Akoni (2021)
I loved it
I absolutely loved this film! Apart from the cinematography, sound and music score that was spot on, the story really resonated with me.
The film was not fast paced, but the still moments were filled with unspoken emotion and thoughts which, to me, didn't make it feel slow and filled the silence. When the lead actors didn't speak, I felt like I could hear their exact thoughts. Their emotion, or rather the emotion that the characters were trying to hide, and their body language told another layer of the story perfectly.
Simon Elrahi's performance was a great balance to the story and offered warmth.
The African scenery was superb too.
I also loved how abruptly the film ended, which to me meant that the filmmaker was saying that the problems addressed in the film is ongoing and no resolution has been found for it yet.
I think that perhaps people with less "lived experience" on the topic or compassion and understanding for the topic might not grasp it fully. But it certainly touched me and resonated with me. I left the cinema feeling overwhelmed with emotion and found myself looking at the trailer the follow day reliving the experience.
Purgatory Road (2017)
Suspense galore!
Wow, this film really had me on the edge of my seat. A typical horror film, but with slightly more story. It is exactly what you hope to get when you are looking for a good old scary night in. Great acting, great visually, very suspenseful!
Belushi's Toilet (2018)

7 Hills (2019)
Loved it
7 Hills was a very unexpectedly enjoyable doco. What I mean by that is that I never thought of kids from those communities doing things like skateboarding, I mean, why wouldn't they? But for some reason, it was never a mental image for me. This film opened my eyes to that reality in a very inspiring and entertaining way. It was beautifully shot, great storytelling and a great story. I can highly recommend this film!
All I Want (2017)
Very enjoyable
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film. It was relatable and the bits of craziness made for some good comic relief. The acting was good and the couples had good interaction and chemistry among them. I read some reviewers mention that aspects are unrealistic, but I was under the impression that it was intentional. Those aspects of the film made it funny to me and was a part of the comedy. I can really recommend this film.
Broken Ceiling (2018)
Great job!
Broken Ceiling is a great film, with a great story. It is very relatable and the acting of the lead actress is spot on. The thing that stood out most about the film was the level of suspense! The filmmakers did a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat. I think the message is also an important one:) I can highly recommend this film.
Risen: The Story of Chron 'Hell Razah' Smith (2020)
Fantastic
This film was absolutely fantastic. I enjoyed going on the journey of Hell Razah from start to finish, and seeing how he grows as a musician, and feeling his sorry when he gets sick. The story is sad and inspirational at the same time. It is relatable to any situation where perseverance is required. It was beautifully shot and beautifully told.
Closure (2018)
Loved it!
Close is a fabulous film, funny, but also touches on a lot of other emotions too. The mix of genres makes for an interesting and entertaining viewing experience. It is very well written with a strong story, great casing, and beautifully shot. There were a few very memorable and quirky moments in there that I absolutely loved, but I won't give anything away.
Got Pain? (2019)
So interesting!
This documentary is really informative. It gives a lot of information and a whole different perspective, which in turn will result in a whole bunch of new solutions. I love that other viewpoints and options are explored and that health is the focus point of this dodo. Really gave me something to think about.
The Mentor (2020)
Great film!
This was some great entertainment! The Mentor is a quirky, well-written film with so many moments for laughter, but at the same time, suspense. It was enjoyable and fun to watch and had me glued to the screen. Well shot and well acted! Bravo to the filmmakers!
The Generator (2017)
Fabulous viewing
One thing I love about sci-fi, and about this film I that anything is possible. It creates a world where you never know what is around the corner and what impossibility is going to become possible through some great idea/invention. The story is well told, interesting creative, and unique. Visually the film is also very appealing! I highly commend this film to any sci-fi enthusiast out there.
Scare Me (2020)
Very entertaining
This is a fun horror film to watch and should not be taken too seriously. I didn't mind the low budget at all, the story was well written and entertaining enough to carry the film. It was not too intense, but it was suspenseful ... if takes makes sense. I had a blast watching it!
