A bit of criticism.
Regarding the movie:
1. Very poorly done, Ben Stein is extremely unconvincing throughout the movie. And plain boring. 2. Nothing substantial is said about what ID really is, neither are any of the arguments against ID properly shown or explained. 3. See this movie, it is ridiculous in every way. (Example; Ben Stein is appalled having "realized" that scientist in the U.S. are evil and a part of a great conspiracy and says: "I needed some time to think, so I travelled to the birthplace of this idea." (Refering to Darwinism.) And then he gets on a plane to Great Britain to visit Darwins house, Down house! Not really a realistic choice for someone who is confronted with heavy thoughts, is it?)
There is a lot more to be said about his piece of crap, but I'll leave that to someone else (and its probably a really funny movie if your high, drunk, or sane).
Seriously, a really crappy movie, in all aspects, even if you don't consider the inflamed theme.
Regarding ID:
Some simple questions always seem to be left out when reasoning about this kind of thing, and especially in this movie.
OK, let's say there is ID. Who did it? God?
Let's say god to start with. Next question, which god? Christian, Muslim, Jewish? Some claim they are all the same (ridiculous in itself, but let's play along).
So it could be god, according to the ID theory. But doesn't it seem weird that one god did all that? Hinduism seems more likely. More gods to lighten the burden. So let's rule out the "one-god-theory", since that's just unlikely, several gods is more likely. But wait, what about the norse gods? Whops, forgot them, so it's the hindu gods or the norse gods. Oh, wait, there are more gods than that in human history isn't there? All the nature religions, doesn't that seem even more likely? Several gods, all who already had specific task in controlling nature.
But they didn't write the bible or any other "great" text, did they? Nothing even comes close to those things, so nature gods that control everything and its evolution but doesn't have the power to be even among the top three major religions? Seems awfully weird... Maybe it wasn't gods at all, since they all seem incompetent att a closer look. But wait! Aliens! Of course, we've all seen sci-fi, and we all know that aliens are really intelligent. Cool, aliens seem more likely, a lot of them, doing weird supernatural things and creating other worlds. Best idea so far. Just the one tiny problem left. Who made them?
Well, the only reasonable explanation is of course that they realised, after becoming really really intelligent that they had to create themselves, so they did a few experiments, including us and everything on our planet and a bit more, then, when they knew exactly how to do it, they went back in time, created themselves and then everything else that "required evolution".
Sounds stupid doesn't it? And I didn't even give the "one-god-theory" a chance! Although everyone who believes in "him" or perhaps "her" can insure that their god is more likely than several, there isn't more proof that they are right than that I am is there? So, if I say that aliens did it, went back in time and created themselves and so on, that would be just as likely as any other explanation. And if I actually believed in it that (from the ID point of view) it makes it even more likely.
Funny, how some people have such a hard time realising that nature is far more complex than we realise, and that that is why we need a simpler explanation, something unifying, like god, or gods for that matter... It's not the other way around. Since we all know that if there is anything we can learn from history regarding nature, it's that it is much much much more complex than we originally thought.
I would have guessed that would have made more people have faith in nature, than in gods...
