Stupeur et tremblements (2003)
too literal transposition
Having the novel upon which this film is based, I can say that the film doesn't bring anything really new. Also, I didn't like S. Testut as the leading role. She was really dull. Look at the real Amélie (Nothomb): she is much more colorful than that.
The director use voice over too much. It seems like the film is just an illustration of the book. There is no imaginative narration.
Conclusion: why bother with the film ? Read the book! Note: 5/10.
Death to Smoochy (2002)
It should have been funny
It should have been funny. But it's not. I love dark comedies but this one just doesn't work.
Even if the casting is very good (Williams and Norton), it can't compensate for a bad script. Some scenes were out of place, even in a dark comedy, like the scene where Moochy is killed : it's too much violent to have its place in a comedy. It was filmed like it was a part of a gangster film.
3/10.
Testimony (1987)
One the best film about a composer
Ben Kingsley is a great actor. Here, he gives a performance worthy of an oscar. I almost believed he was Shostakovich himself.
The film is very good, especially the first part. The second part is a bit too focused on his relationship with Stalin. I think this was unessecary and a bit boring at times.
One of the best film about a composer along with Amadeus.
Touch of Evil (1958)
Great style, not much substance
(This review is about the director's cut version)
This film is a demonstration for Welles directing talent. The story seems secondary and not much better than any B-film story. There are many holes and improbabilities in the plot but the camerawork is great.
Acting is not that great either. Denis Weaver (motel night manager) is really unbearable, and the rest of the cast is just OK (including Welles and Heston).
Mancini's music is sometimes too bombastic and really disturbing. I'm glad they removed it from the first scene.
