteresting.
31 October 2018
Long story short, if this was a heterosexual couple, the rating would be closer to a 3. It is simply yet another piece of film for liberals to vote a 10 and praise as modern Shakespeare so they can feel good about there great moral superiority. If you don't vote an 8 or above, it is because you are a homophobic unenlightened hate-monger, and nothing else.

It couldn't possibly be as simple as you think the film is completely bland in every way, and you choose not to be discriminate and give it an 8+ for the sole fact that it contains homsexuals, as that helps no one. No problem with homosexuals, completely libertarian, so I wont give this film a raving review based on that.

Do we really need this? Does anyone actually care?
25 October 2018
This is quite possibly THE most pointless documentary ever created, which is especially surprising considering its talented creator.

Well made in regards to direction, production, etc, but seriously, who cares about this? Honestly, without any intent on being rude, and purely from an objective standpoint, why was there a documentary created about this person? It holds the same interest as it would for any random person on the planet.

Every person in the world has a "story". Welcome to humanity, we don't all need a documentary.

Some unique qualities, but somewhat bland overall
23 October 2018
This is not a bad movie, nor is it a great movie.

PROS: The acting is superb, all the cast did an excellent job, which is the film's strongest asset. The mood is well captured, and it does a fair job of using emotion properly to convey what is left "unsaid"

CONS: A little too slow-paced, even for the nature of the movie. There is a sever lack of explanation for many aspects of the characters back-story and conclusion. While some might say in it defense that is "leaves it to the viewer's imagination", which I am fine with, this film takes that a bit too far in my opinion, and it makes it a bit disjointed.

My expectations thinking perhaps this was going to be in the vein of "Let Me In" perhaps skewed my opinion. The premise is similar on a very basic level - "boys meets undead girl, they sense kindred spirits", but this film was not executed nearly as well.

Maybe if tripping on acid and bored....
14 July 2018
I practically never turn off a movie, no matter how bad,I will see it through. I could only make it through 45 minutes of this one before I was fighting that urge stronger than ever before.

At that point I realized that this completely bizarre move was going exactly no where. It is bizarre for the sake of being bizarre, and it is has no relevance whatsoever, and is merely trying to distract you from the abhorrent non-sense that is being vomited across the screen. There is no point of anything, it is just disjointed grainy clips joined together.

If you watch the first 5 minutes and are just thinking "WTF?", I should keep watching to see what's going on and see where this leads, I will spare you the suspense, it doesn't lead anywhere, at any point. The same disjointed non-sense just keeps coming, and if you seen 5 minutes of it, you have seen it all, it is just more of the same.

Strongly advise to pass on this one, no matter how intriguing it seems from the description and/or trailer.
