Midnight Movie (2008)
Good Retro Horror Fun
I caught a screener of Midnight Movie: the Killer Cut. I loved the retro horror style...really took me back to some old favorites. It had enough gore but not so much that it was pointless and it had some really fun characters, which is always a plus. Not to mention, with all these remakes and reboots, it was great to see a horror flick with a new original story line. The whole concept of a horror movie in the theater intertwining with the real world sounded weird to me at first and I wasn't sure how it would play out, but I actually enjoyed the way they handle in the movie and how they mesh the two worlds together. I really enjoyed the ending a lot, and I must say that's very important to me. If the ending falls short, I feel cheated, but I found myself pleasantly surprised in this case. Any old school horror fans out there would probably enjoy this movie, a good old fashioned setup of a group of people getting knocked off in a secluded location, but with some new interesting concepts.
Bride Flight (2008)
Finally saw it... and loved it
I have to admit the running time of the film was an initial turn off, but it was definitely worth every minute. I really enjoyed the structure of the film, going back and forth between present and past; it helped emphasize the lasting emotions that lingered from events that had taken place decades earlier. I also loved the way the characters' lives intertwined. I felt such a connection to the four main characters. The complexity of the roles they played in each others' lives tugged at me and took me on that emotional ride that you look for in a film. It was really cool to see such relatable characters dealing with so many tough decisions in such a realistic way. I would recommend this film 100%. Just make sure you set aside enough time to concentrate and enjoy the pace of the film. I, for one, will be setting aside some time to watch it again in the near future.
Viva Riva! (2010)
Fun watch
I wasn't sure what to expect out of Viva Riva, but I have to say I was very pleased. It was a fun action film, with some nice twists and turns. I must say I really enjoyed the main character, Riva... but then again, I tend to be a fan of protagonists that are also bad guys. I absolutely loved the fact that he keeps a light hearted attitude regardless how much danger he is in. The bad guys in this film got a little ruthless too, so if anybody out there hasn't seen a good torture scene that made you cringe in awhile, you might be surprised by a rather messy scene in this film. It definitely is not for everyone, but if you are a fan of dark, suspense films with a healthy dose of violence, you should definitely see this one. I must say, after watching quite a few foreign films recently, this one was a nice change of pace. Not to mention, it was shot very well, and I for one am somewhat of a sucker for thoughtful cinematography.
