Old People (2022)
Better than what people are saying
It's a good horror movie, considering the recent gore materials in the market. The concept is also good, tho the attack is nothing new. I love the idea of using old people and their anger towards the young for abandoning them. My only issue is probably how disconnected the plot from the opening to the conclusion. Anyway, I very much enjoyed it. Plus, it's disturbing enough to make you feel sick but not sick enough to turn off the movie.
So, If you're a fan of the genre, give it a look. It'll feel fresh , especially because of the movie's pacing. Unlike most horror films, nowadays, this one escalates quite fast.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin: Chapter Ten: Final Girls (2022)
An ending that concludes (but also opens in a good way)
All i'll say is this show is GREAT and it deserves a second season. A very rare finale where all loops / arcs are closed - but also opens a new one, in case they get renewed. And that open ending isn't so OPEN unlike most Netflix shows. It simply gives the entire cast a fighting chance at what to write about next season.
But, best part is, you'll sleep knowing it ended great. You'll long for a second season - but you won't hate the network for making you wait a couple months or a year to release it.
SPOILER ALERT
Plus that Ezra + Aria bomb is everything!!!! Really opens the world of guest stars from the original show. Hoping this one lasts long enough for us to see the original liars guest.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin: Chapter Nine: Dead and Buried (2022)
Everyone an ACT + Everyone's getting well-deserved screen timr
My issue mostly with shows that have more than 1 main character is they tend to struggle with who to "feature"
in an episode. After all, a star can't shine if all stars are shining at the time. BUT THIS show - no, this EPISODE - proved it CAN HAPPEN.
I won't dive deeper but this ep proves why they casted these 5 talented girls. They all has their emotional moment in this ep. So enjoy the ride.
Because this episode is hella riveting and heavy!! The secrets are finally out. Now, I'm craving to know more. How will things unfold!!!
Halloween Kills (2021)
Even Rob Zombie's version is smarter than this
I'm sorry but what was that. I was so excited cause the 2018 film was so well-made. It had almost 0 stupid character choices and the set-up felt so organic.
This sequel on the other hand, went the total opposite direction. Literally, all the sht happens cause of poor character decisions. It's sad that they used OG characters to hook us but gave them a lackluster arc.
The start is so good tho. Like the death scene of that couple was so chilling. The rest was meh.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin: Chapter Five: The Night He Came Home (2022)
I thought the previous episode was AWESOME. THIS IS EVEN BETTER
The Michael Myers + Black Christmas kinda masked killer is so good. I can't even begin to describe how happy I am they turned PLL into this more serious show. Anyway, to keep it short....
THAT DEATH SCENE... Wasn't the best, but it's probably the MOST SATISFYING EVER. It's a f* you to writers who wouldn't dare kill off some hated character early on. So this is so satisfying.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin: Chapter Four: The Fe(Male) Gaze (2022)
THAT CHASE SCENE!!!
The second batch of episodes are definitely there to give us reasons why these ladies are the main characters. Plus, YES I live for that chase scene, please!
The chase scene was well-choreographed and SMART. No stupid screams and random trip while running here, sir. So if any of the future chase scenes are like this, the it sure looks promising.
One thing I wish is they also bring that same energy to a killer death scene. That would be cool!
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021)
Has cool shots v.s Other PA films BUT 🙃
Few points
- I like that they finally gave us a PA film that uses hugh-quality cameras. Like, the audiencr wants to see every detail.
- HOWEVER, in doing so, it leaves that "imagination can be scary" factor which the original PA film had.
- It went with the original's pacing where it's sloooow sloow slow then boom boom boom. But since this is the nth film, the reveal felt too obvious. Then again, you don't watch PA film for the unique plot. You watch it to see a super scary hollywood version of demons
- PLEASE... The camera flashlight. We know they had to keep it on for the audience but it made the characters seem stupid. Imagine not wanting to be caught for sneaking in, and what do you do? Keep your camera flash on and hope the other people on the room pretends they don't see you.
