I Am Soldier (2014)
Not too shabby, unexpectedly
I never heard about this movie before I watched it, and quite frankly, I wasn't expecting I would sit through the whole thing. But I actually came to like it. Having seen many special forces selection documentaries, I liked how this focused on just one main character, instead of some random soldiers, whom we never get to learn about, as in the documentaries. As for realism, I found the selection training to be quite realistic. That is, it seems to fit very well with all the documentaries, but who really knows 'till you been there yourself? As for the lone action scene in the movie, I found it a bit lacking. It could have been a lot worse though. It's a low budget movie, but they generally used what they had well.
An alright movie, just one thing majorly annoyed me: There is SO much use of "black screen". Sometimes with sound, other times with nothing. At times I felt like 20% of the movie showed a black screen.
Tour of Duty (1987)
This series means a lot to me
Being from Denmark, I had never heard of this series before I was about 20 years old. In 2006 I was deployed to Iraq with the Danish Army, and I found the TOur of Duty complete series DVD in a store on base. I bought it and I am so glad I did. As I watched it on my own "Tour of Duty" it really made me care a lot about the people in the show. I even recognized a few of the issues the soldiers in the series faced. Further more I was really impressed with the military accuracy the series had. Of course some things were a bit far fetched, but generally it is very realistic. One negative thing about the show is probably what they used too many "redshirt" characters.
Evil Dead II (1987)
Gore you say??
After buying Peter Jackson's Braindead some time ago, I decided to give the extreme gore genre a try. I tried another of PJ's movies, Bad Taste, and I didn't like it at all. After this mistake, I did some research, so I wouldn't end up with another (in my opinion) "bad" movie. After doing some internet surfing I decided to buy Evil Dead 2. After buying it started watched it; and here it comes: It was a huge disappointment! The biggest disappointment was probably the gore. A couple of times in the movie, you'll see huge amounts of blood squirting from the monsters, the walls etc. That could have been really cool/fun, if it wasn't for one thing: The blood is yellow, black or some other lame color! (They did it to get the age rating down). Blood should red, End of story! There was one scene where the blood actually had the real color, and in my opinion it was the best scene in the movie. Maybe `blood of all kinds of colors' will work for you, but I think it's the worst idea in film history! And to all those people who, for some reason, think there's a lot of gore in it: Where is it? You don't even see Ash cut of his own hand! (which would have looked cool, if you ask me). The best features of the movie, is actually the `making of' included on the DVD. And as you might figure out; When the `making of' is better than the actual movie, how good can it be?
I know a lot of people are calling it the best movie ever made, but that yellow blood just totally ruined it for me. Who knows if you'll like the movie, but it sure doesn't work for me.
Bad Taste (1987)
Rather disappointed
I bought Dead Alive (aka Braindead) on VHS and i just loved it! I done know why, but gore IS funny! After seeing it, I decided to try another of Peter Jackson's old movies. I chose Bad Taste instead of Meet The Fibles (or what-ever it's called). When I watched the movie I was rather disappointed. I knew that I shouldn't expect the same quality and humour as Dead Alive, but I still aimed too high. In my opinion the acting is pretty bad. I don't know if that just the way they talk in New Zealand, but the dialog sounds really fake. The movie just reeks of the word "amateur". And another thing: After seeing Dead Alive, you'll never think of gore the same way again. As a result of that, you'll think there's hardly any of it in Bad Taste. So if your looking for another gore feast after seeing Dead Alive, this probably isn't the way to go.
