Kya Mast Hai Life (2009)
One of the best entertaining shows.
I can go on and on about the specialty of this show. Many may not share the same attitude towards this show as that of mine, but this show would sure entertain you. The characters are very interesting, the acting by the lead cast is very professional but i cannot say the same about occasional appearances. This is one of my all time favorites. I don t know why I am not able to put together the required words to tell how dear I hold this show.
I had a major crush on Shweta Tripathi (Zenia khan) and still have. She is awesome in the show. She had won "best expressions" award for this show.
Lootera (2013)
Like a cool breeze in summer....
The summer being the plethora of uninspired, uninspiring, remade, copied... films we are getting to watch now-a-days. And of-course the cool breeze being the sweet celebration of art-movie called Lootera.
The movie takes off well and maintains the consistency, when its not topping itself. The background score is good. The acting part is done well by both the leads. The writing could have been a tad better nevertheless the jokes work well and the dialogs are well written. The direction is perfect for this genre of cinema. At times you feel you are watching a great sequence from a great movie. That is the magic of Vikramaditya Motwane.
But what stands apart is the Cinematography and art-direction. I am sure this movie will receive awards in this category. The scenery is beautiful the locations are well selected. It sets the mood for 1950's era.
This is a classy movie, the one you can watch with whole family and enjoy. There is nothing commercial in it like unwanted item songs, swearing dialogs, skin show, etc. The two complaints I have against this film are that 1.) It could have been a tad shorter in length. 2.) (TINY SPOILER AHEAD) The heavy breathing sound Sonakshi makes is irritating and gave me a head-ache in the cinema-hall.
There are flavors of love, comedy, drama, suspense, melody and a fitting climax. The movie will leave you with a smile on your face and the sweet melodious songs running in your mind as you walk out of the cinema-hall.
Chaar Din Ki Chandni (2012)
Not as bad as thought.
I dint even know this movie existed until it was played during a journey in the bus. When I saw Tusshar Kapoor I thought in my mind lets make fun of this movie and enjoy. No wonder this movie flopped, it has every ingredient for a flop movie: 1.)Tusshar Kapoor(that too in lead) 2.)Weak script 3.)No memorable songs(not a big issue though)
It doesn't take long to tell a flop movie from other. The first five minutes can tell you(most of the time this has been proved right for me). But the reason it is worthy of writing a review is, its not bad. The moment you drop your expectations to zero, this movie will surprise you in unexpected ways but once you start liking it and your expectations soar, it kicks them to the cold hard ground.
You might say why would I watch a movie if I expect nothing from it. Fair enough, but if you find yourself in a situation like mine, where the other option you have apart from viewing the movie is sleeping, you can give it a try, you will be entertained. Otherwise, buying this movie and watching it may disappoint you.
The comedy is great it worked for me. I enjoyed the movie. Chandni's father is hilarious. There are many hilarious moments which you would not have expected.
Overall a sweet movie nothing more than that.
Dazed and Confused (1993)
Those Bitter-Sweet days!
After watching Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise, Sunset I was moved and looked up his other movies and this title caught my attention. I got it and saw it recently. The plot is one which we all can connect with, which is the last day of school (probably not the part where all the drinking and smoking, getting wasted, laid happens).
The craziness, rawness, carelessness of youth at that point of time is displayed on screen with much clarity. The dialogs are well written. The characters are all unique and have all performed well. We can connect to each of the character in the movie. Some are nerds, discussing deep, philosophical matters, theories, etc, who are decent and less violent as compared to the other groups. Some are violent, rash, rude and have all those character traits of a person, our parents warn us to stay away from. They make a joke of authority, care least about their own future and get involved in drugs, smoking, drinking etc.
There's a line by a character in the movie which goes something on the lines of "if life's so short then we should enjoy it to the maximum while we are alive". Some kids take it too seriously and ruin their lives. I almost felt like talking to these kids and telling them its not the way of life, and that they are wasting their lives' best days. But then they would scoff at any such idea which stops them from enjoying.
Some parts are very funny. Whenever Slater comes on screen, its hilarious. And there are parts where we can see how vulnerable some of the characters are to find someone to fall in love with. There is some great sound tracks running in the background which sets the mood for the 70's. Some great dialogs too.
There is no conclusion shown but that bitter-sweet period is captured brilliantly. I rate it 7/10.