LASTLY, this one feels disconnected with the other PA films. Not a hint of connection, other than being a found footage film - but more professionally taken. So I hope they connected it even the slightest like say, the demon be the same demon. Cause it honestly made me feel like they're just profiting off the title. Promising us PA but delivering something else.
The acting's also okay. The camera quality really hides the actors' performance, which can be a good or bad thing for them. But PA was never about the acting, so it's okay.
Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (2022)
Suprised that it's actually good
I'll keep it short and say... It's NOT the ABC / Freeform version of PLL. Which is actually a good thing. I super loved the original (but hated the endi ng seasons) because of how diverse the main girls were. And that is also in this show!!
PLUS, it has a more serious tone to it. I'm not sure yet at how SERIOUS they are with their horror tone but it's definitely smart. Unlike the original where it tried to look smart but had so many loopholes (which i only realized after rewatching it at an older age).
Additionally, I'm happy this series isn't trying to fully remake the plot. It's PLL but different. Give it a shot, guys. And watch at least 2 episodes before you give it your verdict of if you should continue or not.
Resident Evil (2022)
It's okay - people are just overreacting
I'll keep it short:
1. Acting's okay.
2. Script is okay but is trying too hard to make it fresh / contemporary / up-to-date that it feels cringy at times.
3. Should've been titled something other than RESIDENT EVIL. This show is nowhere near being religious to its source material. Maybe the writers were inspired by some, and then used a couple of references- but i genuinely feel like people would've liked the show if yhey didn't use the title. Or maybe like include in the title that it's a different time in the resident evil universe like "Resident Evil: The Second City" or whatever.
4. It had pretty cool action scenes. There's this one scene in the prison setting where the Umbrella guy started moving like an action star, and i think it's pretty awesome!!!!
5. The thing that ruins it for me (main reason why I didn't gave it a 5) is the idea that writers always use stupid character decisions to make big problems. It becomes the center piece to why the entite tragedy happens. In this series, it's the bratty kids. I know they're young but HEELLLOOOO. I wish the writers could've thought about a different angle / way.
Bonus Takeaways
1. An extremely rich and highly maintained facility can't have easy-to-hack system. It's like High schoolers hacking Google?? Whut?
2. The protagonist, Jade, is so hard to root for cause she's running on LUCK. The only reason she's still alive is cause the writers want her to be alive.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Potentially great reunion but forgot about why we love Jurassic
I'll keep it short. Here are my main reasons why this installment didn't quite work:
1. Too much dialogue - Jurassic Park thrilogy was all about being new, fresh, and exploration. World trilogo was about reliving that experience, and even extending it. This one gave us a glimpse of that - but wanted to create too much overlapping stories. At times, I felt like shouting to the screen, "we get it. Let's cut to the next scene already"
2. Overacting - the main man of the original series returned with some of the OG cast - but his lines felt too forced and cheesy. The long stares, the macho moves and dramatic pauses before saying the lines made it feel awkward and too staged.
3. Dinosaurs had lower importance - It felt like for a movie about dinosaurs, they certainly made their importance in this installment less significant.
Now, I do want to point out that overall, the movie's still enjoyable. I think seeing both the cute and the scary dinos still never gets old!!! But story-wise, it was a let-down.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
Great gore but predictable storyline & average acting
What worked:
- Kills were as good as any Saw film
- Or actually the gore might be tastier in this installment
- I like the corrupt policemen storyline
What didn't work:
- Chris Rock... I love him so much but not the best option for the film's protagonist. He sort of goes off character sometimes that it makes the entire scene disconnected.
- Plot's predictable. I knew the bad guy's the bad guy by the 2nd or 3rd corpse.
- Other characters didn't have enough layers
- Main character's daddy issues, to me, didn't matter. It didn't make him more relatable, or for me to understand him more.
So yah, it s an okay film. But the gote makes it worth it 💖
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
A treat for ALL Wanda / Scarlett Fans
OKAY OKAY OKAY... First of all if you're expecting the movie version of Wanda to be AS EXTREME as in the comics, then you'll for sure be disappointed. HOWEVER, if you're a fan of the movie version's slowly growing Wanda THEN you'll love this one.
I won't spoil anything but leave 3 points why i love the film and 1 reason why i couldn't give it a 10.
