An Exercise of, Because I Can, from Nolan
What's imax worthy here?
This story would have been better and had made more sense if all of Oppenheimers moral qualms would have been dealt with before the bomb goes off in the test. This way in the final act, the explosion could have been the bell that has been rung and can't be unrung. Adding Gravitas to the story. Instead, after the test bomb goes off, the movie grinds on for another hour...
Although it is Oppenheimers story, as such the movie failed to portray the wider implications of Oppenheimers doing. The effects on Japan itself. With that, Nolan failed spectacularly to deal with this subject matter in a critical way. It deforms into a merely pseudo intellectual exercise of vapid grandeur.
Imagine Germany produced a Movie about the concentration camps and merely brushes off the wider implications with, We needed to do it to end the war, like it's done in Nolan's latest work as justification for the US to commit this heinous crime, twice. Therefore, the attempt of portraying Oppenheimers guilt falls flat on the face for me, a mere afterthought, a noisy one at that.
Soundtrack:
As seems typical with Nolan's efforts the soundtrack tends to drown out everything else in parts. Towards the end, when Oppenheimer is questioned by Strauss goons, there is this cacophony of noise so annoying and unnecessary it actually is painful. I get what Nolan tried to achieve. However he choose to submit the audience by literally have the movie shout at it and beat the audience into submission.
The story telling here requires the viewer to pay one hundred percent attention for all of it. Even then a second viewing is needed. Haunting imagination that...
The acting is great, shame about the script
This is a snooze fest of epic proportions, not for everyone.
The Shape of Water (2017)
How can this Dreck win an Oscar????
Saw the Shape of Water, well most of it...
The movie is basically about a mute woman who falls in love with a fish man.
She is mute but can hear. She is a cleaner in a secret government facility. Main protagonist is seen half naked and masturbating in her bathtub within the first ten minutes of the movie, apparently because she is lonely, cant seem to find a partner within her own species and has otherwise no ambitions in life other than masturbating, cleaning and Zoophilia... Sooo, said facility receives fish man for studies and planned dissection, which is not happening cause lonely, mute "Zoophile" is kidnapping fish man for her own sexual gratification. This is dressed up in the movie as her falling in love with it, because she has a disability or the condition of being mute and fish man taking her for what she is, because fish man isn't judging her like the rest seem to be as well as saving fish man from his fate.
Is this what the movie industry is descending into? Selling sex with different species better known as bestiality? Depicting people with conditions like being mute as the losers of society because they don't conform to societal norms and standards of this era? Like it was in the Goonies for example or countless villains who usually have a disability of sorts. This garbage is intellectually so lazy downright dumb that I didn't even finish it. Apparently she swims off with her sex pet in the end.
If you ask me, save yourself the time and go for a walk, bake something, or get laid.
Utter neoliberal rubbish, downright perverse
Baby Driver (2017)
Teenage boredom
Just saw this in cinema. It seems to have been written with a teenage audience in mind that doesn't ask any questions, or has demands like story or character development or narrative flow and just buys the movie as is. IMDb rating of 8.6 at the time of writing this here... how...?
My gripe with this one. The love story overall felt flat and emotionless and awkwardly cheesy with matching dialogue. The shots fired in the shooting scenes were actually synchronised with the soundtrack playing, with that giving the movie a corny / cheesy feeling. Awkward and clichéd one liners, acting from teeny main leads wasn't believable at times. Car scenes were OK, hence 2 stars, the ending was drawn out, felt rushed and discombobulated. I didn't really care for any of the characters tbh, apart from Jamie Fox.
Overall this movie felt like watching a teenagers room. Everything was there just unorganised, messy and one doesn't quite know what to make of it...
Wouldn't recommend to watch it in cinema, wait for Netflix release or DVD. One time watch and quite forgettable, sadly.
Wonder Woman (2017)
Awful rubbish
Saw Wonder Woman yesterday... quite frankly it's actually really bad. Story line all over shop, character development, all over the shop, main Charakter Wonder Woman stumbles through the movie like a naive 16 year old imbecile, she's a goddess for crying out loud, the logic for not telling her who she really is, screwed up and all over the shop. The way she kills Ares in the end, could have been achieved by telling her who she really was from the get go and a full 2hrs earlier, granted, it would have been a short movie but better. I'm not even getting into the feminism part of it.
In Greek mythology Amazons were mainly concerned with war and were rather brutal. To be expected if they were the supposed children of Harmonia and Ares. Yet in the movie they are portrait as peace loving, just, fair, superior beings to all mankind. But also especially superior to men who are essential for procreation and useless otherwise, really?!
It wouldn't have hurt if "Wonder Woman" would have hit the gym before filming commenced. But I guess if your main character believes that love is the ultimate answer to all of mankind problems, there's no need for that either. The rainbows one can vomit, lightning actually in this case, with all that fuzzy love feeling are blinding your opponents into oblivion, which she kinda did... there you go... The women training her in the movie looked fitter and in better shape than Gal Gadot despite being twice her age, at least in the movie. All this seemed like a bad parody of Thor and captain America, without the humour, without a plot, and atrociously bad acting from an otherwise good cast.
