Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Vastly different from the original, but ultimately better.
There are going to be a lot of people who dislike this miniseries intensely simply because there are so many differences between this version of the Battlestar Galactica concept and the concept for the original series. However, if this miniseries is taken by itself, I think it's well worth watching. Especially if you like sci-fi and the occasional good space battle. It's obvious that a lot of thought and detail went into this version, from the lack of networked computers on the Galactica to the silence of the space combat. The characters in the miniseries are also much more fully realized and human, incorporating flaws as well as virtues. The evil is more ambiguous, so much so that the viewer is left wondering which side is ultimately at fault for the war which takes place. The good is more flawed in this version as well, with Apollo being far from the saintly, perfect son of the first series. The character personalities which are closest to the ones in the original show seem to be those of Adama and Starbuck-- although even this has a wild curve to it, since the Starbuck of the miniseries is a woman(but still an excellent pilot and still Apollo's co-pilot). This version is also sexier than the original, particularly on the Cylon side. The line between what can be considered human and what cannot is further blurred in this way, raising questions about what the Cylons are truly capable of being and feeling. All in all, the miniseries is a much more intelligent take on the concept than the original series. The differences will probably be considered blasphemy by true BG fans, but if sci-fi lovers really give the miniseries a chance, I think they'll appreciate what this re-imagining has to offer.
Underworld (2003)
It creates a feeling of being one piece in a larger story
"Underworld" creates a feeling of being one piece in a larger story, as if there's a lot more in the past, and probably a lot more in the future, that has yet to be told. I liked all elements of the movie, from the story and casting to the special effects. I did feel that the werewolves were a bit short-changed on screen time, but not to an irritating degree. Someone compared this movie to "Blade"; aside from the fact that both movies feature vampires in black leather, there's not much similarity between the two. "Underworld" has much more backstory and an altogether stronger plot.
There's definitely a feeling that a lot more can be done with these characters in the future. Hopefully, "Underworld" will spawn a television series or a sequel.
Momentum (2003)
Kinda cheesy and predictable, but not bad for all that.
Kinda cheesy and predictable, but not bad for all that. I probably won't watch it again, but it still managed to be mildly entertaining. The movie also appears to be hoping to be used as a pilot episode for a new scifi series, which, as far as I know, isn't going to happen.