WHY IT'S GOOD
1. It explores a new genre for Marvel without leaving what's already been effective too far. It has that horror feels to it but it's def still Marvel. It's filled with humor and ACTION.
2. The movie is OVERLOADED with FIGHTS! One thing I hate about superhero movies is when they focus on developing the story so much that they forgot people watch these films cause of the fight/magic scenes. This movie DELIVERED. First few minutes in and cool stuff's already happening. No dull moments.
3. They gave every character a TIME TO SHINE. It's so annoying when a movie ends up only focusing on one hero - think X-Men with Wolverine. THIS IS NOT THAT. The film gave everyone, even the fresh-faces enough time to be loved. *****I forkin loved the Illuminati part + Rachel McAdams is a badass.
Now, all that said, one major thing I hated is how I didn't feel like it's a Sam Raimi film. He usually has such a unique attack on the horror genre. But maybe it's cause this was never meant to be a full on scary movie... But still, to me sone scares felt flat. Too flat that i laughed - and wasn't sure if I should be laughing.
All in all- GO WATCH IT. It's an IMPORTANT movie in the Marvel universe. I swear 👌🏻👌🏻
Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021)
Surprisingly better than the FIRST MOVIE
Okay, this night be an unpopular opinion, but I'll say it anyway... I found this better than the first one! But mostly because you're already hooked with the main characters, and they make you want to know more about the other characters too.
They'll make you fall in love with the cast - without actually telling much. Idk if it was intentional but they only revealed enough about each character, thus, making you root for then cause you want to know more! That said, the minus 1 point for me ALSO goes to the idea that they didn't allow us to get to know the interesting characters more. Our idea of them is ... too shallow.
But other than that, the entire thing's very INTERESTING AND FUN. What makes this better than Saw is it's not GORY. I love GORE but sometimes you want to watch something intense without having the urge to shut your eye or throw up. This is that! Intense, skin-crawling but never too gory. The puzzles were SIMPLER - maybe cause I already know the formula from the original film - yet still effective. I also love the twist!!! Makes a lot of sense to me.
Don't Breathe 2 (2021)
Leave after the 2nd half
The first half was extremely cool and had the same edge-of-seat effect as the first time. But the second half tried to outsmart itself abd became a telenovela of some sort. Believe me, I love me some good twist, but it felt unecessary for this one.
The Batman (2022)
A Top TIER Batman Movie
I'll keeo it short and simple. This Batman movie, by far, is one of the best from the franchise. The chemistry of Batman & Catwoman is so good. The actors in the film are all so perfect. I forgot who they were outside the film. The setting, art direction, ans set designs are so detailed. THE SHOTS per scene are so INTENTIONAL and experimental. It's nothing like a normal superher movie.
The direction gave Batman a fresh perspective. I genuinely thought I was going to hate it, based on the trailers, but nope. I couldn't have been more wrong.
Now if it's "perfect" why not give it a 10?
2 THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE
- The end credit (i won't spoil much. But def not worth waiting through the credits
- THE LENGTH. Since the movie's dark and serious, it sometimes pushes the line between disinteresting and intense. As someone who hasn't sat down in the cinema for a long time, my attention span was deeply challenged.
Jigeum uri hakgyoneun (2022)
Great but leaves you annoyed at times
I'll keep it short, the film is action-packed and thrilling - minus the first episode. So you really have to live through the pilot where the writers basically wanted the viewers to get a sense of the show's mood. Honestly, it felt a little unnecessary... Nevertheless, the succeeding episodes were heart-pumping. I didn't want to stop watching at 3 am.
Anyway, the problem is not if it lives up to Train to Busan, because of course it won't. Different setting, tone and character focus. But the issue is how the writers only make characters likeable the moment they're about to cut them off.
Believe me, I love an emotional character death but to kill of the interesting ones that the audience root for at such an early stage is just annoying. At least semi-develop the other nobodies before killing the charming ones. Other than that, the show's pretty good.
I have to comment the casting too. I don't know Korea's standards but WOW everyone's so good. Even the random child saved by the police had great acting skills. So yeah, that made the experience more terrifying.