Before Sunrise (1995)
A wonderful delight!
Saw Before Sunset accidentally as i was surfing channels on TV. I was hooked to the screen 2 min into the movie. I then looked it up on IMDb and found it was a sequel to Before Sunrise and both had good ratings so i got them and saw them many times.
Before Sunrise is a wonderful movie about two random persons making genuine interesting conversations throughout the movie roaming in Vienna. Both Celine and Jesse are smart people with their own philosophies of life. The viewer can connect with the natural chemistry between the two lead actors. The writing part of the movie is done very well. The conversations are made to look very real, yet very deep and thoughtful. The acting is natural too and so is the direction. Richard Linklater always chooses deep, thought provoking subjects in his movies.
At the end of the movie you feel the pain of the pair departing. You would wish the pair had more time with each other. The sequel is like a gift to the fans. It is wonderful too. Now eagerly waiting for the 3rd installment.
Its almost impossible to describe the essence of this movie to someone who has not seen it. Because one has to experience it. So if you have not seen it and if you like romantic, heart touching movies then go for it you will be delighted.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Good improvement over the previous one
When the first spider-man movie came out, in 2002, i was 12 years old, the movie had a huge impact on me. I pasted spider-man stickers everywhere in the house. I used to fantasize about me being spider-man and used to go jumping over walls. Me and my friend even had a cable wire tied to a tree branch and used to swing holding the wire making big circles in air. The thrill we used to get was priceless. Oh, those were the days. Before Batman Begins trilogy happened spider-man was my favorite superhero. Even to this day my hand automatically goes in the pose to release web sometimes. My point is i loved spider-man.
The next two installments were also fantastic. It seems they planned to make a 4th one but Tobey Maguire wanted to be the part of this project only if Sam Raimi was directing it. So they chose Andrew Garfield. He was good in The Social Network.
The movie is very high on technical values. Not only the movie but also the making of the movie. This one is very refreshing and takes a realistic approach towards the main character rather than being clichéd. Marc Webb directed 500 days.. it was a very very good movie. The romance in this movie is portrayed much better than in the original.
It did not have much action compared to the original 1st. But the action sequences were very well done. Andrew Garfield has done very good job in the stunts and also in displaying different emotions. Emma Stone is like a doll. She is also a talented actress. The movie did not answer Peter's past life questions, it only raised more.
The web releasing gadget, the suit are a good improvement over the original. Some people on the message boards are questioning why a reboot? Well as long they are good, I say keep em coming. And this sure did not disappoint me. So Iam not complaining. Though the action could have been more. It is very well written, directed and acted. After the movie ended, I was craving for more, I did not want it to end.
All-in-all nice movie. Emma Stone looked really gorgeous. And the ending was good too. I cant wait for the sequel.
Cocktail (2012)
Trailer is to be blamed
Cocktail looked promising going by the trailers. Well from now on I will try not to watch trailers of any upcoming movies. They spoil all the fun. From now on its a rule of thumb, not to expect anything new or mind blowing from any film. It will help in enjoying the movie.
The movie started off well. Veronica and Meera's friendship, given their entirely contrasting personalities is fun to watch. Enter Gautam, the dialogs and scenes are very hilarious. "Daaru desi" song shows how good the trio's on-screen chemistry is. Then the "Tumhi ho bandhu" song. It is the best part of the movie. Diana Penty is very charming in the song sequence. The music gave me goosebumps.
Then the routine "love triangle" starts. The sequence where Veronica finds herself lonely in the fully crowded pub is fantastic. Her acting skills have improved a lot. She has done a pretty good job. She took this role as a challenge and gave her best.
The second half gets boring but picks up towards the end. Randeep Hooda though very talented has too little a screen time. Diana Penty has done a decent job. Saif was as usual charming. Deepika added the spice factor to the movie. And the music is another important asset to the film.
Cocktail is not a great movie and Nothing compared to "Love Aaj Kal", which can be viewed multiple times, but all-in-all its a time paas movie.
District 9 (2009)
Great Movie!!!
Oh boy Oh boy... what a movie this was. I had no idea about the story and had not seen the trailers. So I was more than shocked to see the turn of events in the movie. I was awestruck.
The giant spaceship hovers over Johannesburg for over 2 decades without motion. Aliens are given shelter in District 9 after 3 months right below the spaceship. And our hero has to convince them to evacuate to District 10 for safety of people. Then, my friend the story takes a turn which takes us on a thrilling ride with spectacular action sequences, solid storyline, superb direction and great performances by the main characters.
