Hadi Insallah (2014)
Underrated-Comedy is not under the hegemony of male actors
Don't get fooled by the 6 something rating the movie got so far. This is a solid comedy, Busra Pekin's character Pucca is utterly funny. She indeed proves against the odds that comedy is not under the hegemony of men in contemporary Turkish cinema. She is authentic, energetic and sincere; catching your hearth and oblige you laugh out loud occasionally. It is also a simple movie based on an easily anticipated script and embellished with the dull acting of male lead Murat Boz. He, who happened to be handsome, is obviously the wrong cast for the role.
Last word, not a 10, but not a 6 as well. Funnier than recent releases of renowned giants such as Cem Yilmaz or his namesake Yilmaz Erdogan. It is a promise of of 1 1/2 hr happiness.
Celal ile Ceren (2013)
What happens in Aksaray, (does not) stay in Aksaray
First of all, forget about the extremely low rating on IMDb, which was the result of mass rating rush organized by some Turkish internet user groups. The movie is not bad at all, for sure better than Sahan's renowned Recep Ivedik saga. Acting is good, humour is balanced. Yes there are bad jokes for that you are blessed with some very good ones. Be ready for regular obscenities, male street jargon and situational comedy.
The movie follows a storyline akin to Hangover, yet what happens in Aksaray does not stay in Aksaray just at the beginning of the movie. Afterwards, we watch lead actor Celal's self discovery within the realm of love, jealousy and profligacy and desperate chase after her fiancé Ceren. As a matter of fact, the story is universal.
Occasionally, you feel like watching a shameless episode of The Benny Hill Show, where several short scenes are articulated without considering the overall coherence of the movie. Nevertheless, it is a funny movie with a plausible story.
Berlin Kaplani (2012)
Berliner Tiger-Absolutely funny
Ata Demirer, renowned Turkish stand-up comedian and artist, came up with an interesting project; humbly translated as "Tiger of Berlin". It is the naive story of a 2nd (maybe 3rd?) generation Turkish guest worker in Germany, who has opted a boxing career over everything else. At first glance, it is a simple comedy drama setup between Berlin-Turkey. Nonetheless, Ata's nearly perfect representation of a Germanized-Turkish character (or vice versa), gives the movie its distinguished character. Anybody who spent some time with Turkish-Germans will smile, when they hear expressions such as "I looked a movie" instead of "I watched a movie", or "I wrote an exam" instead of "I take an exam" The script is simple, but intact. Characters are shallow, but carefully developed and acted. Story does not offer to many surprises, but it is absolutely funny. Unfortunately, the movie has not too much to offer for non-Turkish speakers, as well as for those who never had a German-Turkish friend. After all, it is probably the best movie Ata has ever made.
Çinar Agaci (2011)
Good Intentions, Mediocre Result
You will for sure leave the theater with a smiling face. The relationship between the grandmother and grandson will warm your heart. Broken families, however gathering every Sunday at the family picnic will fondle your optimism.
Nevertheless, let's be reasonable. The scenario is occasionally flawed; grandmother's sly pranks are far beyond convincing; Nurgul Yesilcay's career ambitions vs. motherhood endeavors are full of dull acting.
The movie is shot with good intentions yet cannot be salvaged from being mediocre. It is a happy movie though, just it.. Recommended for families with nothing else to do.
7 Kocali Hürmüz (2009)
Hilarious remake of the Turkish musical classic
Though disloyal to the original theatrical script, this very remake of "7 Husbands for Hürmüz" is one of the most hilarious remake of the Turkish musical classic. Director Ezel Akay's creative depiction of Ottoman Istanbul, Gülse Birsel's unprecedented self-esteem and lucid acting and Nurgül Yeşilçay's charm offer you an uninterrupted entertainment of 2 hours. The story evolves around 7 different men from 7 different ethnic and social backgrounds in Ottoman Turkey, wherein each of them fell in love with beautiful Hürmüz, who successfully manipulates and utilize them for her own good. At one instance, however, the men start realizing that Hürmüz is duping each and everyone of them. Unfortunately, the script is immensely embedded with equivocations, imitations and accent jokes, which might constitute a rather dull lost-in-translation script for non-Turkish speakers. The movie is unlikely be a milestone for Turkish cinema, nevertheless, it was definitely one of the most colorful, cheerful and best movies made in 2009.