Hoping for season 2. 💪🏻 Give me someone to root for from episode 1 to... at least episode 5-6.
Death to 2021 (2021)
Same but less eventful
I'm not sure if it's because 2020 had a far worse tale to share or this film felt too repetitive? They used the same formula but had fewer laughs. Not to say it's uninspired or disinteresting - it's definitely a fun mockumentary to watch. I was just hoping for more?
My issue is for a movie that mentions diversity a lot, there doesn't seem to be much in the movie in terms of country. They made it feel like all the events revolves around how U. S. and U. K. and it's people see the world. It would be interesting to add perspectives from other citizens of the world.
- Here's to hoping we don't get another sequel for 2022 cause that would mean, the world went through another hell ride.
The Perfect Man (2005)
Predictable - but what do u expect?
I won't even dive deep in the plot cause it's too predictable. There's no way you'll "enjoy" the film for its plot, that's for sure. The characters are also too... underdeveloped - and that's trying to sound kind. The thing is this is the kind of film you watch either because you're
1) A Hilary Duff fan - which I am
2) Loves cheesy rom-com films that don't extremely make i laugh as hard but hard enough to make uyou sit through the entire thing
3) Chilling at home and wants to cut time
So there! Don't watch it expecting this grand film. Watch it and just sit back. Remember the Hilary good old days.
Gossip Girl: Final Cancellation (2021)
Another Blast from Past for Serious GG followers
This episode gives us hope that the original cast can somehow appear in the show. Blair's mom in this episode confirms she's in rhe same universe! That Blair is just in Paris. Let's go!
In terms of story, GG (2021) keeps getting better and this ep is nothing less. The drama keeps building, and we're for it. My only issue is the characters aren't developing forward. They keep movi ng forward and then 2 steps back, which is at some point logical but also annoying on other levels.
Gossip Girl: Posts on a Scandal (2021)
GG is in a roll - and the characters are getting better too
First of all, I'm so happy LUNA is back in this episode - cause she's my favorite so far - but other than that the storyline per character is getting better. I was starting to hate Zoya's character growth but in this episode you'll see more of her values. Plus, every character plot is there to keep other smaller plots even more interesting. Sort of liek a breather from the heavy dramas.
The thripple story is also getting more interesting!! So overall, Gossip Girl (2021) is improving more and more. Started on a bad note but they're definitely proving that they can get better.
- P. S. The -1 point is still with the teacher plot. I'm still a bit afloat with that storyline. I'm not sure if it takes away the secrecy element or if it adds what's at stake.
Gossip Girl: Once Upon a Time in the Upper West (2021)
Everything is enoyable anout this ep except for one character
This episode is even better than their mid-season finale, which was (in my opinion), hard to top considering the starting episodes weren't as good. The entire MESS is so messy and intertwined that it's so entertaining. I missed the original series but this def made me realize this GG has its own ground to stand.
Okay, won't spoil anything anymore but ZOYA, in this episode, is annoying. Her character keeps moving 1 step forward, and then 2 backwards. Like, you think she'll do one thing - but the writers keep controlling her. Her decisions don't make sense. Like they want her to be likable BUT alao so annoying? She wants to change but she can't. If that's the intent, then it's effective but it's bizarre to me.
And then another missing one is that the 2 SIDEKICKS are missing in action. I truly think Zoya's minions may have small roles to play but are so essential in making an episode more entertaining!!
W lesie dzis nie zasnie nikt II (2021)
The FIRST one is at least FUN....
The first one isn't extremely good but it had fun moments. It at least started scary and funny. This one, on the other hand, wants to be so many... TOO MANY things in one. It wants to be a nerd flick, a GORROR - like a teen version of HATCHET - a coming of age film, a love story, a comedy, a sci-fi, etc.
If you've seen the first one, you know that plot-wise, it'll be nowhere near reality so "being scary cause it might happen to u too" is not an option. Now, that wasn't my problem with the film.
THE problem is... it fails to be anything, really. The jokes weren't landing, the gore was too CGI-y, the characters were too stupid. So at the end of the film, you won't really know what to root for.