The Aliens and the spaceship appear very real. The action sequences are intense and keep us glued to our seats. After Blood Diamond, I felt that this is one solid movie with great emotional touch and one that keeps us guessing what happens next. And of-course the ending was great too. If District 10 will be made that would be epic!
This is one of the greatest movies folks if you haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for, go ahead and enjoy the ride.
Minority Report (2002)
The movie is like a bitter tablet
I found this movie like a bitter tablet. It has the right stuff inside but is not honey-dipped or sugar coated. But what is important here is that IT works!
This is one of the rare movies which gets better with multiple viewing. I saw this movie on TV, I saw it because of Spielberg and Tom Cruise. What a combination! The movie is set in 2054, and the technology showed is spectacular. The discs, the computer screens, eye scanners, helicopters, cars, etc everything was very interesting and believable. The concept of the movie is very original and thought provoking. The way Anderton does his job is amazing. The first part of the movie is an introduction for us about how pre-crime works.
Slowly the story takes a roller coaster ride and keeps the audience glued to their seats. The story is very intriguing. Direction is fantastic. The part where Agatha leads Anderton to escape the cops is very very interesting. And there are many other interesting sequences throughout the movie including some twists. The concept of "echo" and "minority report" is very thought provoking. And the concept of seeing the future and having a choice to make a wise decision is very interestingly showcased.
Overall this is a no-nonsense movie. Very high on intellectual and technical level. But the problems I personally have with this movie are that it sometimes looks dull because of the background texture, Tom Cruise was like a puppet in the hands of Spielberg throughout the movie, it was difficult to connect with him because he dint show any expressions on his face, even in the action sequences. Agatha had performed well but was very irritating at times. Background score could have been better to add to the intensity of the drama. So the presentation of the movie was not good enough. Much like a bitter tablet which does its work but has bad taste. These are IMO the backdrops of the movie. But like I said it works!
Overall I rate it 9/10.
The Notebook (2004)
A very heart warming experience...
The Notebook is one of the rare movies that have an impact on you and stay with you long after watching them. This is a romantic movie but is very different from the routine pop-corn flicks, in that it is not clichéd and predictable. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams are so perfect in their roles that their romance is not just limited to the screen, the audience can feel the chemistry between them.
The relation between Allie and Noah is very beautifully showcased. Their romance, silly fights, their conversations, serious fights, etc all are depicted very naturally. The initial phase of their relation is beautiful and pure. They are mad for each other and are kissing for most of the time(and even got awards for it). Slowly as the conflict arises we cant help but feel for these poor couple. Every part of the story keeps us engaging and has a suspense element to it.
The only complaint I have is with the length. Had it been less lengthy it would have had more impact. Rachel McAdams has shown that she is a fantastic actor. I ve become a fan of her after watching this movie. James Marsden's part, though short has an important role to play in the story. The conflict that Allie faces intensifies as we move closer to the climax. The ending of the movie is very heart touching and very original. I wish I had a love story like that.
On the whole The Notebook is not just a movie but a very heart warming experience.
Knowing (2009)
Promising at first... disappointing in the end
I saw knowing on TV. I saw it because it had Nicholas Cage in it. After watching for 10 15 min, I was glued to the screen and dint make a move. I cursed the adds. I found the unfolding of the mystery very intriguing. The story, the plot very well crafted. The concept is very original and thought provoking.
There are even mind blowing scenes, you wont expect. as the movie was approaching its end my expectations were exponentially increasing. And when you are finally there, you wonder what the hell went wrong?! As the credits roll, you will be in a shock with a big question mark on your face and a disappointment in your heart.
Knowing had the potential to be a super great movie and even chances to land in Top 250. Had the direction, dialogs and plot been refined, this would have been a fantastic one. I think this movie indirectly teaches us a lesson that no matter how much we have it in us, if we don't execute with excellence we wont succeed.
Jannat 2 (2012)
surprisingly entertaining.
Saw Jannat2 few days back. Actually we were planning to go to Vicky Donor but it was not playing in nearby theaters so i thought we ll go to jannat2. I had not seen trailers and not listened the songs even. I thought it would suck but i just wanted to go to cinema for a break.
