Hotel Lux (2011)
So much fun!
I am attending a film festival in Porto and so far this was the best movie in competition. I don't watch a lot of European films because they usually don't open in Portugal, but I try to use this opportunities to watch different movies and this time I wasn't disappointed. It's a story of two comedy actors in Berlin in 1939. One of them plays Hitler and the other Stalin to a room full of Nazi officers. The beginning is absolutely great and I could't stop laughing. With the war both comedians have to run and trying to reach Hollywood they end up in Moscow. At this point the film looses a bit of its initial vigor but I enjoyed it anyway and although the end is a bit predictable, it is still a very enjoyable movie and totally worth the time.
Birdsong (2012)
What a disappointment
A long time ago i read this book and I was totally immersed in it. Since then I have tried to read all of Sebastian Faulks novels and so far I enjoyed all of them although this one remained my favorite. I also totally enjoy war time stories. I had huge expectations about this series and when i got hold of it I just could't resist watching it right away. Unforntunatelly after the first half hour I was totally bored. The acting wasn't too good, the story dragged for ages when everybody knew what was going on for a looooong time. I contemplated not watching the second half but I decided to give it a try and was even more disappointed by it. I read the novel a long time ago and as such I didn't really remember the end so I was expecting to find some point in the end, but unfortunately I must say there was none...
Glorious 39 (2009)
A bit strange
I always enjoy watching BBC films, always very well acted and usually an interesting story that makes you think. This one promised quite a lot: a great cast including Jeremy Northam, Bill Nighy and Romola Garay, a plot in the first year of the second world War, it seemed like a recipe for a great movie. Unfortunately may parts of the story seemed to weird to be true and in the end I didn't understand if the girl was simply crazy. Dead bodies all around her, people talking about secrets and dropping dead afterwards without a lot of explanations, her being locked up in a room and drugged, characters that appear without explanation and stare just as if it was a horror film and in the end nothing is quite clarified... Just totally mystifying...
Koi no tsumi (2011)
Strange and violent
In Portugal there are few opportunities to watch oriental movies and whenever I get the chance I try to watch them. It's such a different culture that I truly get fascinated by its movies. Currently I am watching a film festival in Porto, Fantasporto, that regularly features this kind of films and not all of them are fantasy films. Anyway, I watched this one last night and I must say I was a bit taken aback by it. I can understand the dullness of the housewife and her desire for something different, but I just can't understand the craziness of the college professor and its aim. Was she just crazy or did she had another interest in bringing the housewife to a life of prostitution? Totally weird or was just that a case of cultural differences?
Im Himmel, unter der Erde - Der jüdische Friedhof Weißensee (2011)
Great Film
I enjoyed this movie immensely. It tells the story of a Jewish cemetery in Berlin but much more than just that. It tells the story of some of the people that have a connection with it, the people that worked there, whose parents or grandparents are buried. It also gives an account of the 20th century in Berlim with historical footage showing the main events of the city's life. And it is not just a story about Jews but also about many other people: students, visitors and even of a young family that lives in the grounds. The work behind a cemetery as this one is quite huge and it is definitely a place I would like to visit if I go to Berlin again. It's a wonderful park in the middle of the city full of history. Really worth seeing.