Good thing I saw it on Halloween day. I at least had a reason to waste time on a random horror film.
There's Someone Inside Your House (2021)
Good start & high school slasher
To keep it short, the movie ISN'T BAD.
It had a great beginning. The story, including the killer and his methods, was well-established. Might I add that the gore-level is in a justiafably satisying level where you don't feel SICK watching it, yet weirded out that you're enjoying the blood. So it's not HOSTEL gore but definitely not PROM NIGHT (2008) high-school-simple stab kinda gore.
Well-developed CHARACTERS. The unique part about this movie is that for a Netflix film, the characters are pretty good. Some victims made last minute bad decisions but not entirely stupid. Unlike with your typical teen slashers, the characters' decisions are pretty understandable given the situation + their youth.
The TWIST is OKAY.
As someone who's seen almost every plot twist in the horror genre book, I think this one had a decent reveal. *I WON'T SPOIL WHO IT IS SO U CAN KEEP READING* Did I guess, correctly? YES. Did I know from the start? Sort of. I had 2-3 options. Anyway, the cool part is the movie doesn't aim to be UNIQUE with its killer or reveal. They simply wanted it to be logical (minus the actual possibility of getting away with the kills in the first place)
OKAY - So what's not to enjoy in the film?
The PACING. It starts off REALLY amazing. I love a horror movie that gives you multiple bodycount in the first 30-40 minutes. And that, it did. But as the film tries to uncover more about the "FINAL GIRL", the story becomes less interesting. I'm not sure if it's just me. But a big part of me ****SEMI-SPOILER COMING AHEAD**** wanted the herione to die. I felt like the way she moved she knew she was going to make it.
And then, the latter and climax part also lacked the heat *if you've seen it, you'll get the pun*. It was just... Okay. I wanted to see running and screaming!! But what were we given? A jaxtaposition of the main girl's backstory.
I feel like it's good but could've been better if they kept that pacing from start to end. My heart was raising and I was cheering "KILL KILL KILL" or "RUN RUN RUN" at the start. And then I found myself going through my phone at the end.
FINAL NOTE:
Watch it if you want to see an enjoyable slasher but don't expect it to offer anything unforgettable.
In Time (2011)
Great Concept that could've gone places
I'll keep it short. The concept is VERY GOOD and unique. Maybe the director or writer heard "time is precious" so much that he came up with this amazing concept.
The issue is... where they take the concept. The unfolding of worlds is nice. You get to see the "reality" of this world. However, the angle has been covered in so many other movies that it takes its uniqeness nowhere.
So it took the TIME CONCEPT to BONNIE & CLYDE, to VICTIM FALLS FORand the idea of the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer. And what do we have? A rehash of every other action sci-fi film. The pacing was good but as i get to the climax, it's like "okaaaayyy. So this is where we're heading?"
But yah, as a whole, it's a pretty enjoyable!! Something to watch with the family during a Saturday.
Pretty Smart (2021)
Tries to be funny by bating viewers with HOT actors
It's not BAD... But it's also not EXCELLENT. The first episode was really bad tho. I'm glad I stuck around to check out the rest.
Okay, initial thoughts:
1. Sort of funny and cringy at the same time
- I'm not sure if it's the over-the-top acting (sometimes it works, but not always), or the script? There's just something about how the lines are delivered that makes it annoying. You know how when an actor over-emphasizes lines to make it obb it that it's a joke.
2. Lacking in laugh - but tons of eye-candy I think everyone's pretty in this show! Everyone's so hot but the laughs are missing. Emily's sister also sort of annoys me. It seems like a one-rhythm kinda character.
3. I sort of tries to be Friends - or at least replicate the elements
- we have a newly broken-hearted girl who enters a place where a solid group lives. We have a hot actor (sort of airhead but not really), very positive girl, a hippie girl who has anger problems, and a gay dude (probably a what if to Chandler's character). So anyway, there's just that parallelism but less chemistry??
4. It GETS BETTER
- Believe it or not, it actually gets better as you go forward. The characters get better and less annoying. So if you have the patience, watch and see how they unfold.