Well the film started off well with witty dialogs from two main characters Randeep Hooda and Emraan. Both have performed well and take the movie forward on their shoulders. Vulgarity is slowly finding its place in bollywood. The usage of bad language is interesting in the beginning but becomes unrealistic and forced in latter parts of the movie. The lead actress should have been different. She looks like Angelina Jolie at times. Her acting skills are OK. The part where Emran rises in his position and becomes more rich and successful is shown better in Jannat.
The plot is very very interesting, story, very well scripted with twists( some we can guess, others are mind blowing), dialogs are well written. So the writers of the movie did an excellent job. Coming to direction, Kunal Deshmukh has shown his talent in Jannat and Tum Mile. He has improved and refined himself with Jannat2. This is by far his best effort as a director. Some scenes are very interesting like revealing the twists and the conversation between Randeep Hooda and Manish Choudary(Mangal Singh). There is no dull moment even if there are they don't last long.
The ending part of the movie is very touching. I will not spoil it for you, go check it out for yourself. I had low expectations from the movie maybe that s the reason I liked it a lot. If you want to enjoy the movie go with low expectations. But I would definitely recommend it to everyone. Its not a family entertainer so go watch it with friends and you will enjoy it. Bollywood is changing and making serious films, which is a good sign.
P. S: Music is awesome too you will be singing the song "jannate kahan" on your way home.
Shame (2011)
very depressing yet bold movie
i saw this movie and was very depressed that day. Brandon was funny, smart, handsome, loner, etc. But he dint have friends, family and he doesn't believe in relationships. He stays alone in his apartment spending most of the time in sexual activities. At times audience feel disgusted by this guy, at times they feel sympathetic towards him. Steve McQueen is a genius of a director. His first movie Hunger was brilliant. His style of directing is very unique. He is greatly talented and has lot of potential. His subjects are totally out of the box and his love for film making reflects in his movies. Shame is a rare movie, brilliantly made. Acting is superb by Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. The background music adds up to the drama so much that you are involved in the movie and feel like you know this guy Brandon for real.
But there is no good message and hope shown here. Maybe because they wanted to make the film more realistic. Also at some places the long shots are very long and slow the pacing of the movie. I have this compliant even in Hunger where in certain parts the scenes were very lengthy.
Some movies you cannot forget long after watching them because they mess up your brain. Shame is one such movie. This movie is not for faint hearted.
The Great Dictator (1940)
Masterpiece by a Mastermnd
The Great Dictator is a very well crafted movie. More than a movie Chaplin treated this project as a work of art and beautifully crafted it. I ve not seen his other movies but soon i will check out all of them. The characters are as interesting as the dialogues. There is never a dull moment in the movie. You cant help but notice the wit and intelligence involved in the script writing, as the minutes pass by, once you are into the movie. The comedy comes out as a breath of fresh air and not even close to being dated. Chaplin shows his greatness not only as a writer, director, actor but also a great human being. The final speech is by far one of the best speeches ever you will listen. I highly recommend this movie to everyone.
Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi (2012)
Don't expect anything....
I had no expectations and was not disappointed so i ll advice you the same. the first 10-15 mins of the movie are, i think the best part of the movie with nice direction and comedy. the creativity shown in that part of the movie is lost slowly as the movie continues. let me first point out the good things about the movie: 1. there are not many useless boring songs. 2. a little bit of comedy at times. 3. nice portrayal of family values. now the bad things(according to me): 1. amala paul reminded me of priyanka chopra in kaminey with same hair style and dressing style. and no other shades of her were shown. she is generally good looking but was not in the movie. 2. sidharth had no scope to show his talent. 3. story....... 4. boring at times especially in second half. 5. nothing new. 6. most of the times i was thinking hw this part could have been done better..... so on the whole its a not even time paas movie.....
Sherlock (2010)
the best sherlock!!!
I first saw The hound of Baskerville to compare this with the original... and it was mind blowing then i followed all of them.... everything is perfect in this series, writing, direction, dialogs, acting..... The relation with Mrs Hudson is portrayed very well. Some of the scenes are so well written and executed that you cant take it out of your mind like the password of the Irene Adler's safe, sherlock's surprise appearance at the ending of the same episode..... and The Reichenbach fall was totally insane....I have given the DVD to my friends and they are boasting about it too.... now eagerly waiting for the 3rd season badly.... not only to find out how sherlock faked his death but also because this is some great stuff......