So all this really is, a quick money maker with main selling point: "Female Lead"
I am all for women kicking ass, in movies as a well as real life, here however, to me, it's all to artificial and contrived.
For example, in iron man one can believe the change Stark is going through, for one, out of necessity, shrapnel in his chest, for the other he decided to use his wealth for the good because he actually sees what his weapons are causing.
Captain America, he's full of idealistic "Americaness" alright but is cool, most important the character does not come across as naive. WW did not need to be so clueless. As far as the plot goes she's naive because she was sheltered from the world, fine, but yet she had access to literature about how Humans procreate but not about how the world outside her realm operates? And the character seemed to struggle almost seems to resist to accept the reality she finds herself in. Whereas good old captain America, after 70 years of sleep, just keeps kicking ass.
Her character development seems awkwardly written. To me, the biggest disservice to the movie. Overall the movie also felt sadly discombobulated. And then there is the WWI one setting... no one is expecting historic accuracy here, however, to try to glorify or find good in something that was so absolute and inherently not good. More specific to bring in the gas, as was used in WWI on a massive scale for the first time in modern warfare on top WWI having been a downright horror show in recent human history, dunno mate, it's bound to fail in a movie like that.
Marvel also incorporated WWII in Capo America, but didn't even try to bring in the concentration camps for example, it would have opened a can of worms the audience wouldn't have bought and it's not what captain America was about. Also the narrative flow is way better with Marvel I find.
Me Before You (2016)
Me Before You - Review
Where to begin...? Alright, Emilia Clarkes eyebrows are atrocious...
As for the story. Rich boy has an accident ends up with a spinal cord injury and paralysed and fails to accept his fate and sticks to his decision to kill himself at the end because he's missing his old life.
My issues with this stinker of a movie. 1. There is absolutely no depth to the main characters. One dimensional, materialistic morons who are absolutely unrelatable. 2. What is the message of this movie? 3. I'd find it easy as well to smile at the end, in memory of the person I loved, if that person would have left me rich after passing away. 4. One of the points, if not THE point of this tripe seems to be "Once you are in a wheelchair you are out." WOW, this kind of rubbish in 2017. However as far as this movie goes, the before the injury and after the injury was not teased out, kinda essential if your main character kills himself at the end and you want your audience to either understand his decision or to root for him. 5. If the audience would have had a chance to relate to both before and after injury, it would have been a better movie. 6. If the actual struggles and challenges of living with this injury would have been portrayed in a realistic enough way, it would have been a better movie. 7. If the main actress would have been able to actually act, it would have been a better movie. 8. If the main character would have been portrayed as a human being capable of making decisions for himself and people respected and supported him, regardless if they agreed or not, it would have been a better movie.
This movie is so one dimensional it is not even comical. It utterly misrepresents living with a spinal injury and relations to personal assistants.
Transfer (2010)
Modern slavery
***This one has Spoilers*** Watched this movie and i am not sure what to make of it... In short, Poor black people are offered the chance to let old rich white people take over their bodies by means of transferring the minds of the white folks. The people involved, black and white, are given a contract and if agreed mind transfer takes place voluntary. The minds of the black people is allowed the take over for 4 hours at night. The hosts fall in love to the very dislike of the white peoples minds. Herrmann, the old white guy, describes this as. "While we sleep, Herrmann and Anna, those Ni**ers f*ck with each other..." So Sarah, the host woman, gets pregnant. Now this is also disliked by Apolain, host body to Hermann's mind.
Here already is the first question for me. If this should become reality, shouldn't it be made sure that racism isn't an issue? Now Anna/Sarah stops taking her medication so Sarah can speak during the day with Herrmann, which they then stop taking altogether later in the movie.
The hosts, Apolain and Sarah, forge a plan to escape all this. Also if the medication isn't taken the host mind seems to prevail during the day.
The movie has taken a turn for the ridiculous and all it seems to amount to and serves is, an exercise in intellectual masturbation.
The movie to me portrays just another form and new way of slavery. After all, in this movie, poor humans from third world countries are exploited so that white rich people may extend their lives. It utterly escapes me at which point this movie is meant to be intellectual stimulating.
Moving on, Hermman and Anna are running into problems because they are now black. Hermann is being told that members of his sports club are complaining about his appearance. What did he expect? Sarah gets complexes about her baby, will it be hers or Anna's... ? Later in the movie...
Sarah/Anna still pregnant, goes to Menzana, the company which transfers the minds, with Hermann. There they are shown how their child will look like. Anna throws in the question who's child it will be. And they have to make up their minds, because the next day the three months are up. At which point the original bodies will be cremated. Next day they return and sign the documents. Both haven't taken their medication. So Sarah compliments Dr. Menzel (or Mengele?) about the sculptures on her table. Same compliment was given by Anna in the beginning. Thus they are being found out, also the company installed security cameras in their home and of course witnessed them not playing ball. Big fuss ensues from Apolain how evil the company is, bla bla. Bearing in mind that all four involved had been fully informed what is going down on them.
