Maniac (2018)
Kill a few hours
If you liked the time you wasted on "Lost" and you like "The Man in the High Castle" and you like sci-fi mind control, this is for you.
If you are a Jonah Hill fan and want to watch something better, try "He won't get far on foot."
"Maniac" is pretty nonsensical, loved the cutting edge computer technology, the sets, the vignettes, but it really did not leave me yearning for more.
Chappaquiddick (2017)
Worth Watching
While I am old enough to remember the event, it was certainly overshadowed by the moon landing which occurred at the same time and it was only as I got older did I read and understand more about the events which occurred.
I read a review by a person who stated they read over 20 books on the incident and they gave it a very good rating. I enjoyed it for the acting and writing and, of course, the early depiction of what we now know as the political elite. Bruce Dern was great as Joe Kennedy even though he only spoke 6 words, "alibi" being one of them.
NOW, if they would only do a movie about true Russian collusion that Ted Kennedy was involved in to stop Reagan, that may actually be more interesting and informative to Americans.
Strange Angel (2018)
Interesting, so far
Definitely more interesting than either Westworld (S02) and Yellowstone. At least, so far (3 episodes in).
The story, based on an actual person, along with the supporting characters and side (or maybe main?) plot, is very interesting.
It sort of reminds me of "Halt and Catch Fire" in its development so far. Not sure why AMC originally backed this and then scratched it. Could have been a bad mistake for them.
Pop some corn, give it a couple episodes. After 3, I'm in.
Westworld (2016)
Clipping my toenails is more interesting than season 2
As so many others have said, season 1 was very good, divergent stories all coming together.
Much like "True Detective", season 2 is a hot mess.
One of my toenails hit an empty beer can and made a cool "clink" sound. That was more interesting than any episode of season 2.
Disclaimer: I am old enough to remember seeing the original Westworld movie in 1973 for fifty cents.
The Post (2017)
Maybe someday...
Maybe someday someone will make a movie about the cover-up, and basic denial, of the holocaust by the nyt... now, that would be something.
After watching this fairy tale though, all I can say about it is drivel.
Mom and Dad (2017)
Loved It
Script, casting, plot, whatever. This is not a movie on which those things are critiqued.
This is a movie you just watch and laugh at and have a couple terror moments and enjoy.
Find a Friday or Saturday night, pop up some corn, and give it a whirl.
The Ballad of Lefty Brown (2017)
Fun, despite its flaws
No, it was not the worst movie I have ever watched, nor was it a waste of almost 2 hours.
Sure, you can see what's coming a mile away but it was not a zzzzzzzz snore fest either.
If you love westerns, and a decent story, along with some really fine acting by Pullman, pop up some corn and give it a try.
El Camino Christmas (2017)
Kudos to Netfllx
Will it win an Oscar or an Emmy? Heck no. Was it fun to watch? Yeah it was.
Kudos to Netflix for making this. Tim Allen really shined and it was great to see Kurtwood Smith also. It was a good time-occupier, had a good ending. Cinematography? Script? Sound? whatever, it was fun and well cast.
Hope Netflix can keep producing things like this and "Godless". You gotta swing the bat to make a hit and "El Camino Christmas" was a solid single (while Godless was a stand up double, maybe a slide-in triple).
Godless (2017)
The western you have been waiting for
After watching four of the seven episodes:
Beautiful production, great scenery, acting, sets, cinematography, interesting story.
I am watching it slowly because I have been waiting for another decent western since "Hell on Wheels". I won't go into the entire story line which has been covered in other reviews but will say, it is worth your time.
Merritt Weaver ("Zoey" in Nurse Jackie and "Dr. Denise Cloyd" in Walking Dead) runs away in this. She is great. With actors like Jeff Daniels, Sam Waterston, Scott McNairy ("Gordon" in Halt and Catch Fire) and others, it is a difficult task to rise above but she really shines here. McNairy is great also. Not to take away from the expected excellent performances of Daniels and Waterston (who were together previously in The Newsroom).
Each episode is over an hour. This is a series to be enjoyed, savored, and watched slowly.
No Activity (2017)
Will something ever happen?
Finished two episodes of this series and really have to wonder how actors like JK Simmons and Bob Odenkirk are involved in this along with the likes of Will Ferrell and Tim Meadows.
The only "activity" so far has come right at the end of each of the first two episodes which were both laden with long discussions, usually between two people, about nothing.
You have your two cops sitting in a car. You have two people sitting in a warehouse. You have two police dispatchers, one of which is new to the job. There is a hint of some type of illegal activity, possibly involving smuggling of humans or drugs that has yet to develop.
If you like a lot of slow moving, non-funny banter about nothing, you may like it. Then again, maybe there actually will be some "activity" in coming episodes.
Damnation (2017)
Let me save you some time.
Pretty simple. Capitalism bad and evil, oppression of the workers and the poor. Socialism good, use violence to redistribute goods and wealth.
If you love Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Kim Jong Un, Marx, Engels, or Lenin, you will like this show.
There is no redeeming quality in either the acting, sets, or cinematography that can save this story. Save your time and watch "Deadwood" again, or if you want a great "man vs establishment" western, watch "Hell on Wheels".
