Before Sunrise (1995)
Absolutely tedious
It seems I am in the minority here but I found this movie over-calmingly tedious. It's starts well, the meeting on the train and the intriguing possibility of what may happen when two strangers meet by chance is alluring but once they start wandering around Vienna it's when it starts to get boring. The dialogue is just the kind of naive, wistful, cod-philosophical nonsense that young couples on their first date come up with to impress the other partner. Fine if you are trying to get laid but it makes for rather irritating viewing. After a while I was more interested in the scenery than what was going on with the main characters. By the end I just wished they'd shut up and get on the damn train! It's not that I don't have a romantic streak or appreciate dialogue based movies, there are many good examples of this type of film, it's just that I expect not to almost fall asleep during it.
Bubba Ho-Tep (2002)
Hugely disappointing.
I was really looking forward to this when it came out. The premise seemed crazy but a lot of fun. Elvis v the undead in a nursing home? Sounds great! Wrong. For a horror comedy (or comedy horror?) it was neither very funny or very scary. The idea is a good one but they forgot to put any good gags in. The plot was terrible and if it wasn't for Bruce Campbell I would've turned off halfway through. I kept with the film hoping that it would get better and there would be a great finale, but no the ending was weak. For such a great idea you think they could've come up with a better script? It was also very slow to start too which instilled a sense of boredom early on. Such a shame as I had high hopes for this one.
I turned off the TV very disappointed.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
Not great but not as bad as everyone says
I didn't go to see this when it was still on the big screen as the reviews were pretty unanimously bad. However on the small screen I decided to give it a chance and was actually quite surprised. OK it's not the world's best movie and there are better comic book adaptations but if you are looking for an entertaining piece of fluff then this movie is fine. It does look a bit hacked and looks like it's had a lot of editing and re-writes as the flow of the film is a bit uneven. Perhaps there were too many clashing ideas and heads in the making of the movie. However the effects aren't bad and the premise is good. It made me want to seek out the graphic novel which can't be a bad thing.
Overall I'd give it 6/10. If you are prepared to suspend your disbelief from a great height and just want a fun movie that takes you to another place for a couple of hours then I'd give this film a go. Not as awful as it's made out to be.
Hulk (2003)
Ang Lee Pulls it off.
This has really been dividing people and critics alike. Personally I think it's a great film. I guess that people expecting the usual summer blockbuster no-brainer might be disappointed, it might (shock horror) make them think a bit! There's been criticism that Ang Lee has tried to mix art-house sensibilities with the comic book blockbuster but as far as I can see it he pulls it off admirably. Ok, you don't get to see Hulk smashing things up straight away but when you think of the TV series you didn't in that either. The spilt screen comic book effects work perfectly and really look wonderful. The story is well told and the hulk himself looks great - when the action comes it's worth it! Overall I feel this film deserves to be up there with the other great comic book adaptations like Spiderman, Batman and X-men.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
creme brulee's all round!
If you don't like this film, you don't really like movies that much in my opinion. It's a wonderful, beautifully shot dream of a film. To the people who can't understand why it's ranked so highly here, well it's a great movie, thats all that needs to be said. The cafe in the film is real and located in the Montmartre area of Paris. I stumbled across it and it gave me good memories of a lovely film. (yes I had to have creme brulee, although I waited a lot longer than Amelie to get one!) You miserable sods who don't like the film deserve Scooby Doo the movie!