In the end. The minds are being transferred back to Hermann and Anna. Host Bodies are being restored to before, baby is being aborted, company wins. Hermann doesn't quite make it and dies during or after the transfer. Anna, which has cancer survives him. I suppose that is the twist in the movie...
While there is definitely potential in the story it, it could have been better if the portrayal of the technology would have been more on the positive side of things. E.g. Person born with blindness or other crippling conditions would be able to use a healthy body.
All this drivel achieves is showing the ignorance of the characters of the white rich people, the willingness of those people/characters to enslave other bodies for their benefit, the oldest sins committed in the newest ways, and drivel is set in a country which should know better to start with, but then what country could be better? The acting is fine to me. Purely the premise is rubbish to me, with that 1 star.
Maybe i'm taking this with a to realistic view on things portrayed in this movie? But I am wondering, if a movie would be made about the bodies of Jews being used by German minds, if people would find it equally stimulating as said here? Somehow doubt it though.
It can only be hoped that this stays science fiction.
Choose (2011)
Don't bother
The idea is rather interesting but the execution was poorly done and drags on. It is cheesy right from the start, as one would expect from a C-Movie, a rating which this movie achieved effortlessly. The daughter seems to do her fathers job, in which he doesn't seem to be very interested... As creepy it might be to have something like that happening in the real world, as uninteresting it is to watch here! Editing of the movie seemed to have been huge challenge also. Which in part makes this movie look like a school project shot on a weekend, thus the cheap C-Movie appearance. To summarize, slow boring movie acting is poor, character development also. Uninteresting and dull!
The United States of Leland (2003)
Pretentious alright
***This one has Spoilers*** What have we got here? A middle class family with an autistic son, one of the daughters is doing drugs in and out of rehab like Amy winehouse herself (she'd have made her proud) the other one has her boyfriend living with her in her parents house.
Leland's father is a screw up and lets his son know, through sending him plane tickets to travel the globe, that he's there. Further his father is exploiting his own sons situation, after his son killed the autistic boy, by taking notes for a book he intends to write. The mother is bringing their son up on her own.
Leland meets that older woman, on one of his trips to New York, and stays in contact with her until he sleeps with her after she is divorced (dream come true with 15 especially with a good looking MILF like that).
Leland get's to know that autistic son through Becky (autistic boys drug doing sister) Leland sees sadness everywhere and decides to kill the autistic boy because there is sadness in his eyes and he wouldn't have a normal life?
To me Leland shows psychopathic traits...
How on earth is killing an autistic person justifiable...??? The Viewer is meant to understand Leland and how he arrived at his decision to kill the boy? All the other inter human relationships and actions portrayed in this film are relationships thousands of people have and worse.
Leland had it coming to be stabbed to death in prison.
This movie, to me, is utter rubbish. Good acting though otherwise just drivel for pseudo intellectuals and they seem to write reviews in abundance, rating this 7 and above, here on IMDb. I'd give it an eight for its pretentious pseudo intellectual bullshit, however because it is so pretentious one star it is. Stay away from this piece of "intellectual masturbation" . Thanks for ye time
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
Oh Boy
This movie was shot beautifully and that's about it. Credibility wise it is laughable. It fits in with those movies which were made from comics like "The Punisher" for example. ***Spoiler*** Clyde Shelton ( Gerard Butler) dies at the end. He is being blown up by his own bomb in his solitary cell he intended for the major, which she actually deserved according to the script.
The script is ridiculous worth a one time watch though. In the real world any government would have killed Clyde Shelton if he went rogue. Well, another one of those "Marvel Comic films" which can be hit and miss.
If you have nothing better to do and no girl or boyfriend at the moment, to get laid, give it a go. Or watch it with your Girl or Boyfriend and get laid after. Nothing Special going on on this one.
A Perfect Getaway (2009)
Gee was it written for 12 year old people???
***Contains Spoilers*** Just finished this movie and I'm disappointed, hugely so. The first half is actually not bad at all, the problem for me begins, like with so many others here, with the 2nd half. Zahn/Jovovich are deliberately portrayed completely wrong in the first half. *** Spoiler***I guessed in 1st half that Zahn/Jovovich are the murderers.*** The twist, many find so awe inspiring, is an insult to the audience above the age of 12 years. To me it goes to show that the a lot of people do not demand any thinking of a movie, just gorgeous looking women and men, great location and that seems to be enough to make people think a movie must be good. The performances were good as far as playing the lines go. Altogether it is just a mediocre movie with the lousy so called "twist" in it. Forwarded the second half. Disappointment big time.
Fast Five (2011)
Utter waste of time
This movie sucked from start to finish, actually i fell asleep watching it the first time. So had to watch it again, well from the part i fell asleep. No Spoilers only so much, the acting is total rubbish, cliché like and painting the the average American stereotype totally over the top. F&F 3 was rubbish already, badly cut, totally incoherent lousy acting and so on... Vin Diesel i do expect more of you!!! Dreadful piece of movie Junk, the production team must have gone to town on the movie rating here on IMDb 7.8 yeah right, you gotta be a) a total numb nut American finding this trash good or b) from the production team to give this garbage more than 1. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! UNLESS YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO.
