Legaturi bolnavicioase (2006)
very shallow
This is a movie that relies solely on the somewhat controversial image of incest and lesbianism to get noticed. That is it.The dialogs are pathetic and the sensuality of the "sex scenes" is absolutely absent. The acting and the dialog are more suited for high-school children, yet the subject is intended for adult audiences. It is a gutless and shallow movie. It could have been way better if it had a story and more drama. Ah and on top of that, one more thing: why are inner monologues so excessively used? Makes it seem so cheap. All in all an embarrassing movie for Romanian cinema as well as for mature audiences attempting to view it.I know the means are scarce but, that is not always an excuse for a movie flopping as this one does. And please start using some good actors in your movies and stop recycling them from musicians (Tudor Chirila) - they can't act!
Moartea domnului Lazarescu (2005)
Very realistic but terrifyingly slow paced
I went to see this movie expecting quite a lot of it.After all it was awarded at the Cannes film festival. But i must say i was disappointed in the way this movie was made.I felt quite claustrophobic in the first 10-20 minutes of the film where nothing seemed to happen, and i do mean nothing, totally pointless. The camera movement actually made a lot of the spectators in the cinema feel literally sick.At first i thought it was the director's way of making us understand the condition the main character was in.But NO.It kept on being as shoddy and annoying through the whole film.Whatever the intent of the director was it totally felt annoying and cheap.A lot of times the image lost focus and i am sure it was not because of the projection equipment of the cinema i viewed it in.I do now being a Romanian movie it did not have a big budget and i am sure they struggled for every penny they invested in the making of it, but let's be serious, they could have found a more proper way of shooting it.At times i had the impression a was watching a movie that was shot from a cinema screen and then projected again to the audience. That's how badly it was filmed.
And then there was also the extreme length of it.I must say i have NEVER seen so many walk outs in a cinema in a long time. And that is in the country the movie was made in.
On the good side ,however, i have to say it is a totally realistic movie. It is very accurate in the portrayal of the Romanian medical system although it only covers some aspects of what is wrong with it.Nonetheless the idea is bold and the story is accurate in accordance to the realities of Romania. It does make a point only that it makes it painstakingly slow for the audience to watch it especially in the beginning.
Still on the good side of it is the acting of the cast and also the portrayal of the characters.None of them seem to be overacting in any way. That's how most Romanian doctors truly are.
All in all a film that fails short of being the much awarded movie i was expecting to see.A true nerve wrecking experience for the more unexperienced moviegoers.