The Colour of Darkness (2017)
Wonderful film
This is a fantastic film. It has a deep, beautiful and eye opening story. There are a lot of messages in this film but told in an entertaining way. The acting is great and the cinematography beautiful.
What Love Looks Like (2020)
Loved it!
I had a total blast watching this rom-com. It is well written, well-executed, great characters and so funny and quirky. It reminded me of when I was young, single, and was still trying to find "the one". The process of falling in love can be a real mess that either rewards....or not. But we all have to go through it. These 5 couples' stories gives you a few different situations. What makes it so entertaining and funny is that it is "funny because it is true". This film is very relatable and great fun to watch.
The Edict (2017)
Scary AF
Wow, this film really had me freak out a little. I found it really scary and it had me on the edge of my seat all the time. I thought the story was well told and the acting superb. I read some reviews about the sound... fair enough it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but whether it was deliberate or now, it added to my suspense and feeling of "growing crazy" - putting me in the mindset that I think the character was. I think this was a brilliant execution!
Silent Panic (2018)
Felt really real
This film really had me hooked. The way it was shot, and the way the story was told made me feel as if I was there and as if this was a fly-on-the-wall situation, opposed to watching a film. I don't know if that was deliberate, but it worked! It was also quite thought-provoking, and while watching, I often found myself wondering what I would do if I found someone in the trunk of my boot. And just like they experienced, there are many options but all come with its own set of challenges and possible bad outcomes. I thoroughly enjoyed this film!
Bigger Than the Game (2018)
Heartfelt and encouraging
Now, this was a really great film, to say the least. The characters were very well developed and so their individual backstories and paths. It is an encouraging, heartfelt story that deals with overcoming struggles, facing obstacles, and chasing dreams. It was beautifully shot and the acting was good too.
On the Corner of Ego and Desire (2019)
Brilliant!
This is an absolutely great doco. I think the way it was executed and the opportunism behind this project are just brilliant and so resourceful. It is entertaining, funny and gives a whole great insight into the world of filmmaking - and it is not easy! Great job Alex Ferrari.
The Back Pages (2017)
I want more!
This was a great anthology and I would love to see more. It is deep, thought-provoking, intriguing, and highly entertaining. Forget about the budget, the stories have enough substance to receive a high rating on its own merit. The only criticism that I have is that it is too sort and/or too few... because it was over too soon and I wanted to keep watching :)
Into the Void (2019)
Finally a zombie movie I love
I am not usually a zombie-fan, but this one seemed different. I was right:) This is a zombie movie but more real and less ridiculous than the over the top kind. Into The Void actually had a story, and a good one too! It is a beautiful love story and a reflection of love and the human existence. I cannot fault the story, the execution or the acting. Well done to the filmmakers.
The Stand Up Doll (2019)
Beautiful!
What, what a great story this young lady has. I found this documentary so interesting, hearing about her very colorful journey, life lessons, ups and downs. I feel like she definitely made the best of her 100 years on earth. She is a "character" to fall in love with, someone I would love to hang out with! The story was beautifully told, laid out and shot. I can highly recommend this doco.
The Unearthing (2015)
So much fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this fun indie horror film. It is really well put together, great cast, great story and shot very well. I was entertained throughout and I think the filmmakers did a super job!
Don't Call Me Bigfoot (2020)
Makes me wonder
Ok, so I am not someone who believes in big foot... or anything like that. But I thought it would be interesting to watch for pure entertainment purposes. Entertaining it was indeed! But the researchers are actual quite... well, knowledgeable? and make some great points. I won't say I am there yet, but I can say that maybe I am willing to listen more :) This doco makes you think and it makes you part of the sow. A great escape from reality and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Ab Negative (2019)
Amazing!
This was a pleasant surprise. AB Negative is set in the future, and to be honest, right at this moment, in the midst of Covid-19, it feels like it could be our immediate future. With so many medical , science and political factors at play in this film, I think it is a story told in a very realistic way. I was blown away by the cinematography and the shots that were chosen - very creative and really added to the production value. It looks great visually, the story is captivating and thrilling and the acting not bad either!
