Little House on the Prairie: 100 Mile Walk (1974)
Season 1, Episode 3

Hard Times Ahead
21 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Hard times hit the Ingalls. A hailstorm wreaks havoc on their wheat crop and threatens their future livelihood. Charles sets off on foot to look for work outside Walnut Grove. He takes a dangerous job with a couple new friends he meets along the way. The three men miss their wives and children at home, making for a heartfelt scene that proves real men have feelings just like women. Meanwhile at home, Caroline tries to save whats left of the flattened wheat crop with a group of other prairie wives.

Like all Little House on the Prairie episodes, this one has no shortage of touching drama, fine acting, and an interesting storyline with likable characters. Everyone pulls together to do what they must to survive the hardships of farming on the American frontier.

Nothing exciting under the stairs...
21 January 2024
This horror mystery movie started out interesting but took a direct nosedive. It had potential to be a chilling, creepy horrorfest but shortly into the story it got downright ridiculous. I rolled my eyes throughout, hoping it would somehow get better but it kept getting worse with each scene. Bad acting, script and overall plot. The comedy aspect made it even more awkward. By the end, I wanted to scream because it was so far-fetched as opposed to screaming out of fear. Two hours wasted and a whole lot of needless anticipation. The name was the best part of the movie! Pass this one unless you like cheesy horror flicks with comedy elements. You don't know whether to laugh or flinch. Worst movie ever!

Different
15 January 2024
While this movie was not typically my kind of film, I ended up liking it by the end. The synopsis was decidedly original, with good performances by the leading cast. We see a very young Natalie Portman here. Overall, it was a bit too graphically violent for my taste, with a dark depressing tone, therefore I'm not sure I'd watch it twice. The murder scenes were so bloody I had to look away. This might not bother some people, but it's definitely not for the faint of heart or young children. I don't generally seek out movies about hit men, assasins, gansters, etc, but I was watching this at somebody's house. They favored violent films and chose this movie so I sat through it. I was distracted and didn't fully concentrate on the entire film, which warrants a potential second viewing. I'm just not looking forward to revisiting the graphic violence, so therefore I'm undecided about watching it again.

A Lesson In Perserverence
7 January 2024
This moving, tear inducing two part feature walks the veiwer through the hills and valleys that life often presents to otherwise good, hard-working, honest people. A realistic depiction of how life can be normal one day and challenged by unforeseen circumstances the next. How we get through the bad times is all in how we confront our challenges, as the Wilders must learn to do throughout the episode.

In part one of Days of Sunshine Days of Shadow, Laura and Almanzo face difficult times in their marriage after he catches diptheria and is on bedrest. During this time, he can't tend the fields and therefore worries about their wheat crop and their future. Laura is pregnant and can't teach at the school. They fall into the terrifying prospect of financial hardship. He pushes himself too hard one evening during a hailstorm after his recovery and ends up suffering from a debilitating stroke that puts him down indefinitely.

Left partially incapacitated, he loses the will to try to walk again. His sister, Eliza Jane Wilder, travels from Minneonapolis to help care for him. She does more harm than good, enabling him to rely on other people to eat, get around, make decisions, etc. He stops thinking for himself, giving his sister the reins to his life as he sits around in a wheelchair wallowing in self pity. Laura sees what's happening and tries to encourage her husband to be more self sufficient to no avail.

In part two of this episode, the days of shadow continue for the Wilders. A damaging twister, future uncertainty, disagreements, and Almanzo's continued downward spiral into defeat persist. Baby Rose is born, offering a small ray of sunshine amidst the darkness. Laura begins to lose hope herself following a devastating loss that threatens everything she and Manly worked so hard for.

After self reflection, Almanzo begins to think for himself again. With the love, kindness and support of Charles, he finds a newfound sense of perserverence and faith inside himself, and together the two men set out on rebuilding his life with Laura.

While everyone does a fine job, with this dark-themed material, the acting by the two main leads is phenomenal. At the end of the episode, the sunshine peeks through again reminding us that while life isn't always easy, the shadows don't last forever. The message I get from the content is that we shouldn't give up even when things seem hopeless. Keep plowing ahead, and in the end, the good outweighs the bad.

Enjoy! 😊

New Directions
7 January 2024
In this episode, without recapping every little detail and completely spoiling the show for new viewers, Charles and Mary Ingalls travel by train to Chicago. Charles is thrilled to represent Walnut Grove in the farmer's convention, and Mary to reconnect with her old sweetheart, John Jr at the cotillion dance he mentioned in a letter. Trouble is, the Ingalls arrive unannounced. This creates unforeseen obstacles further into the episode. Times have changed dramatically in more ways than one, at the grange and in John Jr's personal life as well. John Jr is no longer the country boy who left Walnut Grove to pursue his aspirations as a writer.

In the big city, so different from their little prairie town, the Ingalls are an anomaly with their prairie clothes and small town mannerisms. Things start to happen during the episode that indicate life has gone in new directions at the grange convention and in matters of the heart. Big city politics, distance, career choices and time change people for the long term.

Old Flame
31 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Starting off,, I want to say that I always enjoy episodes that feature Hester Sue. She's a strong, independent character that brings a lot to the show.

In this episode, her estranged ex husband Sam shows up in Walnut Grove looking for work. He also has an ulterior motive in that he wants to reconnect with Hester Sue.

It soon becomes obvious she wants nothing to do with him after he destroyed their marriage with chronic drinking, gambling and infidelity.

He gains the respect and trust of everyone he meets, even Mrs Oleson, which is decidedly rare. He swears to Hester Sue that his addictions are a thing of the past.. Before long, Hester Sue starts warming up to him again. This happens following a heart to heart talk with Caroline Ingalls.

Hester Sue decides to give her ex husband another chance. On the day of their second wedding, she learns that he is hiding things from her. Others knew that well before she did but felt it wasn't their place to confront her. The episode is bittersweet. I feel for both characters.. I'm completely able to put myself in the shoes of both because I've been in this situation myself.

Great Film
1 June 2011
Beautifully acted on the part of the lead characters, and a very absorbing film. Have Kleenex nearby, as it will have you crying by the final scene. I fell in love with it, being a Streep fan, and automatically decided it is one of the best films I have ever seen. I am not usually one to watch courtroom dramas, but this movie is irresistible. It walks through the life of an unhappy, disconnected couple and the custody battle over their young son after the wife leaves the home to find herself. One of the better films of the 1970s, right alongside The Last Picture Show, another favorite of mine. If you haven't seen Kramer Vs Kramer, give it a watch.

I give it an A+ rating.

Our House (1986–1988)

Short-lived drama left a lasting memory
5 May 2011
I watched this show as a little girl and it brings back many sweet memories. My little sister and I used to roll play the episodes, because our parents were strict about what we watched, so this show was special to us. We saw very little TV that wasn't news or cartoons, and it was magical for us. We loved Diedre Hall and Shannon Doherty the most, and the little girl who played Molly. We had a major crush on the boy who played the son, lol. I wish it would have had airtime longer than it did. Happy to see from reviews that other people saw the good in this short-lived series. It probably will never come out on DVD, on account of it's short life, but I will always remember it. One episode that really effected me was the one in which David was injured on his bike. I remember thinking the character might die. The earth quake episode was equally effecting. ANd who wouldn't love Wilfred Brimly? He was awesome in Our House. I think it helped his oatmeal commercials gain popularity. :)
